Maui told his brothers to pause and wait for him to pacify Tangaroa, the god of the sea, before cutting the fish. The brothers couldn't wait and cut it themselves. These cut pieces became the valleys, mountains, lakes and rocky coastline of the North Island today.
To this day, the 'Maori' name of the North Island is Te Ika a Maui ("Maui's Fish"). Looking at the map of New Zealand, you will find that the fish's head is facing south and the tail is facing north. New Zealand's South Island is also known as "TeWaka a Maui", i.e. Maui's canoe, stewart island and Ratcheura are known as "Te Punga a Maui" – maui anchors.
