Study: Nine Rays of The First Lilly feel heartache when separated from their lover

author:New Overseas Life

The small convict cichlid distributed in Central America, despite being only a few centimeters long, is emotionally rich; French researchers have found that this monogamous tropical fish can feel heartache when separated from its lover.

Perhaps even more heartbreaking is the "pessimistic" behavior of the females in experiments when paired with male partners who are not their intended males.

Scientists believe that species such as the Nine Golden Rays develop loyal partnerships in order to protect the extremely vulnerable next generation from predators.

To effectively assess each fish's mental response to separation, researchers at the University of Burgundy in France trained females to open small crates on either side of the tank with their mouths. The University of Bouggendi is located in Dijon.

The "positive" box contains fish feed, while the "negative" box is empty. These boxes have black or white lids on their heads to help the fish distinguish between the differences.

The team then placed an "ambiguous" box with a gray lid in the middle of the tank to see how the female would react.

The researchers reasoned that an optimistic female would open the gray lid in the hope of a reward, while the pessimistic female would hesitate or ignore the box.

The study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, showed that when a female spends more time trying to open the grey lid when she stays in the tank with her favorite male.

Although the heart-wrenching story of the nine-partridge is heart-warming, the fish is not cute in appearance, they have sharp teeth, and there are signs that they have a strong regionality.
