Biography

Early life

Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, the seventh child in the family. His father, Joseph, married Catherine in 1949, came from a family of Lutheran priests in Arkansas, loved music, played electric guitar, and often played in a band called "Ferkenth" to earn some extra income to support the family's huge living expenses. Mother Catherine could play the piano and the clarinet. [1]

In 1963, at the age of 5, Jackson began to show his talent in singing and dancing.

Jackson's relationship with his father had always been poor, so much so that he did not like his father since he was a child. Michael once said that his father had never played games with him, never had his back on him, and had been abused as a child, so the father-son relationship was extremely distant. [2] In 1993, in an interview with Wimprey, the host of a black-American talk show, Jackson publicly revealed for the first time about his father's abuse of him as a child. He recalls that there were only two or three hours of study time a day, and all the rest of the time was rehearsed in the studio, until before going to bed. Jackson remembers his father often sitting in a chair with a belt in his hand. [3]

In the mid-1960s, Jackson and four older brothers formed the Jackson Brothers Under the organization of their father, a group featuring Michael. [4]

In 1968, Jackson's band released their first album, Big Boy, in collaboration with a local record label, Steeltown.

In 1969, Jackson's family moved to Los Angeles. Jackson's solo debut single, "I Want You Back," topped the charts.

On August 10, 1979, Jackson released his debut solo album Off the Wall, which transformed him from an up-and-coming child star into a groundbreaking artist. It was also Michael's first collaboration with album producer Quincy Jones. [5]

Beginning in November 1972, the Jackson brothers began an international tour, including London, West Germany, Italy, France, India, Japan, Australia, and Africa. Michael released 4 solo albums on Motown Records.

Jackson was interviewed in 1980 and said that he was very dissatisfied with the Thriller album, criticizing the poor arrangement and receiving all the strange songs, and when he first heard the whole album, he was disappointed and tearful, and asked the record company not to release it. Jackson said he once wanted to smash the master tape, and friends advised him to go out for a walk, when he rode a bicycle past an elementary school, watched the children play, and decided to return to the studio and change all the arrangements. [9]

Character evaluation

Michael Jackson's artistry includes not only music, but also dance, costumes, makeup designs, stage lighting and fireworks, and a complete entertainment program (Cheng Xiaohong's review). [3]

Michael Jackson is not limited to music, his creativity in dance is also excellent. He has "robot" dance steps and the famous "space step". His dance movements (such as touching the lower body with his hands) also struck the boundaries of the moral standards of secular culture in society, and were attacked by so-called orthodox people as "obscene". And it was these bold and challenging dance moves that influenced the pop stage for generations to come (Cheng Xiaohong's review). [3]

When Thriller was released in 1981, Time magazine described Michael Jackson as "the savior who saved the recording industry, the composer who defined the musical trends of an era, the dancer with incredible feet, the singer who broke all the boundaries of preference, style and race." [29]

Michael's songs either show dreams, or inspire potential, or debunk lies, or denounce "darkness", and deep in his heart, there is a power that desires "equality" (Xinhuanet Review). [30]

Michael Jackson's musical contributions also include contributions to the black race, American society and culture (Cheng Xiaohong's review). [3]

Character controversy

Skin tone changes

In the lyrics to the song "Black or White," Michael Jackson writes, "I don't want to, just spend my life as a person of color." He was also controversial. [3]

Jackson imitated Chaplin

An old photograph jackson took in the 1980s imitating Chaplin attests to the fact that he already had significant vitiligo symptoms on his face at that time [31]. In 1986 Michael was diagnosed with vitiligo. But under the hype of the media, there was almost unanimous speculation that Michael had undergone skin bleaching or skin grafting [32]. Jackson himself publicly explained in 1993 that he had skin disorders, impaired skin pigmentation, a genetic disorder in the family. Due to the large loss of melanin, in order to prevent skin sunburn, Jackson always wrapped himself tightly every time he went out [31].

In 1999, Michael was admitted to The Renos Hills Hospital in New York for treatment due to overwork and dehydration. Dr. LenHorovitz, who was in charge of treating Michael at the time, said Michael suffered from vitiligo and that years of illness had caused his skin to turn white. Dr. LenHorovitz admitted to treating Michael several times before he was admitted to the hospital in New York, but he did nothing to make Michael's skin whiter [32].

On May 6, 2013, Jackson's coroner Christopher Rogers testified in court, and Rogers pointed out in his autopsy report that Jackson had crossed the lip and eyebrow lines and the forehead line, apparently to make the wig look more natural. The autopsy confirmed what Jackson said to those who questioned his skin color becoming lighter in the 1980s. Rogers said Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a skin disease that resulted in a light and dark complexion [33].

Jackson appeared in 2003 for pedophilia [34]

In September 1993, a 12-year-old boy publicly accused Jackson of sexual assault, which Jackson always denied, and the two sides reached an out-of-court settlement in January of the following year, but by this time public opinion had seriously damaged Jackson's image and his career had fallen into a low ebb [31].

In 2003, another boy accused Jackson of "indecently assaulting" him. On April 22, 2004, Jackson was charged with 10 major counts, including conspiracy and child molestation. After more than a year of investigative evidence gathering, in June 2005, all charges against Michael Jackson were found "not guilty" [31]. Jackson then moved out of the United States and has not been in the Dream Manor since. Jackson stated that in order to avoid making himself more hated by the public, he would not have any more intimate acts with his children in the future [31].

On June 26, 2009, the truth of the pedophile case came out, and the protagonist of the incident, Jordy Chandler, made a statement in his blog that he could no longer continue to lie after learning of Michael Jackson's death, apologizing to Michael Jackson. He confessed that the allegations were fabricated, that he had lied for the sake of his father, who had created the hoax in order to escape his life in poverty, and then Jordan Chandler's father swallowed himself at a gun.
