Emperor Xuanzong of Tang was one of the most prominent monarchs in the history of the Tang Dynasty, who led the country to economic prosperity and political stability, and implemented a series of reforms that benefited the country and its people. However, after the Anshi Rebellion, Xuanzong lost control of the country and was forced into exile in Shuzhong. However, his son Tang Suzong was not willing to let Xuanzong enjoy his old age in peace, but insisted on welcoming him back.

Why did Tang Suzong have to welcome back Xuanzong, instead of leaving Xuanzong to retire in Shuzhong?

Tang Suzong welcomed Tang Xuanzong back to Chang'an from Shuzhong, and his mood was very complicated. There are several reasons, one, he has to do it, two, he doesn't want to, and three, he has to.

First, Tang Suzong must do this.

Although Tang Su Zongming is already the emperor of the Tang Dynasty on the surface, there are some things he wants to explain to the people of the world and let the people of the world understand. All of this needs the signboard of Tang Xuanzong.

The outbreak of the Anshi Rebellion, especially the loss of Tongguan, made Tang Xuanzong chaotic, and under the instigation of Yang Guozhong, Tang Xuanzong and the crown prince, Yang Guifei, Yang Guozhong and others went all the way west and fled to Shu.

After arriving at Maweipo in Shaanxi, the forbidden army mutiny killed Yang Guifei, Yang Guozhong and others, and prepared to continue westward into Shu. Then they found that the people had surrounded them and asked them to stay. Under the efforts of his eldest son Li Jiao and palace official Li Fuguo, the crown prince Li Heng took this opportunity to separate from Tang Xuanzong and go north.

On July 12, 756 AD, a month after Li Heng and Tang Xuanzong separated, the crown prince Li Heng ascended the throne in Lingwu as Tang Suzong.

Although, on August 16, Tang Xuanzong declared in Shu that he recognized Li Heng's ascension to the throne, and sent someone to Lingwu with the jade seal and the edict to officially canonize Li Heng as emperor. But, after all, Li Heng came first, and this point cannot be justified no matter what.

If, when the overall situation settles down, it will be a little embarrassing if Tang Xuanzong is not brought back from Shuzhong as soon as possible. Therefore, Li Heng must take this signboard back to show the legitimacy of his position.

Second, in fact, Tang Suzong didn't want to see Tang Xuanzong in his heart.

There is no relationship between father and son. In the year when the Anshi Rebellion broke out, the crown prince Li Heng was forty-six years old, and he had been the prince for eighteen years.

In the past eighteen years of the crown prince, Li Heng was trembling and frightened, walking on thin ice. Tang Xuanzong did not appreciate Li Heng, if, the former crown prince Li Ying was not deposed and killed in one day with the other two princes for the crime of treason, if it was not when the forces of all parties were arguing, Gao Lishi said: Establish the elder as the prince. I'm afraid that Li Heng will be a prince until he dies.

Subsequently, in the two rebellion cases against him set off by Li Linfu, Li Heng wisely abolished the two concubines. Li Heng is also afraid that he will follow in the footsteps of the former prince Li Ying.

When the Anshi Rebellion broke out, Tang Xuanzong, who was in his seventies, was ready to drive the imperial expedition in person and let Li Heng supervise the country, but he was disturbed by Yang Guozhong. Without the sudden change of Ma Weipo, it is really unknown when Li Heng's crown prince will be the head.

Therefore, Tang Suzong really didn't want to see this person, but he had to see, at least, from the perspective of filial piety, he also took him back from Shu to block the mouths of the world. Bi Jing, Tang Xuanzong is his father.

Third, judging from the overall situation, Tang Suzong had to take Tang Xuanzong back.

Tang Xuanzong is not an emperor who gives up power lightly, and he is extremely courageous, it is difficult to say that one day in the future, when the overall situation is settled, Tang Xuanzong, who has settled down from chaos, will still be as keen on power as before. At that time, whether Tang Suzong can be sure to compete with him, there is really no bottom in his heart.

Again, the rebellion of Yongwang Li Lan is even more of a dangerous signal. This shows that his princely brothers did not recognize him as an emperor from the bottom of their hearts. It also shows that his position is not stable.

The perfect plan is to bring Tang Xuanzong back from Shudi, put him in Chang'an, and put it under his own eyelids.

Therefore, Tang Suzong Li Heng let his father Li Longji return to Chang'an basically based on these three purposes. Later, the father and son did have some unpleasant experiences, but most of them were caused by Li Fuguo. Soon after Li Longji's death, Li Heng, who was sick at the time, was overly sad because of his father's death, and he also passed away.

As the crown prince, Tang Suzong inherited the position of the emperor, but the position of the emperor is not justified, and the position of the emperor is established by himself. He needs to be affirmed by others, that is to say, he needs Tang Xuanzong to recognize its reasonable inheritance, and he pursued Tang Xuanzong as the Taishang Emperor at that time, which was also his unilateral claim. In order to conform to his consciousness, Tang Xuanzong was unwilling to refute it, and everything was focused on the overall situation, so he chose to abdicate. The main reason is because Tang Xuanzong is not a person who attaches great importance to interests.

Li Longji also cooperated with Princess Taiping to carry out the palace change at that time, and after this time, he sent his father to the highest position, but because his father couldn't handle it, he gave it to Li Longji. And Li Longji's survival is also through his own struggle. But in fact, there is an essential difference, and it is not necessary to sit on the throne and ignore it. Li Longji can actually prove his status in strength and all aspects, so even if Li Longji has the heart of a mother and daughter at that time, he may not be able to succeed.
