The English Patient (1996)

From long love stories to open-air cinematic footage, modern cinema is hardly as romantic as an adaptation of Michael Ondajet's Booker Award-winning novel

Director Anthony Minggra separates the storyline between pre-war Egypt and post-war Italy, giving a clever glimpse of the two places: the bombed-out villa in Tuscany and the Arab Lawrence-Egyptian desert mop (the film was actually shot in Tunisia)

It may be thrilling, but the genius Mr. Ripley happens to be one of the most beautiful depictions of Italy ever filmed in the film. Set in the 1950s, you'll follow what happened to a group of young characters, traveling through their extravagant, treacherous vacations, from the pristine beaches of Lazio to luxury hotels in Venice.

Richard (played by Leonardo DiCaprio as a boy) finds himself wandering from one Thai hotel to another, desperately searching for something meaningful. Another traveler from Bangkok put him on a journey to an inaccessible island known as the ultimate paradise – white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and a handful of travelers who were sworn in to keep the secrets of their location. Of course, heaven isn't exactly the same, but it's also true of the real world, as fans have since sabotaged the mayan beach, where they were filmed, forcing it to close.

The film tells the story of two best friends and a sexy old woman traveling through Mexico in search of a magical (and also fictional) beach called "The Mouth of Paradise." Director Alfonso Cullen shows the beauty of Oaxaca, but also gives a glimpse into poverty in Mexico, where most films mask it.

Angel Amelie (2001

Paris is one of the highlights of this sun-drenched modern fairy tale. Jean-Pierre Junet's camera gazes at the city through candy-colored lenses, mainly following the eccentric and lonely heroine (Audrey Tato) through the winding streets of Montmartre, from the green waters of the Canal Saint-Martin to the red lights of the pigalle adult goods store, where everything seems to be illuminated from the inside. The city has never been more dreamy.

For anyone who has ever studied or lived abroad, discovering a Spanish apartment is like finding the Rosetta Stone. The film follows a French student, Xavier, to Barcelona in search of himself.
