Xu Xianyuan: Li Shutong took refuge in Buddhism in his later years because he wrote "Farewell", and died in the temple at the age of 51

author:Reporter Li Man

"The end of the sky, the corner of the earth, the knowledge of the half-drop, a pot of turbid wine to the end of the joy, tonight do not dream cold."

The sentence "Knowing the half-drop" in Li Shutong's "Farewell" is the background of his creation of this word. And the "acquaintance" here is Xu Xianyuan, one of the "Five Friends of Heaven" that Li Shutong still remembers after he left home.

The "Five Friends of Tianya" were Xu Xianyuan, Yuan Xilian, Zhang Xiaolou, Cai Xiaoxiang and Li Shutong, and this five-person group could be described as "famous for a while" in Shanghai at that time. It is said that at that time, people in Shanghai, as long as they mentioned the "Five Friends of Heaven", they all praised each other.

In that era, the "Five Friends of Heaven" were like stars.

The first gathering of the "Five Friends of Tianya" was in 1898, the year when Li Shutong first arrived in Shanghai. The biggest thing that happened in China that year was that Empress Dowager Cixi launched a coup d'état, the Hundred Days Restoration was declared a failure, and Li Shutong was forced to flee from his hometown of Tianjin to Shanghai because he was suspected of being a "Kangliang tongdang".

That year, Uncle Li, who was full of talent but did not make a big show, was 19 years old in the same year.

Li Shutong has always been particularly concerned about saving the country and saving the people, and his compassion for the people is stronger than that of ordinary people. This can be seen from the fact that he still supported the anti-Japanese resistance after his later renunciation.

According to relevant historical records, the reason why Li Shutong was implicated after the failure of the Hundred Days Restoration was because he had publicly said that "the old Chinese Empire cannot survive without changing the law", and he even carved a party seal on his own: "Nanhai Kangjun (Kang Youwei) is my master."

So why did Li Shutong choose Shanghai when he fled? The answer is: this place is very similar in every way to tianjin where he lived at that time, and more importantly, the Li family had a cabinet room in The Shenshengyu Qianzhuang in Shanghai, where he could have no worries about food and clothing.

After arriving in Shanghai, Uncle Li lived in the Bu neighborhood of the French Concession, which is today's Jinling East Road area. Nowadays, this place is mostly inhabited by ordinary people, but at that time, extraordinary dignitaries and dignitaries could not live in such places.

Because the Li family has a lot of industries in Shanghai and other places, Li Shutong can naturally live a rich life at will. On weekdays, his eating and living conditions are all at the level of a superior person.

Bu Neighborhood is close to the south of the city, and the south of the city is where the literati lived.

As early as a year before Li Shutong arrived in Shanghai, the remaining four of the later "Five Friends of Tianya", namely Yuan Xilian, the famous scholar of Baoshan at that time, Zhang Xiaolou, the Scholar of Jiangyin, Cai Xiaoxiang, a Confucian physician in Jiangwan, and Xu Xianyuan, the poet of Huating, had established the Chengnan Literary Society.

The Chengnan Literary Society is actually the residence of Xu Xiangyuan: Chengnan Caotang, as one of the leading figures in the Poetry and Literary Circles in Shanghai, Xu Xiangyuan will organize monthly gatherings of literati, and occasionally organize meetings and funding rewards for essays.

Li Shutong's initial contact with Xu Xianyuan and others was because of the essay. The reason for Uncle Li's submission to the Literary Society is still unknown, but the world today only knows that his several submissions have been unanimously praised by the insiders of the Literary Society, and soon, they officially invited him to join the Society.

At the end of 1898, Li Shutong went to the Seongnam Cultural Society for the first time to attend a class, on that day, he wore a velvet bowl hat, a white jade in the middle, wearing a satin robe, a curved waistcoat, a fat braid tied behind him, a ribbon tied to the bottom of the foot tube, and a double beam head thick-soled shoes. This exquisite dress, non-first-class male brother really can't learn it.

When Li Shutong stood in front of Xu Xianyuan and others, they only felt that he was heroic and powerful. And Uncle Li's look and demeanor between the conversations made them appreciate it even more. On that day, Xu Xianyuan and others had a feeling of seeing each other and hating him.

Li Shutong

Li Shutong's first meeting was written by Zhang Puyou, a Song Confucian sex science scholar at the time, and his title was: "Zhu Zi's learning comes from Yanping, and the purpose of the lord Jing is different from Yanping and different from Lianxi, try to evaluate it."

