Yes, how can two people with different family backgrounds, educational backgrounds, and social circles come together, and even if they come together, the ending often ends in failure and tragedy.

The above is my first impression of watching the movie "Martin Eden". And, of course, the second, reminds me of Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bening, who hanged himself at home in 2017. So Martin Eden decided to do whatever it took to learn so that one day he could think like these literate people. The only way he can achieve this goal is to acquire knowledge.

A scene before the poet's death is interesting—Martin Eden sits next to Breston, who is sick in bed, and sees a Bible on the table, and he reaches out to try to flip through the book, and Breston stops him. Subsequently, we learn that Breston ended his life with a gun hidden in the book.

If this book of the Bible symbolizes knowledge and faith, then there is no doubt that the director is reminding us that knowledge and faith are very dangerous for some people, that they are poison through the intestines, that they are the trigger for tragedy.

Back in the movie—after Breston's death, the whole tone, mood, and tone of the film takes a one hundred and eighty-degree turn, and martin, the formerly enthusiastic, sentimental, flesh-and-blood sailor, is completely gone, replaced by a great writer Martin, who has achieved fame, a pale face, hippie and even disgusting.

"Martin Eden" rhythmically runs through some pseudo-documentary-style images similar to old photos from beginning to end, which contrast strongly with the space formed by the main story line, which is not too directly related to the main story, if the other main space is a real thing, then this space represents Martin Eden's inner world. The world consists of memory, innocence, happiness, poverty, and so on, and these emotions are in turn tied to the history of Italy.

Naturally, Martin Eden is the protagonist of the film, but he is also the subjective perspective that brings the audience into the play. Therefore, when I watch this movie, it is the story listening and emotional feeling that go hand in hand, which depends on the existence of the two spaces of the film. And those old images accompanied by those old Italian pop songs make this movie have a kind of nostalgia and sadness.

In the middle of the film, after Martin Eden is paid, Breston advises him to return to his career as a sailor... When he came, he faced the sea, hesitated for a long time, and finally, in the direction of the sun, swam into the depths of the sea. The movie ends.
