Interview with Li Sheng: How to grasp the red charcoal

【Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of New China ‧ Thesis Is Written on the Ground】

Li Sheng, male, born in February 1969, born in Jinan, graduated from Shandong Medical University in 1992, majoring in hepatobiliary surgery, doctor of medicine, doctoral supervisor, researcher, professor, director of the Science and Technology Development Department of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, president of Shandong Pharmaceutical Research Institute. He is also a high-end talent post expert of Shandong Think Tank, a member of the Standing Committee of Shandong Science and Technology Association, a member of the Medical Ethics Expert Committee of Shandong Provincial Health Department, a member of Shandong Stem Cell Clinical Research Expert Committee, a supervisor of Shandong Research Hospital Association, an executive director of Shandong Pluripotent Stem Cell Bank, a vice president of Shandong Stem Cell Society, and a chairman of Shandong Health Science and Technology Association. He is a member of the editorial board of The World Chinese Journal of Digestion and the Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery.

Decades later, there are very few students who can make the teacher remember, but Li Sheng's junior high school teacher Liu Kun wrote an article 26 years later to recall this somewhat stubborn student, praising the words, "Xiao Li is a very smart student, but at the same time a less conformist child, is a person who values results and does not pay much attention to the process." ”

"The biggest help that Teacher Liu Kun has helped me is that I have a positive attitude and the courage to overcome difficulties. I often tell my students that if you can keep the teacher remembering you, it means that you are good enough. Li Sheng, director of the Science and Technology Development Department of the Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences and president of the Shandong Pharmaceutical Research Institute, said. At this time, he also became a teacher and became a doctoral supervisor and medical expert.

"For doctors, the patient is our teacher"

In 1992, Li Sheng graduated from Shandong Medical University, was assigned to work in Shandong Cancer Hospital, and quickly grew into an excellent surgeon. Talking about this experience, Li Sheng was grateful: "The hospital's environment, atmosphere and platform are very good, leaders and colleagues have provided me with a lot of help, and there are many clinical opportunities. ”

In just 9 months, he ushered in his first main surgery after work. The surgery starts in the morning and is not completed until more than one o'clock in the afternoon. "It only takes two or three hours for a mature doctor, and I have four or five hours, but this operation is very meaningful for me personally."

Talking about the impact of this operation on personal growth, Li Sheng has a lot of feelings. Since then, he said, I have established from the bottom of my heart the belief of being responsible for my patients. In the growth process of young doctors, the relationship between doctors and patients is more two-way. "Patients are both our clients and teachers for our ability to improve. Therefore, I always ask my students to always respect the patient. ”

This operation also made Li Sheng realize the lack of his own knowledge and skills, "the improvement of theoretical knowledge and the development of technology are synchronized, living to learn is always determined by the characteristics of the medical profession, and it is necessary to continuously learn and continuously improve." At the same time, Li Sheng learned that Teacher Liu Kun had been admitted to the graduate school of the Provincial Party School and told the students: "The teacher is still studying, and we students cannot be left behind." After three years of work, he was determined to continue his master's and doctoral studies.

"As long as there is a glimmer of hope, we will do our best"

Famous teachers meet high disciples, just like the wind and clouds, the golden scales turn into dragons.

Li Sheng's doctoral supervisor, Professor Li Zhanyuan, is the director of general surgery of Qilu Hospital (formerly the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Medical University), and is a famous teacher who is good at teaching by example. "What he taught by example was how surgeons carried out clinical work, how to receive patients, how to adhere to professional ethics, and had a great influence on me in surgical theory and surgical practice." Li Sheng said.

Professor Li Zhanyuan often told the students in Liaocheng dialect: "The red-hot charcoal cannot be grasped by hand, but it can be shoveled with a shovel and clipped with a clip." "It means that the surgeon can't create bigger difficulties when he encounters difficulties, but he wants to do his best to overcome all the difficulties." The simple and philosophical words not only helped Li Sheng a lot in practicing medicine, but also had a strong guiding effect on his scientific research and scientific research management. In the days that followed, Li Sheng often told his students that if he gave up being a doctor, the patient would have no hope at all. So whether at work or in life, as long as there is a glimmer of hope, we must go all out.

While clinical practice, while constantly seeking knowledge, ten years of experience as a surgeon has endowed Li Sheng with a strong team spirit, a firm will quality and a resolute execution ability.