When Li Shutong was in Tianjin, he worked on the theory of sexuality, and such topics naturally did not bother him. For the first time, Li Shutong was rated by Zhang Puyou as" as "excellent in writing and ranked first".

After several contacts, Xu Xianyuan, who was overwhelmed by Uncle Li's style and talent, decided to set aside a part of his chengnan caotang and invited his family to move in.

At the turn of the spring and summer of the second year of Xu and Li acquaintances, Li Shutong really took his family to live in the Chengnan Caotang. Xu Xianyuan also specially hung a plaque of "Li Lu" in Li Shutong's study, and Li Shutong's later nickname of "Master of Li Lu" was derived from this.

After moving to Seongnam Caotang, Li Shutong was in a particularly good mood, and he once expressed his joy after meeting his confidant in "Qingping Le Zhi Xu Magic Garden".

The collision between the strong and the strong has never been precious, and since then, because several literary talents often exchange and learn together, their creative inspiration is getting stronger and stronger day by day.

During the one or two years of acquainting with the "Five Friends of Tianya", Li Shutong successively wrote "Li Lu Shi Zhong" in the Caotang in the south of the city, and the seal engraving "Li Lu Seal Spectrum" chronicle poetry collection "Xin Ugly Northern Expedition Tear Ink", etc. After these works were published, Li Shutong's reputation in Shanghai also grew.

Although Li Shutong and Xu Xianyuan have different growth backgrounds, they have a lot in common: they are also from a famous family, both love literature, like to read, drink, and visit famous mountains and rivers. Later, under the influence of Li Shutong, the other four people also slowly became interested in Buddhist culture.

Xu Xianyuan: Li Shutong took refuge in Buddhism in his later years because he wrote "Farewell", and died in the temple at the age of 51

In his spare time, Uncle Li likes poetry and singing the most, and Li Shutong also specially wrote a group of poems "Drama gift Cai Xiaoxiang" to Cai Xiaoxiang, one of the famous doctors of the "Five Friends of Heaven". Cai Xiaoxiang came from a family of traditional Chinese medicine, he specialized in gynecology, and wrote "Gynecology Essentials", "Women's Secret Notes", "Prescription Secret Records" and so on.

Because no one in the gynecological world in Shanghai can match, Cai Xiaoxiang's "business" is so good that it is explosive, and Uncle Li can't help but occasionally joke about him when he sees him, saying that he is "really envious of the blessed, and the waiter calls Mr." The meaning of this sentence, as the name suggests, is that Cai Xiaoxiang is surrounded by female patients all day long and calls "Sir", which is really beautiful and blessed.

In one of the poems "Drama gifting Cai Xiaoxiang", Li Shutong also bluntly said that Cai Xiaoxiang "is willing to take the elixir of life in heaven and heal the short-lived flowers in the world." ”

Whether Cai Xiaoxiang is really as Li Shutong said, "want to steal the elixir of immortality and heal the world's short-lived women", but Li Shutong is extremely close to him, and we have already glimpsed one or two from the poem.

It is said that Li Shutong's plays have been treasured by Cai Xiaoxiang, and he loves these semi-joking "singing and harmony".

Such "singing and harmony" is also often found by Li Shutong and Xu Xianyuan, Yuan Xilian, and Zhang Xiaolou, but because of the long time, these "singing and harmony" poems are scattered everywhere and disappear.

In addition to singing and singing, the most common thing Li Shutong and other friends in Tianya do is to discuss the method of saving the country and the people, they often get together to discuss current affairs, talk about excitement, and they will also chant poems on the spot.

It is also because of this heart of worrying about the country and the people that Uncle Li's poems are completely different from the poems of his contemporaries who simply express emotions. In the later period, with the slow manifestation of Buddhahood in Li Shutong's body, Xu Xianyuan and others were also infected, and they even began to play a role in writing to make up for deviations and save shortcomings, so that people's hearts turned from evil to good, which also laid the foundation for their later association with the Buddha.

People say that there is no unbroken feast in the world, and such a beautiful existence as the "Five Friends of Heaven" also has a day to disperse.

In 1901, Zhang Xiaolou, one of the "Five Friends of Tianya", was hired by the Eastern Literature Hall to go to Yangzhou. Soon after, Uncle Li entered the special class of Nanyang Public School, Xu Xianyuan began to work hard in the sea, and Yuan Xilian became an official...

