Li Yutang was born in 1899 in Guangrao County, Shandong Province, the family is a landlord, he ranked fourth, the family is rich, very early to go to private school, all the way to the Whampoa Military Academy, after the first period of graduation, he went to the National Revolutionary Army as a probationary officer, because of the bravery of the battle, outstanding achievements, even promoted to division commander.
Subsequently, when the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out, he was appointed commander of the Eighth Army of the Kuomintang Army, stationed in Jiangxi, and in 1939, he led his troops to block the Japanese army at Coffin Mountain near Wuning, and held the position to the battlefield, and the whole army made meritorious achievements, and the Kuomintang Anti-Japanese War Headquarters awarded Li Yutang the title of "Taishan Army". Soon, the ministry was renamed the Tenth Army, and he continued to serve as commander and was ordered to garrison Changsha.
From 1939 to 1942, the Japanese army invaded Changsha three times, Li Yutang led his subordinates to give the Japanese army a heavy blow, in 1941, the second Changsha Conference, Li Yutang insisted until reinforcements arrived, only to repel the Japanese army, but the superiors wanted to pursue the responsibility for the loss of Jinjing, so Li Yutang was dismissed.
After the news spread, the Tenth Army strongly protested that Li Yutang was obviously meritorious, and if he did not commend him, he would have to be removed from his post; at the same time, Zhong Bin, who had received a letter of appointment from the commander of the 10th Army, deliberately postponed his appointment after knowing the truth, and the Tenth Army became a team without a commander.
In December, the Japanese army launched the Third Battle of Changsha, the army can not be without a leader, the commander Xue Yue had to come forward to ask Li Yutang to return, but was refused, until Chiang Kai-shek personally called, Li Yutang returned to the army, and promised to coexist and die with Changsha.
After that, we also knew that we won a great victory in the Third Changsha Conference, and Li Yutang's "Taishan Army" became famous.
Li Yutang's loyalty to Chiang Kai-shek could be seen by the discerning people, but after the Liberation War began, the Kuomintang was defeated step by step, and Li Yutang was powerless, and finally could only follow the troops to withdraw to Taiwan.
But what he did not expect was that as soon as he arrived in Taiwan, he was dismissed, and then his wife was arrested because she was a Communist Party, and Li Yutang wrote a letter to his brother-in-law after hearing about it, but this letter was intercepted by the Kuomintang, and Li Yutang was also arrested.
But he did not know about his wife's behavior, so he could not be sentenced to death, Li Yutang was sentenced to 15 years, unfortunately, when Jiang Zhong was approving this verdict, he personally approved a "shame" word on the verdict, and in this way, Li Yutang and his wife were shot and killed.
Before dying, Li Yutang left a suicide note, which read: My life is over, but the incident has nothing to do with me, the presidential order, the appeal has no room, I hope to have public opinion after my death, and I am unwilling.
He and his wife did not have children, which meant that the whole family disappeared.
However, in July 1983, Li Yutang was posthumously awarded the title of revolutionary martyr, which can be regarded as compensation for his lifelong contribution to the country.
Li Yutang's fate is really lamentable, how brilliant he once was, we can see from foreign evaluations, after the war, President Roosevelt of the United States said: "The victory of the Allied forces is all due to the great victory of the Chinese army in Changsha." ”
The British media also wrote: "At this time when the clouds in the Far East are thick, only the clouds over Changsha are truly brilliant." ”
Later, Chiang Kai-shek also felt remorseful, thinking that things might not be so simple at the beginning, so he let his confidants check the original commission, and finally knew that he had wronged Li Yutang, he did not betray himself from beginning to end, and for many years after that, he could not help but read Li Yutang's name.
