The "love bird" crowned hornbill appeared in Longling, Yunnan

Kunming, 2 Jan (Xinhua) -- On the 2nd, a reporter learned from the Longling Little Black Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, that when the reserve and Mucheng Township of Longling County jointly carried out a wildlife survey recently, they photographed for the first time birds of the hornbill family. After the identification of Han Lianxian, professor of zoology at Southwest Forestry University, it was determined that it was a "love bird" crowned hornbill.

According to reports, the crowned hornbill likes to "travel" in pairs and live a "family-style" group life, once one of them "leaves", the other will "never marry again", so it is called "love bird".

Han Lianxian said that the crested hornbill has a narrow distribution area and a sparse population, and is mainly distributed in southwestern Guangxi, southern and central Yunnan and southeastern Tibet in China, mainly inhabiting evergreen broad-leaved forests and feeding on plant fruits and insects. Currently, the crested hornbill is listed as a near-threatened species (nt) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

It is reported that in recent years, Longling County has implemented ecological restoration projects such as returning farmland to forests, ecological public welfare forest protection, and voluntary tree planting, increasing the publicity of biodiversity conservation, and promoting the ecological restoration of ecologically fragile areas. The discovery of the crowned hornbill filled the gap in the hornbill family in Longling County, bringing the number of known wild bird animals in the county to 292 species. (End)