The "Five Friends of Heaven" gradually disintegrated invisibly, but the impact of those years on all of them has always been there, and their friendship has not changed.

In a sense, the disintegration of the "Five Friends of Heaven" is the beginning of the turning point of the fate of the five people.

In just over a decade, all five of them have experienced various vicissitudes of life: Li Shutong has studied in many places, experienced the death of his mother and son, and then went to Japan to study alone; Xu Xianyuan's business has also gone through several twists and turns, during which he has experienced several life and death choices; Yuan Xilian has seen the deceit of the officialdom after becoming an official in Danyang; Cai Xiaoxiang, as a doctor, is often tormented by various diseases...

Cai Xiaoxiang co-founded the "Medical Newspaper"

In 1912, Cai Xiaoxiang, one of the "Five Friends of Tianya", died of illness at the age of 49. Since then, there have only been four "Tianya Five Friends" left. Cai Xiaoxiang's untimely death was a great blow to the other four friends, and Li Shutong did not enter the rice for several days in a row when he heard the news of his death, and later, he also wrote countless mourning poems to this confidant.

In 1913, a winter day after Cai Xiaoxiang's death, it snowed heavily in Shanghai, which set off the old Shanghai with great desolation. On that day, Li Shutong suddenly heard a familiar voice shouting at the door, and he and Miss Yezi went out to take a look: it was Xu Xiangyuan, a friend who had not been seen for a long time.

After seeing his friend, Uncle Li was naturally very happy in his heart, but just when he was about to invite him into the house, Xu Xianyuan suddenly jumped out of a sentence: "Uncle Brother, my family is bankrupt, we will have a period later!" After saying this, Xu Xianyuan turned around and stepped on the snow and left.

Xu Xianyuan still had something to say, but because he was afraid that Li Shutong would see his tears, he had to choke up and turn around.

The moment he heard those words, Li Shutong was completely stunned, and he was like five thunderbolts for a moment. He tried to stop him, but his throat could not make a sound, and he only watched his back slowly disappear into the snow.

That day, when Xu Xianyuan left, Uncle Li, who was standing in the snow, thought a lot, he thought about the scene where they used to write poems and paintings together, and he also thought of the scene when they first met, only at that moment did he clearly know that all that would never go back.

After returning to the house at the urging of Miss Ye Zi, Li Shutong's face was as solemn as frost. After a long time, he struggled to spit out the three words "play a song". Miss Ye Zi nodded slightly, then sat down and played the song, and when the song sounded, Li Shutong's tears finally poured down.

In the slightly poignant sound of the leaves, Li Shutong tearfully wrote down: "Outside the long pavilion, next to the ancient road, the grass is blue and the sky is blue... Ask the king when to go here, and when to come, don't linger" masterpiece.

"Farewell" track

After the creation, Li Shutong sat paralyzed in a chair, and he intuitively felt: "Prosperity will eventually end, like a dream without a trace." In his mind, he still had the back of Xu Xianyuan leaving on the snow, and the scene was really: "It's like a bird that has eaten all the birds and thrown into the forest, and the land that has fallen into a white expanse is really clean"...

The following spring, Li Shutong came to Shanghai for a vacation from Hangzhou, and when he passed the old site of the Caotang, he looked at the Caotang, which was already mostly deserted, and sighed with emotion. Xu Xianyuan asked him to write an inscription on the flower banner painted by his deceased wife Song Zhen, and Li Shutong wrote with a stroke of his pen:

"The one who has died does not do, the many hardships of the sad living, talk about the short, and mourn with the will."

After writing, Xu Xianyuan looked at these lines and felt infinite sadness rise in his heart.

Four years later, Li Shutong resolutely left home at the Hupao Temple in Hangzhou. When he left home, Xu Xianyuan and others did not know it. When the news reached Xu Xianyuan's ears, he was surprised and at the same time thought of writing a letter to persuade him to return to him. But after thinking about it again and again, after several times of lifting the pen, he still did not write.

In the following years, although the three friends of the "Five Friends of Tianya" except Li Shutong were all in the common dust, they were invariably more interested in Buddhism.

Yuan Xilian, the eldest of the Five Friends, served as a judicial officer in Hangzhou, Wuchang, Danyang and other places in Tianjin for many years after entering the army, and he was also the most deeply influenced by Li Shutong among the Five Friends.

According to historical records, Li Shutong recommended a copy of the Complete Book of Anshi to him before becoming a monk.