From 2003 to 2004, Li Sheng briefly helped the National Natural Science Foundation of China, opening up a new world for him. "This work experience has made me have a drastic change in my understanding of the development of biomedicine in China, especially the standardization and systematization of scientific research management, and the gap with the advanced level of foreign countries. This has played a decisive role in my return to turning my main energy to scientific research, scientific research management and industrial development. ”

"It is not easy for a person to do a thing clearly"

For the field of medicine and health, scientific research and innovation will always be the first.

Circulating tumor cell (CTC) detection equipment, very challenging, high technical difficulty, is also a hot topic in current research. Li Sheng chose to face the difficulties.

In 1869, Australian doctor Ashworth first proposed the concept of circulating tumor cells, and referred to all kinds of tumor cells present in the peripheral blood as circulating tumor cells (CTC). CTC detection detects CTC that detects trace amounts in peripheral blood and monitors the trend of its type and quantity, so as to monitor tumor dynamics in real time, evaluate the treatment effect, and achieve personalized treatment.

"It's equivalent to finding one cancer cell in the sixth to seventh power of 10, which is very difficult." Li Sheng said that this concept has lasted more than 100 years from the first time it was proposed to the first generation of solutions in the 1990s. Around 2000, Johnson & Johnson proposed the second-generation solution of CellSearch (counting and analyzing circulating tumor cells). "Both generations have proven to be failures, and what we are now promoting and improving is the third generation."

In 2010, Li Sheng led the scientific research team to start to establish a separation technology system for circulating epithelial cells in peripheral blood, completed the first CTC diagnostic equipment and diagnostic reagents with independent intellectual property rights in China, established a clinical research and application platform for CTCs detection, and formed a "patent pool" protection, which is also the only circulating tumor cell detection and diagnosis equipment in China that has obtained CFDA medical device registration certification.

"We have the core technology." Li Sheng said that the french imported membrane is 25 microns thick, and ours is 5 microns thick; On an area of 0.95 square centimeters, our membrane has 200,000 pores, and the imported membrane has only 50,000 pores. "In terms of tumor cell identification, we use traditional pathological methods, combined with immunological methods on the basis of morphology, and can infect three targets on a single cell, solving the problem of false positives." Our biggest achievement is here. ”

In 2017, Li Sheng and his team won the first prize of Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. "Our results were led by Academician Chen Xiaoping. He said to me that it is not easy for a person to do a thing clearly, and he must insist on doing it. Li Sheng said that scientific and technological progress is endless, and all honors and achievements are just a new starting point.

"We have caught up with the best of times, and we should do it in a down-to-earth manner"

At present, Li Sheng is mainly responsible for the transformation of scientific research achievements. Different work experiences have given him a broader vision and a deeper thinking about problems.

"In the field of medical device industry, the gap between us and the world's advanced level is too big. This is also the same as our manufacturing industry, downstream low value-added work can be done very well, but there is no core technology of its own, and ultimately it is subject to people. After fully investigating the current situation of medical device research and development in Shandong, Li Sheng was deeply touched.

Qilu medical research once had a very brilliant stage in history, but now it is obviously backward and seriously mismatched with Shandong's medical and health strength. The official establishment of Shandong First Medical University has epoch-making significance for the academic development of Shandong medicine, discipline construction, and talent exchange and training, "Shandong is catching up, everyone has a sense of urgency, and Shandong First Medical University will drive the overall development of Shandong's medical and health undertakings." Li Sheng was very excited.

"In the traditional sense, Shandong Pharmaceutical ranks among the best in the country, and the overall medical level is also good." Shandong's development of the pharmaceutical industry foundation is very good, especially in recent years, Shandong will be the pharmaceutical industry into the key development of the "top ten" industry, Jinan International Medical Center, Jinan International Medical and Health City construction, will drive the sustained and rapid development of Shandong pharmaceutical industry. Li Sheng is full of confidence in the development of Shandong pharmaceutical industry.

The transformation of scientific research achievements is the key point and difficulty of the development of the pharmaceutical industry. Li Sheng believes that there are both policy factors, implementation factors, and capacity factors. He introduced that Shandong has recently introduced policies to promote the construction of the Shandong Industrial Technology Research Institute, "This is a very specific measure, which will accelerate the transformation of scientific research results into real productivity." We have caught up with the best times and caught up with the key nodes of deepening reform and opening up. Now, the state has successively launched a series of incentive measures such as 'double creation', the transformation of new and old kinetic energy, and the leadership of science and technology, and our generation should do it in a down-to-earth manner, develop with the times, and contribute to the construction of a healthy China and a healthy Shandong." ”
