A scandal in the Chinese chess world: rigidity and conservatism, power struggle for profit - boycott of the second Ying Cup

The Ying Cup World Professional Go Championship, founded by Mr. Ying Changqi of Taiwan in 1988, has contributed to the development of World Go. According to his own words, the first Ying Cup was specially held for Nie Weiping, and he fervently hoped that Nie Weiping would win the championship. According to this situation, the relationship between Mr. Ying Changqi and the Chinese Chess Academy should be very close, but four years later, there was an extreme incident in which the Chinese Chess Academy boycotted the second Ying Cup. This is undoubtedly a scandal in the Chinese chess world, which makes chess fans feel that the clouds are obscured inexplicably, causing significant economic losses to the players who failed to participate in the competition and the Chinese chess academy. So how did the events that led to such a three-lose situation happen?

In November 1991, the Chinese Weiqi Association and the Chinese Chess Academy (two cards and one team) held a special meeting to discuss the preparation and participation of the second Ying Cup. At the meeting, the relevant leaders briefed them on the situation of attending the preparatory meeting for the Ying Cup tournament in Tokyo, saying that there were quite different differences with the organizers and no agreement was reached: First, the China Weiqi Association would undertake the event in Beijing, and now the plan is to change it to Shanghai; second, Jiang Zhujiu and Rui Yiwei, who are overseas, are invited to participate in the competition.

There were two outcomes of the discussions: First, the majority of the people had the greatest opinion on not allowing the Chinese Weiqi Association to be held in Beijing. Second, the leaders of individual important national Go teams are absolutely opposed to inviting Jiang Zhujiu and Rui Yiwei to participate. In order to solve the problem, Nian Weisi, who was then the party secretary of the China Chess Academy, entrusted Hao Keqiang (who had long been the president of New Sports magazine and was an advisor to the Chinese Chess Academy at the time) to communicate with Mr. Ying Changqi, who was in Shanghai.

Mr. Ying Changqi

Just that month, Hao Keqiang went to Shanghai with relevant people, visited Mr. Ying Changqi twice, and talked about the Ying Cup competition twice. Mr. Ying Changqi explained it like this: Changing his mind in Shanghai, mainly because the cost of the Beijing plan is very high, and the plan cost proposed by Shanghai is almost half; moreover, the first Ying Cup has been held in Beijing, and this time it has changed places; regarding the matter of the participants, Jiang Zhujiu has been promised to participate in the competition, but it can be discussed; the specific matter is solved by Chairman Shen Junshan (who was the chairman of the "Ying Chang period Go Education Foundation").

At the end of January 1992, Shen Junshan made a special trip to Beijing to discuss the Ying Cup competition. Before coming, he sent three opinions in advance: First, he accepted the opinions of the Chinese Weiqi Association and no longer invited Jiang Zhujiu to participate. The second is to ask the Chinese Weiqi Association to agree to entrust the Shanghai Sports Commission to host the event. The third is to agree to invite the world's only woman, Jiudan Ruiwei, to participate in the competition, not to occupy the Chinese quota.

I personally feel that Mr. Ying Changqi and Shen Junshan, as the organizers, are still very measured, have made great concessions, and given enough face to the Chinese chess community.

However, the attitude of the Chinese Weiqi Association is surprisingly tough. When meeting and discussing internally, many people believed that it must be undertaken by the Chinese Weiqi Association, which is a matter of principle and cannot be backed down. In addition, the leaders of the national Go team at that time had a lot of opinions about Rui's participation. The reason is that in the 1987 Sino-Japanese Go Tournament, Rui Yiwei went to Play Chess in The Room of Yoshiki Ida because he violated the rules of the team, and the Chess Academy made a written review of it and suspended some matches. Coupled with other factors, Rui Later applied to withdraw from the national team, was approved and returned to Shanghai, and later went to Japan to study.

The final result was: in July 1992, the second YingShi Cup was held as scheduled in Tokyo, Japan, and the Chinese Weiqi Association did not participate in this competition. Jiang Zhujiu and Rui Yiwei were invited to participate, and Rui Yiwei advanced to the final four together with Zhao Zhixun, Xu Fengsu, and Dazhu Hero. This also proves that the organizer invited Rui Towei to participate in the competition with vision and is correct.

Jiang Zhujiu Rui Wei and his wife

On the issue of boycotting the second Ying Cup, Mr. Luo Jianwen, one of the leaders of the Chinese Weiqi Association and a famous Go player, said this when answering a reporter's question a long time later: The second Ying Cup did not talk about the factors, and one of course was some dispute over the issue of the right to host. For the participation of Jiang Zhujiu and Rui Yiwei, some of them are now inaccurately written. Because at that time, they were still chess players of the Chinese Weiqi Association, and they had not yet entered the American Weiqi Association or gone to South Korea. We believe that it is okay to invite them to participate in the Tournament, but agree that it should be decided by the Chinese Weiqi Association not to agree that their participation should be decided by the Chinese Weiqi Association, which is the practice of international competitions. The list of candidates for the Fujitsu Cup and the Toyo Securities Cup is like this, no one has specified it, and who will participate in the competition will be decided by your association. But at that time, the organizer of the Ying's Cup said: I will ask whoever I want to pay. If you want to please whomever you want, it is equivalent to an invitational tournament. The Ying Cup is a world championship, a world championship, so this is not in line with the convention of the world championship. Because at that time, Rui Yiwei was the only woman in the world, Jiudan, and later we agreed to her participation. And our opinion on Jiang Zhujiu at that time was that you can come back and select.

Combining the above causes and consequences, we can glimpse the whole picture of the Withdrawal of the Chinese Chess Academy from the second Ying Cup. The main reason is not the question of Rui's participation, but the question of who will organize it and where. Obviously, in order to compete for power and profit (the right to hold the game, the budget is high, the chess academy is profitable), coupled with the rigidity of the mechanism, the lack of flexibility, and the conservative thinking of individual leaders, obstinacy, and finally led to the boycott of the second Ying Cup scandal.