The Complete Book of Anshi was written by Zhou Anshi of the Qing Dynasty, and was strongly recommended by the senior monk yinguang of the Republic of China, and Li Shutong was probably influenced by master Yinguang and read this book.

In this book, Zhou Anshi talks about the importance of compassion in the way of side-by-side quotations, and throughout the book, Anshi is teaching people the principle of karma, and he even talks about how to do good in daily life.

Xu Xianyuan: Li Shutong took refuge in Buddhism in his later years because he wrote "Farewell", and died in the temple at the age of 51

The Complete Book of Ounces

Li Shutong's original intention at that time was: I hope that my friend can feel the power of compassion through this book, feel the impermanence of life and karma, and thus help him to try cases as a judge.

When he handed the book into Yuan Xilian's hands, Li Shutong also said a sentence, he said: "You were a monk in your previous life, and in this life you must remember to continue to practice and touch sentient beings with compassion." ”

Yuan Xilian has always been the best with Uncle Li, and he is naturally very easy to listen to what he says. After getting the book, he began to study day and night, and he quickly understood the harmony of the Dharma and the grandeur of the Buddha's power. At this time, after thinking about Li Shutong's words that day, he suddenly realized that studying Buddhism was already an urgent matter.

Therefore, shortly after Li Shutong left, Yuan Xilian actually set up a Buddhist hall in his official office. His subordinates were astonished to find that every morning their boss had begun to kneel and recite the Great Compassion.

It can be said that by this time, although Yuan Xilian was still in the common dust and an official in the official field, he had actually converted to Buddhism.

After starting to worship the Buddha, Yuan Xilian has always regarded Master Yin Guang as his teacher, and he has always used the Dharma to restrain his words and deeds. No matter where he served, every time he faced a case, he did his best to track down the truth. During this period, he even retried countless unjust, false and wrongly decided cases. After a long time, the locals called him "Big Blue Sky".

Can compassion really benefit the people? This is a difficult question for ordinary people to answer, but in history, Yuan Xilian seems to have really helped the people with compassion.

When Yuan Xilian came to Danyang to take office, there was a sudden fire in the city, because the fire was larger, and the well water was used dry. Faced with this situation, Yuan Xilian, who wanted to cry without tears, had to silently recite the Great Compassion Mantra against the fire in order to extinguish the fire. What is extremely miraculous is that after he silently recited the Great Compassion Mantra to the fire for about a quarter of an hour, because a building collapsed, the fire was extinguished in an instant...

After this incident, Yuan Xilian paid more attention to the Buddha. And the "Anshi Quanshu" that Li Shutong gave him, he has also carefully treasured. To him, the book was a rare treasure.

In the summer of 1926, Li Shu, a master who had been a monk for eight years, was passing through Shanghai, and while waiting for the ship, he visited the Caotang in seongnam again with an unspeakable feeling.

Master Hongyi saw many monks in the grass hall, and in a trance, he actually thought that he was hallucinating. At this time, the caotang was completely devoid of the old Xu Xianyuan that he had missed for a long time. Under careful questioning, I learned that the grass hall has already changed its owner, and the current owner of the grass hall is a hardware store owner. The reason why the grass hall has a monk chanting is because this grass hall has been given to the monk by the master.

Looking at the grass hall that had been renamed the Super Dust Elite House, all kinds of complicated emotions intertwined in Master Hongyi's heart.

The wind and objects near the Caotang in the south of the city have changed: the original small river ditch is gone, and a new road has been built at the original river ditch; and the Jindong Bridge has naturally disappeared, and even the willows have been cut down one by one.

In this way, how could master Hongyi not be born with the sadness that "things are not human beings".

After inquiring around, Master Hongyi found his former confidant Xu Fantasy Garden in a dilapidated small house on the side of the road near the grass hall. The two said goodbye, and in the blink of an eye it was fourteen years later.

When Master Hongyi appeared at the door of Xu Xiangyuan's house as a mage, Xu Xianyuan, whose hair was all white, was lying on the table in the burrow and scribbling something with a brush. When they looked up, after a few seconds of looking at each other, both of their eyes were filled with tears.

Looking at this white-haired and haggard Xu Xianyuan, the sadness in Master Hongyi's heart needless to say. When he knew that he was now half deaf and had been living by giving people some private lessons, Master Hongyi was even more impressed.

The two of them talked in that hut for a long time that day, and after recounting their respective current situations, Xu Xianyuan suddenly said, "Or are we happy at that time, do you remember that I often went to see you after you slept?" ”

Xu Xianyuan's words instantly pulled Master Hongyi back to twenty or thirty years ago, and the two people who broke their noses and laughed recounted the past dust, as if they were "idiots talking about dreams".

