2021/4/15 《The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara》

The painting The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara depicts the martyrdom of St. Barbara during the Roman period. In the 7th century there was a rich pagan, his daughter named Barbara, in order to protect her daughter, her father locked her in a tower and isolated from the world, but she was inspired by God to preach the Trinity, became a Christian behind her back, and firmly believed, manifested many miracles, and finally was betrayed by her father and martyred, and then her father and executioner who killed her were also killed by lightning.
The woman kneeling in the painting is the martyr St. Barbara, whose father holds a large knife and executes herself, next to four Roman officers and soldiers supervising the execution. In the lower right corner is the family coat of arms of a wealthy German merchant in Augsburg, a customizer. The dress in the work is reminiscent of the early 16th century German fashion, with a saint's skirt with extravagant pearl trims and ripped cuffs; his father's conch bird ear protector helmet, cracked puff sleeves, striped leggings, fancy knee pads; and the wooden decorative apron of the soldier wearing armor on the left has an exotic Brazilian Indian (Native American) style.

Old Lucas. Lucas Cranach the elder (1472–1553)
Lucas Cranach the Elder was one of the most versatile artists of the Renaissance in northern Europe, with whom Martin Luther had a deep friendship and painted several portraits for him. Born in 1472 in Kronach, the town of Kranach in frankfurt, Germany, he traveled through southern Germany as a young man and did not settle in Vienna until around 1500. From 1505 onwards he was employed as a court painter under Duke Frederick of Wittenburg in southwestern Germany, and was also a painter who could represent Protestantism. He opened a painting workshop in the region, and also ran a wine manufacturing and pharmacy, and also held the public office of mayor. Old Lucas. Cranach died in Weimar on 16 October 1553, and his studio was inherited by his son Lucas Cranach Jr.
In painting, it is mainly influenced by Italian painting and Dürer, the work is sincere, full of humor, good at painting religious and mythological subjects, but also shows a strong interest in natural landscapes. The emphasis on emotional communication, the preference for drama, and the poetic depiction of natural scenery in the Danube region became the geographical factors that constituted his creative vocabulary; the northern painting tradition was embodied in two parts - the depiction of details in form and the vivid color.
While living in Vienna from 1502 onwards, his works show that Cranach was already a fairly outstanding and mature artist. The works of this period are regarded as a dramatic style of sound and color , very different from his contemporaries , whose work is regarded as a pioneer of the " Donauschule " ( a common trend that emerged in the Danube valleys of bavaria and Austria in southern Germany between 1490 and 1540 ) . With bold use of color and vivid brushstrokes, the characters show a wealth of emotions. The most notable feature is the love of presenting large areas of natural landscapes in the paintings; covering religious stories and myths and legends, the beautiful scenery of the Danube River is also included, and the realistic landscape blends with the pursuit of ideals.
