This time, the animated version of the myth created by Netflix is not focused on the gap market NicheMarket, nor does it refuse to be classified, but by creating a rainbow spectrum of narrative, the preferences of each audience are included.

Dialogue with the "Love, Death, Robots" production team: a fantasy show tailored for everyone

Movies are a hundred years old, and generations of filmmakers have put exciting stories on the screen again and again, until one day, some people say that the story has been told and the era of cinema is coming to an end. However, recently, Neflix's latest original drama "LoveDeath + Robot" "Love Death and Robots" immediately exploded in the film and television circle. The 18 short films are like 18 master film lessons, each small story uses a different video style, exploring the curiosity and desire for the future world, admiration and fear.

These 18 sci-fi shorts are very elaborate and do not stick to the form or duration. The small ones are only 7 minutes long, and the long ones are less than 20 minutes. The boldest is that each episode uses different animation techniques to collide sci-fi with different narrative genres. There are wars, action, thrillers, the fantasy of China's "Fox Legend", the "Lola Run"," the "Gravity-style" space drama, the "Woody Allen-style" humor sketches, the Disney version of fairy tales... Encountering 18 different animation techniques is simply dizzying.

In last year's roundtable pie about "what is a movie", Jiang Wen's sentence that the film must say "non-points" hit a lot of people.

"This right and wrong thing is a situation in which desires exceed the satisfaction or acceptance of real society, and these non-divisions need to be moralized, rationalized, and visualized through art."

The show's executive producer, tim Miller, who has a resume as an animator and director who previously directed Deadpool, said: "It's personally tailored for everyone, which means it covers all kinds of narrative genres: sci-fi, fantasy, horror, action. I think because I personally prefer science fiction, I may have chosen a few more science fiction genre stories, but we try to balance them as much as possible. ”

Led by Tim Miller's animation studio BluRsudio, the entire production was done by 13 animation studios and 9 animators from different countries. The stories were picked by Miller himself: 16 ready-made short stories and 2 original stories for the series. Each studio has its own industrial-grade expertise to create a very different audiovisual language presentation.

18 short films with completely different visual design, animation technology, and story types make up this Netflix's most popular animation traffic series at present

The current popular 3D computer-generated animation ensures that the vast majority of episodes use this technology. Specifically, it is photorealistic CG animation, and the most skillful use of this technology in this series is Sony Image Processing Studios and its war-themed short film Lucky 13.

VFX Supervisor Chris Waegner said: "At the beginning of the project, we presuppose a more stylized visual scheme, but soon realized that a project like this had to be photorealistic. This project gives each member of the team great freedom to explore the uniqueness of the animation medium, especially from previous animation works. We wanted to create the most photogenic level of real CG animated characters, establishing the animation style while making it look like it was shot on film. ”

Not every studio chooses a 3D or realist style. Passion studio PassonStudio, the production team for the series Zima Blue, chose a very different path: a 2DTVPaint art style in the Alastair Reynolds philosophical sci-fi style (for example, "Song of the Sea" was produced on this technology). Director Robert Valley said: "When I saw other teams handing over their creative styles one after another, I felt like I was going to try to go the other way. We chose to use a more refreshing painting style in the background, and we rarely used computer processing, and everyone on the team followed this rule to do their best to promote the traditional craft of TVPaint, and I was very happy to see that the final product achieved this goal. ”

Some animation styles end up not meeting the audience because they don't meet quality standards. Stop-Motion Animation, for example, is one of them, and although Tim Miller wanted to be able to use the technology, he died halfway through.

Somewhat similar to the stop-motion style was applied to the series Witness. This unique style of painting by Spanish artist Alberto Mielgo has aroused great response and heated discussion on the Internet. Many people have ventured to speculate that the production team used "motion capture technology" Mocap, but in fact it did not. "It's real hand-painting, called keyframing," says Creator Alberto, "We're basically doing what Disney did in the earliest days of Snow White and 101 Spotted Dogs, it's an extremely hard job, simply to get the characters moving in a hand-drawn way. ”

The drama "Witness" has a Wong Kar Wai-style color image style

What makes the audience feel the most difficult to distinguish between true and false is the very natural swing of the characters' clothes. In order to create this natural effect, the team used a new technology on the fabric that has not been widely practiced on the market. "The characters are naked when they are animated, and then they are dressed on top," he adds: "We used a piece of software called Marvellous Designer, which was originally just a fashion design software, originally to help fashion designers complete the clothes they wanted, and its simulated clothing technology was exactly what I wanted, but because this software project did not complete the final internal interaction, it was not widely used by the outside world." However, I was obsessed with its interface and features, so I pushed everyone on my team to start using the software and perfected the internal interaction programs that I didn't have, so that the outside world would wonder why the character costumes moved so naturally. ”

"Love Death Robot" explores not only the most advanced animation technology, but also applies these technologies to the corresponding narrative, resulting in unlimited reverie and realistic depictions of the future robot era. When people sighed that the story had been told, David Finch and Tim Miller took these 18 short and sharp bullets and shot them at the filmmakers who lacked imagination, and let us know that the story can never be told.

Every era has its own imagination and desire for the future, because people can never be satisfied with the current life, and always need to find a gap to escape this too real, cruel, stereotyped reality. These "non-divided thoughts" for the future are the real meaning of the existence of the film.