Xu Fanyuan and Master Hongyi

After leaving that hut, Master Koichi thought a lot on the ferry. He realized that although he had been a monk for nearly ten years, he still hadn't forgotten the past, and deep in his heart he even had a deep nostalgia. In particular, when he knew that his other friends were not doing well, the deeper he thought about them.

In the autumn of 1927, Master Hongyi traveled north to visit his relatives and passed through Shanghai, during which time he lived in the home of Feng Zikai, a disciple of Jiangwan.

After hearing the news, in addition to the deceased "Five Friends of Tianya" Cai Xiaoxiang, the other three friends, namely Xu Xianyuan, Yuan Xilian, and Zhang Xiaolou, went to visit. On that day, the four of them could not help but sigh. As we parted, it was proposed to take a reprieve. After the photo, Li Shutong, who was full of emotions, also wrote an inscription on the photo as a memorial.

Perhaps under the influence of Master Hongyi, after this meeting, Yuan Xilian and others also became more determined to take refuge in Buddhism.

On a rainy day shortly after the four of them met, Yuan Xilian saw a monk on the road kneeling down in front of him to ask for fare, and he was desperately kneeling down at that moment.

At this kneeling, all the passers-by suddenly stopped and watched: how could a superior man dressed in leather kneel down with a begging monk?

Yuan Xilian naturally had his own reason for doing so, and he felt that since he had converted to Buddhism, he was a layman. Never, only monks have accepted the prostrations of laymen, and they cannot do the opposite.

Like Yuan Xilian, Xu Xianyuan and Zhang Xiaolou also converted to Buddhism after that meeting and became laymen.

Only two years later, Master Hongyi returned to Shanghai, at this time Xu Xianyuan had passed away, Zhang Xiaolou went to Chongqing, and only Yuan Xilian remained in Shanghai.

At this point, the "Five Friends of Tianya" are scattered everywhere and have truly become "Tianya".

It is worth mentioning that Xu Xianyuan eventually died in the temple, and before he died, he repeatedly told his second wife, Su Qin, that he must cultivate his son to be a serious person like Li Shutong, and let him learn art like Li Shutong when he grows up. In the year of his death, Xu Xianyuan was 51 years old.

Knowing that on the day of Xu Xianyuan's death, Master Hongyi was as usual, but when he lay down at night, he suddenly recited the poems he had created when they first met, and when he recited them, Hongyi always had tears in his eyes...

Of the five friends, the latest to die was Zhang Xiaolou, who was as proficient as Li Shutong in Confucianism and calligraphy and painting. After returning to Japan after graduating from the University of Law, he successively served as a teacher at the Jiangnan Higher School in Nanjing, the Liangjiang Excellent Normal School, the translator of the Beiyang government, and the compiler of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the past, when the "Five Friends of Tianya" initiated the establishment of the "Calligraphy and Painting Trade Union" in Shanghai, the president was Zhang Xiaolou, who was first-class in organization and management. After taking refuge in Buddhism, he called himself a dust settler.

Like Xu Xianyuan and Yuan Xilian, Zhang Xiaolou's initial ambition to save the country was to become an official. However, because he did not know the way of being an official like Xu Xianyuan, he eventually lost his official like his old friend. After losing his official position, he was poor and destitute, and had to rely on selling calligraphy and paintings and borrowing money from relatives and friends.

Later, Zhang Xiaolou went to teach at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts presided over by Liu Haisu.

Zhang Xiaolou had thin heirs in his life, and he had only one daughter named Zhang Manjun. In 1928, Zhang Manjun married Li Gongpu, a revolutionary who was about to study in the United States.

Xu Xianyuan: Li Shutong took refuge in Buddhism in his later years because he wrote "Farewell", and died in the temple at the age of 51

Li Gongpu and Zhang Manjun wedding photos

Li Gongpu and Zhang Xiaolou are as dedicated to saving the country, such a son-in-law, Zhang Xiaolou is naturally very satisfied. After Li Gongpu returned to China, Weng and his son-in-law also cooperated to establish a circulation library, an amateur cram school, and a semi-monthly magazine "Reading Life".

With the help of his son-in-law, Zhang Xiaolou's life has finally gradually stabilized. Among the "Five Friends of Tianya", he is the only one who can concentrate on painting and painting and open a painting exhibition.

