The ultimate goal of homicide mystery movies is to unveil the murderer. "Goldford Manor" is not carefully watched, and it is also the case.

If you look closely, you will find that the real suspense of the movie "Goldsford Manor" is not who killed the "man", but who "wanted to kill but did not kill" him. When hunting, who shot the bullet that grazed the man's ear but failed to kill him?
At the end of the film, we will follow the camera to find out who inserted him with a knife and who poisoned him before the knife was inserted. We know his killer, but who was the murderer who attempted to murder him?

Anyway, I didn't sort out the characters and the basic plot until the third time, and if it was specific to more subtle details, I was afraid that I would be "ashamed to say".
Each character in "Goldford Manor" has a specific "role"

The time and place set the background tone of the film. The ornate, exquisite aristocratic manors of the 1930s were filled with elegance, glitz, extravagance, interlacing and contrasting stereotypes, darkness and debauchery and lust...
Time and place are the vessels that feed stories and humanity. It is like a bottle of wine, the specific degree is still up to the "wine" itself! Honestly, I personally have a sincere preference for this type of "bottle"!
Of course, this bottle is not simply used to hold wine, its label in turn also affects the characteristics and quality that wine must have.

To sort out the characters clearly, this is a big project.

First of all: the characters are divided into two categories, one belongs to the "upstairs" category and the other belongs to the "downstairs". Simply put, "upstairs" is the upper echelons of society with status (there are also guests who are not aristocratic); "downstairs" is the low-status social bottom of the waiter (including actors pretending to be servants and servants with a "free spirit").

Secondly: the upstairs are divided into masters and guests; the downstairs are divided into masters and guest servants. The servants of the guests are relatively simple (basically one-to-one), and the servants in the master's home have different levels of specific classification according to the functions of their duties, which is more complicated.
There are more than 30 characters in the whole play, and each character has a real role in promoting and analyzing the storyline. So, no character is fictional, and you have to figure out the ins and outs of each person to better understand the story.
Below, I will take the three masters of Goldford Manor as the core to sort out the characters of the whole play.
A total of 14 people "upstairs":
(1) 3 owners of Gosford Manor.
The old man (the victim) and one of the sisters of the lady had an adulterous affair

1. Two people on the man's side. One is his cousin, who is a Hollywood star; one is a friend of his cousin, a Hollywood filmmaker.
2. There are five people on the hostess's side. Two younger sisters, two brothers-in-law and an aunt.

The total number of "downstairs" is about 20:
(1) There are a number of servants inside the manor (there are indeed some characters in it that are background boards, so it is not very good to subdivide), and 10 people who have the role of story promotion. Let's pick the right story
Miss's personal maid (has an indescribable relationship with the old man)
Butler, housekeeper, kitchen lady, master's personal maid, lady's maid, missus's maid, in addition to a soul chicken soup maid, a handsome male servant, shoe shine master male servant, kitchen lady manager, stealing fat kitchen lady and other background board male and female servants and kitchen maids.
(2) The total number of servants brought by the guests is 6 (one of which is disguised as an actor).

The hostess's five guests each had a servant, of which the eldest brother-in-law's personal maid and the aunt's personal maid were the "knife cutter" and "guide the solver" mentioned above, respectively.
The male servant brought by the producer friend of the man's cousin is a Hollywood actor who is unspoken by the producer and experiences life.

It's a group acting, and if you only stare at a few core characters (such as the character who guides the case, your aunt's maid), it will definitely affect your full and deep understanding of the film.

