1. Fast extensive reading

Usually, we should develop the habit of rapid extensive reading. Extensive reading here refers to the extensive reading of a large number of books involving different fields, requiring fast reading, understanding and mastering the main content of the book. It is necessary to determine a clear reading quota, and the quota should be combined with one's own reality, which is practical and feasible, and can be more or less. For example, if you read 20 pages a day, you can read 21 books of medium thickness (about 120 pages each) in a semester of 18 weeks.

2. Timed reading

After school, you should develop the habit of timed reading. Timed reading can be carried out for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, and it should not be too long. Because of the timekeeping and rapid reading, the energy is highly concentrated, and the time is long, it is easy to fatigue, distraction, but boring. When reading, first write down the "starting time", and when reading, write down the "finishing time" to calculate the reading speed. Write it down casually, and if you insist on it for a long time, you will definitely receive obvious results.

3. Skimming

Skimming, also known as reading and skipping or glancing, is a specialized, very practical and fast reading skill. Skimming refers to reading as quickly as possible, as quickly as possible from a bird's eye view of the ground on a clear sign, to get the gist or central idea of the article. In other words, skimming requires the reader to read selectively, skipping certain details in order to grasp the general idea of the article and thus speed up the reading speed. According to statistics, the reading speed of a trained skimmer can reach 3,000 to 4,000 words per minute.

When reading, first take a cursory look at the article to see if there is any material and information that you need for work and study or that you are interested in, and then determine whether the article is worth perusing. When looking for information, you can use skimming techniques when you don't have enough time and don't need a high level of understanding. "No high level of comprehension required" does not mean that the level of comprehension can be low when skimming, but rather that the level of comprehension achieved at a slightly lower reading speed than the average reading speed is permissible.

The goal of general reading is to achieve the highest possible level of comprehension, usually 70% or 80%, while maintaining a general reading speed. When skimming, a slightly lower level of comprehension is expected, with an average comprehension rate of 50% or 60%.

Skimming has the following four characteristics:

(1) Read large amounts of material at an extremely fast pace, looking for literal or de facto primary information and a small amount of expository information.

(2) You can skip a certain part or some parts do not read.

(3) The level of understanding can be slightly lower, but not too low.

(4) According to the difficulty of the article and the purpose achieved, constantly adjust the reading speed flexibly.

Skimming can be done using the following techniques:

(1) Use typographical details, such as titles, subtitles, subtitles, italic words, bold words, footnotes, punctuation marks, etc. of books or articles, to preview and skirp. Predictive skimming should understand the author's thinking, the way the article is (patterns), in order to grasp the general idea, the relevant details and their interrelationships.

(2) At the general reading speed (200~ 250wpm), read the first and second paragraphs at the beginning of the article, and strive to grasp the general idea of the article, the background situation, the author's article style, tone or tone.

(3) Read the subject sentence and concluding sentence of the paragraph. Grasp the theme sentence to grasp the general idea of the paragraph, and then omit the details and do not read, in order to achieve skimming speed.

(4) Pay attention to transition words and sequence words. Inflection words such as however, moreover, in addition, etc.; sequence words firstly, secondly, etc.

(5) If you don't need to, you don't have to read the details.

4.Reading (Scanning)

Searching, also known as reading, is also a fast reading technique like skimming. Skilled readers are adept at using reading to obtain specific information to improve reading efficiency.

Reading is a quick reading method that quickly finds a specific fact or a specific piece of information from a large number of materials, such as people, events, times, places, numbers, etc., while omitting other unrelated parts. Using this method, the reader can skim through as much printed material as possible in the shortest possible time and find the information they need. For example, this method can be used to find the running time of a train or car at a station, to find the flight time of a certain flight at an airport, to find a catalog of books in a library, to find a date, name, number, or number in an article.

As a reading technique for quickly finding information, reading requires both speed and accuracy. Specifically, the search has a clear purpose, and the answer to the question is selected in a targeted manner. Therefore, the whole paragraph of text can be directly reflected in the brain, and there is no need to look at every word and sentence. When the line of sight is skimmed over the printed material, once the relevant content is found, it should be stopped for a while, and it should be remembered or taken off, which not only ensures the speed of reading, but also accurate, so the reading technique is also very practical. Lookup is different from skimming. When skimming, the reader knows nothing about the material in advance, while the search is carried out when the reader has an understanding of the material. For example, looking for a phone book, the reader knows the name of the recipient and also knows that the phone book is arranged alphabetically by last name. In this way, when looking for Jackson's phone, you can use the identification words at the top of the page, and then quickly turn to the page beginning with J in alphabetical order of the last name, so as to find the telephone page number under Jackson's name.

In order to conduct the search effectively, the reader should use the following techniques.

(1) The use of material arrangement form. The information is mostly in alphabetical order. Such as dictionaries, indexes, postal code books, telephone number books and other reference books. Of course, not all information is arranged in alphabetical order. For example, TV shows are arranged by date and time. Historical information is arranged chronologically, and sports pages in newspapers are arranged by category of competition (football, volleyball, tennis), etc. Regardless of the source, it is arranged in some logical way. For example, to know when something happened, check the date; who did it, look up the name of the person, and so on.

(2) Use chapter titles and descriptions. After reading, first look at the article title or chapter title to determine whether the article contains the materials you need, or which part contains which materials, so that you can directly turn to that part and search.

(3) Grab the prompt words. Readers find chapters that contain the required information and are ready to read them. At this time, pay attention to the prompt words related to that specific information. For example, if you look for a track and field athlete's athletic achievements in a sports section of a newspaper, his country name is a hint. After looking for the name of a person in New York City in an encyclopedia, after turning to the chapter on New York City, words such as population, census, inhabitants, etc. are prompt words, and if you find the prompt word, you can use the general reading speed to get the information you need.

The above is the introduction of four quick methods of practice, in fact, these methods have been used in ordinary life and learning, but we do not realize it, and once they are selected as methods individually, and then according to their requirements to insist on practicing, it will achieve good results. This also shows that there are many ways to improve the speed of reading around us, and the key depends on how you dig into these methods.
