First of all, it should be clear that Stephen Chow was already popular in Taiwan in 1990 with "Gamble Saint" (at that time, the main market of Hong Kong films was still in Taiwan), and the dubbing of "Gamble Saint" was not Shi Banyu, who was just an unknown voice actor at that time. His voice is sharp, impure, not a good voice actor embryo, usually not a bad guy, or a eunuch, lacking representative characters.
It was not until the beginning of "Gambler" that Shi Banyu began to become the royal voice of Stephen Chow, and his exaggerated tone and Stephen Chow's performance style unexpectedly matched.

But if Zhou Xingchi's early bias toward comic-style funny performances is still complementary to Shi Banyu's sharp and exaggerated voice. That Zhou Xingchi's performance in the later film was more deep and introverted, the sense of tragic fatalism was stronger, and Shi Banyu's voice was obviously not suitable. However, in the case that Chinese the audience has preconceived notions, changing the dubbing is undoubtedly a certain risk, so Shi Banyu continues to voice Zhou Xingchi.
However, it can be clearly felt that in the later films of Zhou Xingchi, such as "The King of Comedy", "Shaolin Football", "Kung Fu" and "Yangtze River Seven", Shi Banyu's voice is getting stronger and stronger. And if you compare the Cantonese version, you can find that the gap between Shi Banyu's lines and Zhou Xingchi himself is still relatively obvious, the original voice of Zhou Xingchi himself is more low and muffled, and Shi Banyu's too outward and exaggerated, often do not know how to "receive".
At the same time, there are also many Hong Kong film lovers who are more inclined to Cantonese soundtracks do not understand, why do you watch English and even Japanese, Korean, Thai and other small languages that cannot be understood can listen to the original voice and watch subtitles, when you encounter Cantonese, which is a dialect of its own country, it is not so inclusive, you must watch the Chinese version, but also the mythical Chinese dubbing the so-called "bonus"? After all, no matter how good the dubbing is, it cannot completely restore the mood and state of the scene, let alone for a top actor like Stephen Chow.
Therefore, many people believe that without Shi Banyu, it will not affect Zhou Xingchi to become the king of comedy, and at most it may lose a small part of the audience Chinese. However, considering the "preconceived" factor, another royal voice actor may not be worse than Shi Banyu. After all, everyone mainly watches Stephen Chow's performance rather than dubbing.
On the other hand, it is precisely because of dubbing Stephen Chow that Shi Banyu can get such a high degree of attention and become the "top stream" in the dubbing industry, after all, not many people will pay attention to who the royal voice of other Hong Kong stars is.
In other words, opportunity is very important, it is undeniable that Shi Banyu is an excellent voice actor, but subject to the innate voice conditions and the overall environment in which the voice actor is not valued, without Zhou Xingchi, Shi Banyu may just be an obscure voice actor.