The large number of characters is not the most attention-consuming part of this movie, as we combed above, they can always follow a certain logic to comb through.
What really tests the audience is the trivial and complicated details (such as the poison bottle that poisoned the old man in the process of advancing the story appears seemingly randomly in the camera).
The whole plot adopts the method of multi-clue, multi-angle, and hybrid network narrative. It's like a jigsaw puzzle, each piece is useful, but it is broken up, and you need to effectively stitch it in your mind during the viewing process to restore the truth.
In order to save everyone some effort, after watching it three times, I relied on clumsy skills to put together a story synopsis (mainly for the murder case itself, which does not reflect the clever narrative methods of the play at all):

When the old man was young, he opened a factory and played with many girls in the factory, one of whom was the current housekeeper. The housekeeper gave birth to a son when she was young, and the old man lied to her that she would find someone to adopt, but instead sent the child to an orphanage.
When the child grew up, he understood the evil done by the old man, so he deliberately became a personal male servant of one of the sister-in-law's brother-in-law, waiting for the opportunity to take revenge on this cold-blooded and ruthless "father". The housekeeper, who was good at observing the color, saw the motives of the male servant and learned through an old photograph that the child was his own flesh and blood, and in order to protect him, he chose to poison the old man first, making the child's murder untenable.
After the old man died, the police came. The noisy detective brought a clever assistant and deduced from the scene that what really killed the old man was not the knife inserted in the chest, but the poison before the knife was inserted.
The aunt's "rookie" personal maid is the real "detective" in this film, she relies on the fragments she hears and looks at to deduce that it is the man who stabbed the manservant; and finally through the dialogue between the lady and her aunt, she understands that the housekeeper is the maid's biological mother and the real murderer. Before leaving the manor, she went to the housekeeper to implement the situation, and the housekeeper admitted everything very happily.
The calm whiteness of the case is in the moment of the audience
Of course, the police don't know all of these causes and consequences, and they don't know who the killer is.
Like the ladies, the ladies, and the relatives, the police don't seem to care who killed the old man...
The story begins in the rain, and after a murder, the story ends in the sunshine!

So, this movie uses so many characters, painstakingly interspersed with so many details, just to tell us a story of revenge and hatred?
At the end of the story, the film uses the mean mouth of the lady aunt to tell the implicit truth that "it is rare for anyone to grieve for his death".
No one was sad about his death, and no one was thinking about who the murderer was!
On the contrary, the death of the "victim" has relieved many people. Those who want revenge, those who want to be free, those who want money rejoice and get what they deserve!
To be precise, the "victim" is murdered three times in the movie. The last two converge in this fait accompli murder, and the mystery is solved at the end. But what about the one that attempted? Who was the man who tried to shoot him during the hunt?

"Goldsford Manor" is indeed a detective movie on the surface, and it is a superb brain-burning detective movie with a unique narrative approach. However, it is precisely because of the brain-burning and superb that it is necessary to look carefully, repeat it, and look carefully. As soon as this is done, more profound problems will inevitably be seen.
The unexplored "attempted murder" is the deeper point of view of this movie. It is the "trump card" under this dazzling deck!
In the movie, the "murder case" is real, while the "attempted murder" is a fiction. After careful consideration, this "attempted murder" is really not simple, it can be described as "virtual and real"!
The movie doesn't tell us who fired the bullet that didn't kill the old man.
Several people in the room may be; those who are not present may also be behind-the-scenes planners; or they may be enemies who do not appear in the movie story (expanding to his personality, character, and money can hurt everyone).
Since an illegitimate son hates him and wants to murder him, why can't other bastards have the same idea? Through the dialogue of the characters, the movie tells us that when the old man opened the factory, he had done a lot of small female workers, and when he gave birth, he had to send them away.
In the final analysis, the bullet that was going to assassinate him came from the evil he had done, from the hatred for him.
There is a debt and a master, and all his results are nothing more than the inevitable "echoes" of the causes that have been sown.
From this point of view, although the shot of the attempted murder is "unsolved", it is not a suspicious array, and it can be regarded as "hanging without mystery"!
The Tang Dynasty monk Master Xuanzang said this in the "Theory of Enlightenment": "What is hatred in the clouds, from anger to the first, resentment into sex, can hinder not hate, hot annoyance as karma, that is, those who knot hatred cannot bear it, and they are constantly annoyed." ”
