Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica" is a collection of Materia Medica before the Ming Dynasty, and for the first time, the compendium system was used as a classification of drugs, creating a precedent for successive Materia Medica works. The book consists of 52 volumes and nearly 1.9 million words, of which 1892 kinds of drugs are recorded, with 11096 prescriptions and 1109 medicine pictures.
