Born in Chicago, Usa, Hemingway is one of the most famous novelists of the 20th century, and he once won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the highest award in the literary world, and for his novel "The Old Man and the Sea", which is rare in the history of world literature.
Most of the writers who won the Nobel Prize in Literature are representative novels, except for Hemingway, who is an exception, which shows how influential and high the literary value of his "The Old Man and the Sea" is.
You may not have read The Old Man and the Sea, but you must have heard the saying that man can be destroyed, but not defeated. This is the most famous classic quote in the whole novel, and it is also the ideological core of the entire novel conveyed by Hemingway and his own concept of life.
He believes that life in the world is a process of constantly challenging oneself. In the process, we will encounter many difficulties and obstacles, which can be completely eliminated, or lose time, and eventually grow old.

Throughout the novel, we will find that the story line is not complicated, mainly revolving around an old man and several fish, but the process of fighting has great meaning. On the surface, the old man is fighting with fish, but in fact, it reflects the core of man's struggle with nature.
The old man went out to the sea to fish alone, indicating that man had to rely only on himself in this life, and the final destination was only himself; the old man went through eighty-four days but found nothing, aiming to tell us that efforts may not be rewarded, but if we do not work hard, we will definitely fail.
Eventually, the old man continued to go to sea on the eighty-fifth day, and finally hit a large marlin larger than the boat, but fought with it for three days and three nights in the process.
The old man was victorious, but on the way back he encountered sharks, which came in droves smelling blood and finally carved up the big marlin.
This is intended to tell us that if life is smooth, it is our luck, and if it is repeated twists and turns, it is a norm. Life is endless, the struggle is not stopped, and the will to live is not given up, in order to glimpse more possibilities in life.
After reading Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", I felt a strong belief support and inner strength, and I realized that Hemingway's philosophy of life is worth chewing carefully for a lifetime.
If we can understand the concept of how he expressed, then in the process of moving forward, we will not take so many detours and suffer so many losses.
01: After adulthood, loneliness is a normal life
The old man often goes out to the sea to fish alone, he has lived out a state, at first he will feel lonely, and then he will reconcile with loneliness, so he feels that loneliness is also a kind of enjoyment.
He always had a way to keep himself positive and optimistic, and as the boat kept moving forward, he would look up and talk to passing birds, and he would bow his head and talk to the fish in the sea.
He feels that everything in the world is alive, and as long as you are honest with it, you can always find a lot of resonance.
This positive and optimistic spirit of the elderly has infected many people. When we become adults, we often feel lonely, but slowly we will find that loneliness is a normal life.
Before his wife died, the old man was not as alone as he is now, and at that time he felt that someone knew himself and could share it with him no matter what kind of things he encountered.
But later, when his wife left, he often stood alone with his wife's relics in a daze, often thinking: If she was still alive, would her life be different?
But just think about it, he has become one with this loneliness, even if there is only one person, he will face fate unyieldingly, in his view, life is endless, the struggle will never stop.
02: People live to the end, and the only people who can rely on themselves are themselves
When we are young, we have high expectations for interpersonal relationships, and we always feel that there are many friends and multiple roads, and we must expand our social circle as much as possible.
But if you live to a certain age, you will find that when people live to the end, the only people they can rely on are themselves. As Jia Pingwa said in one of his essays in "Walking Alone":
"Life-sharing friends may know that I have a few moles on my face but don't know what I'm thinking; spiritual companions know what I'm thinking, but they don't know what my habits are." Happiness comes, and the happiest is myself; when suffering comes, it is myself who bears silently. ”
Deeply believed, there is no real sense of empathy in the world, and there are not too many expectations for interpersonal relationships, so there is not so much disappointment.
03: As long as you don't give up, you never have to submit to fate
The old man's life is a life full of ups and downs, but also a life of continuous struggle and never giving up, in the process of going out to sea to fish, he has encountered countless winds and tsunamis, but he has never given up the will to live.
Gradually, he has become accustomed to these sufferings, he feels that he is born to struggle, as long as you do not give up your confidence in life, there is always a way to overcome the challenges of the outside world, so as to live a stronger self.
The old man did not catch a fish for eighty-four days in a row, but he did not complain a word, nor did he accept the sympathy of others, he felt that this was normal, hard work was not necessarily rewarding, and there was no regret after trying his best.
So he continued on the eighty-fifth day, and even though he finally hit a marlin the size of three houses after much hardship, he was eventually ransacked by a group of sharks, and he still did not complain.
Instead, after returning home, he tried to adjust his state and continue to set off after dawn, and this will not accept defeat allowed him to have a steady stream of strength to climb to a new height in life no matter what kind of environment he was in.
04: People can be destroyed, but they cannot be defeated
A person can be destroyed, can disappear in this world for various reasons, but as long as you do not give up the will to live, you will never be defeated, and you will never have to submit to anyone.
The most powerful thing in the world is the human heart, the human will. As long as you subjectively do not give up, there will be endless hope and a steady stream of motivation and strength.
This is Hemingway's philosophy of life, and it is also the core idea conveyed to us by the novel "The Old Man and the Sea".