Unfortunately, Zhang Xiaolou's leisurely life was finally broken after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War. In the face of the atrocities of the Japanese invaders, Zhang Xiaolou indignantly drew a crab with limbs, and he also drew a bright red plum above the painting. The two sentences on the drawing paper are:

"Crab legs are short, see how long you run rampant?" In my travels, I have learned only the red plum and the purity. ”

This painting is undoubtedly a satire on the Japanese invaders, and satirizes that their rampantness in China will not last. Subsequently, Zhang Xiaolou resolutely threw himself into the great cause of resisting Japan and saving the dead, while doing charity to relieve refugees, he wrote articles denouncing the crimes of the Japanese.

Almost at the same time, when Zhang Xiaolou was actively resisting Japan, his good friend Master Hongyi also joined the anti-Japanese team as a monk.

At the risk of being assassinated by the Japanese, Master Koichi opened the altar to preach the scriptures under artillery fire, and he shouted out the slogan "Remembering the Buddha does not forget to save the country, and to save the country, we must recite the Buddha." He even wrote a banner with the words "martyrdom" in awe to clarify his aspirations. The inscription on the left side of this banner reads:

"How can we resign from giving up our lives to protect the Buddha's gate and where the great righteousness lies? ”

Xu Xianyuan: Li Shutong took refuge in Buddhism in his later years because he wrote "Farewell", and died in the temple at the age of 51

In addition, there are many more efforts made by Master Hongyi to resist japan. At the height of the War of Resistance, Master Hongyi even organized monks to set up the "Jinjiang County Buddhist Wartime Ambulance Team." This life-saving and wounded rescue team composed of monks carried out the wartime rescue work vigorously.

During this time, master Hongyi's actions naturally greatly encouraged Zhang Xiaolou, and on the other side, Yuan Xilian, who was in Shanghai, also actively joined the anti-Japanese resistance. Since then, the only three remaining members of the "Five Friends of Heaven" have stood together again.

In June 1938, in order to prevent the Japanese attack, the Kuomintang blew up the levee at the mouth of the Yellow River Garden, and millions of people left their homes and became refugees.

Zhang Xiaolou was worried after hearing about the situation of the local refugees, and then he rushed to Zhengzhou at the first time and organized local anti-Japanese compatriots and laymen to rescue the Yellow River flood disaster.

Soon, in order to resettle the victims of Henan, he resolutely went to the Huanglong Mountain in Shaanxi Province to avoid the difficulties of the victims. While he was helping the refugees through the difficulties, his beloved wife died in shock during the bombing of Chongqing by Japanese planes.

People say that "the world has a double and complete law, and it is not worthy of the Qing", Zhang Xiaolou finally sacrificed his beloved wife for the people of Li Min. This choice of his is almost the same as That of Uncle Li, who resolutely abandoned his wife and renounced his family for the sake of Pudu sentient beings.

From this point of view, Zhang Xiaolou and Uncle Li are really the same destination.

On October 13, 1942, Master Hongyi, who had always insisted on resisting Japan, died in the Evening Qing Room in Quanzhou at the age of 62. After the news of Master Hongyi's death reached Zhang Xiaolou's ear, he wrote many mourning poems in grief.

What Zhang Xiaolou did not expect was that less than four years after the death of Master Hongyi, his son-in-law, Li Gongpu, a patriotic democrat, was assassinated by Kuomintang agents. The blow of the death of his friend and son-in-law made him devastated from then on.

After Li Gongpu's death, Zhang Xiaolou's life became more and more difficult. After returning to Shanghai, he had to rely on a small pension from the Sanlian Bookstore to the families of the martyrs.

Fortunately, the new China that Zhang Xiaolou's son-in-law had in mind was finally established. Looking at this new era in which the people are the masters of their own affairs, Zhang Xiaolou is full of sorrow and joy. On the day of giving incense to his son-in-law and Master Hongyi and announcing the good news, Zhang Xiaolou sat alone for a long time. After a long time, he muttered, "It's time for us to meet too." ”

Five friends of the end of the world

In December 1959, less than a month after the death of Yuan Xilian in the "Five Friends of Tianya", Zhang Xiaolou died in Shanghai due to stomach bleeding at the age of 74.

Since then, the "Five Friends of Tianya" have finally gathered again under the Nine Springs.

I think that these five independent-minded, literary friends who are full of compassion and patriotism and love for the people will certainly be able to chant and paint together again.
