Steinmeier praised Merkel and thanked her for her contribution to the German people. Steinmeier also gave notice of the end of his term to German Deputy Chancellor Olaf Scholz, other ministers in Merkel's government and Chancellor Braun.
The report pointed out that Merkel will continue to perform her duties as chancellor until the next prime minister is appointed.
Germany's new Bundestag was first convened on 26 October, and Berger Bass, 53, vice-chairman of the SPD parliamentary caucus, was elected as the new speaker. Under German law, the current government is expected to step down on the day the new Bundestag is first convened to become a caretaker cabinet.
