But you may not know that the real Bethune is not a stereotypical Doctor Wenruo, but a fierce communist fighter. He was not the kind eyebrow that many people imagined, and this silver-haired foreigner stared angrily. Bethune was born in a fairly wealthy family, materially superior, living in luxury, and living like a rich second generation. You sit in the examination room, the image of a polite doctor, not a surgeon, Bethune full of explosive enthusiasm and creativity, his pursuit of surgical skill and speed, a drastic combination of separation. Even today, the rib alkali he invented is still in use.
Such a young, handsome doctor is also full of charm for women, he is in love with more than one girl at the same time, lingering feelings fill the first half of his life, but his violent temper and control desire make his wife unbearable, and the problem of alcoholism makes his family worse. He married, divorced, remarried, divorced again, and even paralyzed himself with drugs.
His colleague said in his report on Bethune:
"For misconduct and other reasons, he was an alcoholic and his physical and mental condition was always unfit for the meticulous work of leadership."

Although such a Bethune does not sound like a good person in the traditional sense, after experiencing the lows of his life, he finally found his faith.
In 1926, Bethune was infected with tuberculosis by a patient, and after being cured, she studied the disease in depth, so that she realized that the tuberculosis epidemic had deeper social causes, and tuberculosis would not be cured without poverty and poor living conditions. After visiting the Soviet Union, he found that communist publicly-funded medical care was more secure than the Western medical system at that time, and he finally realized that in the past, his thinking was only the privilege of a very small number of rich people in capitalist society, and only communism could truly redeem the people in the depths of the water.
In 1935, Bethune joined the Communist Party of Canada, the most important choice of his life. In a foreign middle-aged man, he finally found his inner light, first participating in the Spanish anti-fascist war, and then coming to China in 1938 to participate in the War of Resistance Against Japan. He deliberately grew his beard as Lenin's key. If anyone praises him for being like Lenin, he will be as happy as a child. In fact, some people in China really say that he is like Lenin, and this person is Chairman Mao. Not everyone has courage. Edgar Snow, who came to Yan'an in 1938, was one, and Bethune was another.
When he set foot on Chinese soil, the behavior of the Prodigal Sons was completely abandoned, and he became a pure person who was strict with himself and had no bad habits. Once a lover of luxury, he not only refused the kuomintang medical department to retain her, but also refused the communists' kindness to keep her in Yan'an. Someone kindly asked him not to go to the dangerous front line, so he angrily threw a chair out of the window, and finally he stepped on the front line of ancestor worship as he wished.
He was the only surgeon in Hebei at that time, especially on the front line behind enemy lines, and under the condition of such a lack of medical resources, he changed the medical situation in Youxi District with a way that almost overdrawn his life. He scolded irresponsible hygienists and even kicked caretakers out of the caves who did not take serious care of the wounded. In order to treat the wounded in time, he had to perform surgery close to the battlefield. The nearest cannon rang out, and the whole roof was shaken and dust fell. In the sound of gunfire, he was no longer curing the disease, but saving his life. Later, the soldiers in jinzhong often shouted such slogans: comrades. It doesn't matter if you're injured, Dr. Bethune is right behind us.
In October 1939, the Japanese army was carrying out a crazy winter sweep program, Bethune accidentally cut his finger during the operation, he quickly dipped his finger into the disinfectant, but did not completely treat the wound, still in danger of infection. Sentry at this time. It is being rolled out and withdrawn from the front line as soon as possible. Instead of caring for himself, he chose to treat the wounds of the wounded first, and then it was a punctured finger, repeated infection, inflammation, and pain. Even so, he insisted on thirteen more surgeries before he collapsed in his hospital bed because of sepsis. On the morning of November 11, at the end of his life, Bethune struggled to sit up and wrote a long letter to his friend Nie Rongzhen with a trembling hand. Nie Rongzhen burst into tears in front of everyone and wrote in the letter: The last two years have been the most pleasant days of my life, and here I still have a lot to say to my comrades, but I can't write it down anymore, let me send you and millions of dear comrades with a thousand times more thanks.
In the early hours of November 12, he left. In his short two years in China, he saved the fighters who resisted Japan and saved the country, and also the salvation of his own life and soul. In his hometown, perhaps people do not know that the name Bethune has been equated with the hero. But where he was seen and buried, there were millions of dear comrades who watched for him, and a new sun rose in the land that had been under fire.
