The American painter and educator Joseph DeCamp (November 5, 1858 – February 11, 1923) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied with the painter Frank Duveneck. In the second half of the 1870s, he went to the Royal Academy in Munich for further study and spent some time in Florence, Italy, before returning to Boston in 1883.

De Camp became a member of the Boston School led by Edmund C. Tarbell and Emil Otto Grundmann, specializing in figure painting and adopting a toneist style in the 1890s, becoming one of the founders of the American Impressionist group Ten Painters of America in 1897. In 1895 Decamp was hired to teach at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but resigned a year later due to ill health. From 1903 to 1923, he was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Teachers College of Art, teaching the human body and portraiture. He also teaches painting at the Museum college of Fine Arts in Boston.

In 1902, he was elected an associate member of the National College of Design. A fire in his Boston studio in 1904 destroyed hundreds of his early paintings, including nearly all of his landscapes. He died in Boca Grande, Florida in 1923.
