Master architect Wang Shu: "For me, Hangzhou can also represent China"

author:Qing Xiaozhu

"For me, Shanghai is not China, and Hangzhou can also represent China. When I go back to Hangzhou, I go back to China. ”

Born in Xinjiang, Mr. Wang Shu grew up in Beijing and studied in Nanjing, but he took root in Hangzhou. He believed that Hangzhou was a beautiful chinese urban sample, so he "lived in seclusion" in Hangzhou, working with the craftsmen, tile after tile, brick after brick, day after day, year after year.

For more than 20 years, the literati's feelings are the same, the scenery has changed several times, and Mr. Wang Shu has left several of his native China in Hangzhou. The author grew up in Hangzhou, and deeply feels that Mr. Wang Shu's works are the most Hangzhou, and also the most literati. Here are five works by Mr. Wang Shu.

1.Indoors

Master architect Wang Shu: "For me, Hangzhou can also represent China"

This is mr. Wang Shu's work in 1997, completed by the "amateur architecture studio" founded by him and his wife Mr. Lu Wenyu.

Although it is an interior design, it also reflects his consistent architectural point of view, that is, first based on tradition, and then facing the future. The corners and corners of the room, even in 2021, are full of modernity. But the main material used is traditional wood. They were built into the wooden doors and windows of the future, just like the ancient civilizations that naturally became like this after the action of time.

The advantages of using wood, in addition to the macroscopic, the tradition is preserved, but also the use of its ability to concentrate and ferment warmly. The sun and the light shone on the wood, which told us that she would pass it on to the owner of the house.

2. China Academy of Fine Arts

"There was a classmate who took the exam on the 4th floor, went out to the toilet in the middle of the way, somehow went to the 1st floor, and then found it again, it was 40 minutes later."

Master architect Wang Shu: "For me, Hangzhou can also represent China"

The Academy of Fine Arts is probably the greatest intersection with Mr. Wang Shu's architectural career. In 2000, he came to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts, and in 2004 and 2007, he designed the first and second phases of the Xiangshan Campus, respectively, and then came to work on the campus he designed by himself. He said that with a wave of his hand, a demolition and a construction can change the environment in which people live, and such a thing should have been done by God. He engaged in god's work and became his own god, and the Academy of Fine Arts and him were destined for each other.

"I designed her to get lost," he said to himself, "because it was in that process of getting lost that we could get a good feel for her." ”

Mr. Wang Shu believes that the building is not only a house, but also integrated with the entire environment, with light, water, wind and ups and downs. Buildings eventually become part of the environment, and sometimes the environment may be flawed and need to be remedied by the building.

This point of view is fully reflected in the Xiangshan Campus of the Academy of Fine Arts. Her indoor and outdoor boundaries are not so clear, she is not only a building, but also a place, like a garden. In line with what he believes, the ancient artificial garden represents a completely different kind of architecture besides the architecture we know.

From an artistic point of view, she adheres to Mr. Wang Shu's consistent obsession with landscape painting, and runs through his thinking on exploring the future in traditional elements.

In addition to the use value that this art brings to people's pleasure and satisfaction, she is really taking on the value scale required by an art school located in Hangzhou to teach and educate people. There is a miracle effect of one side of the water and soil to nourish the other side of the people.

3. Southern Song Dynasty Royal Street Exhibition Hall

This is a 2009 work, as an exhibition hall, she does not have the majesty that an ordinary exhibition hall usually has, but is a bit like a naughty and cute summer pavilion on the street. The entrance and exit options on the street are set up in the open space in front of the door, which adds a little more to her appeal.

Repairing a museum full of tradition, Mr. Wang Shu hid her traditional side in a modern sense, but it was not hidden tightly, revealing a hint of signal that it was not so simple here.

4. Waterfront Mountain Residence

Built in 2013 on the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art, The Waterfront Mountain Residence is a huge but not easy to spot. The inspiration for her creation came from a trip to Dongting Creek by Mr. Wang Shu, the streets and alleys of the village, all connected by rooftops, Mr. Wang Shu sighed, "In this world, there are such wonderful things happening about hiding this thing. ”

"Hidden", what attracted Mr. Wang Shu is that Chinese landscape painting has a large number of themes describing how to live in seclusion in the mountains, and hiding a large building in broad daylight has become his new attempt.

Beneath the 1 million rolling green tiles, a huge building is hidden. The green tiles are dark in color and do not reflect the sun, and the paved stairs on the roof provide a good cover for the building below. Standing on the ground looking down at her, the penetrating space allows us to see the tree from one end to the other. Using visual confusion, he cast a stealth boundary for the waterfront mountain residence.

Surrounded by earthen walls that will not fail for a thousand years, performing her duties as a place to stay for her. She is a magical and enchanting incense that helps people to sleep peacefully.

5. Lin'an Museum

Completed in 2019, the Lin'an Museum integrates the bricks, tiles, rammed earth and other characteristics of Lin'an's local soil.

Master architect Wang Shu: "For me, Hangzhou can also represent China"

The floor plan is somewhat similar to the Xiangshan Campus of the Academy of Fine Arts, but it is more local, less of the rebellious spirit of the art school, and more of the low-key and calm of the historical and cultural museum. The Academy of Fine Arts is like a teenager dressed in fresh clothes and angry horses in the countryside, and the Lin'an Museum is more like an old man who has witnessed the transformation of history.

From 1997 to 2019, in the past 22 years, Mr. Wang Shu's architectural views have not taken a turn, but have been consolidating the traditional painting style of Chinese landscape painting, exploring ways to coexist with the present and the future.
