It is often said that "Riva River, love is in China Normal University", so what is the Riva River? In fact, it was indeed a river, but now it has become a lake. The newly published 219-page Atlas of East China Normal University reveals the historical and geographical changes of the "Two Rivers Valley" university over the past 70 years, and also explores the close relationship between a higher education institution and the "one river and one river" in Shanghai Beach.

The second degree of site selection, from the Suzhou River to the Huangpu River Bay
Hu Huanyong, a geographer named after him, named the "Hu Huanyong Line," began working at East China Normal University in 1953 until his retirement, often saying that "without a map, there is no geography." The new atlas consists of 6 chapters and 19 chapters, of which the fifth article carries the traditional campus physical space, but it is not only a "campus map", nor is it limited to depicting the campus geography of the two-dimensional plane. Because of the characteristics and comprehensive advantages of the whole school, Academician Qian Xuhong, the president, believes that "this is not an atlas in the traditional sense".
At the beginning of its establishment, East China Normal University chose Shanghai as a school from the former site of Daxia University, and gradually expanded into the current Putuo Campus (North Zhongshan Road Campus). The former site of Daxia University is adjacent to Suzhou Creek in the south and Zhongshan (North) Road in the east, and experts in the atlas compilation believe that running a school here has many advantages: First, Zhongshan Road is the main north-south road in western Shanghai, which provided a more convenient external passage for the school after its expansion in the 1950s; second, it is adjacent to Suzhou Creek in the south and is connected with the "School River" Riva River, and the beautiful environment injects the spiritual energy of the school into the cultural context of the school; third, the former site of Daxia University covers an area of nearly 300 acres, and the school building is magnificent and the facilities are more complete, which can be used; fourth Although the school site was inconvenient to be located in the suburbs at that time, the surrounding space was relatively easy to expand, and finally formed a pattern of more than 860 acres today, providing sufficient space for the development of the school in the first 50 years.
In 2002, East China Normal University launched the construction of the Minhang Campus, and the site was selected to the first bay of the Huangpu River, where the second "school river" Cherry River meandered into the Huangpu River. After nearly 20 years of hard work, more than 1,700 acres of campus have rapidly transformed in the "three-district linkage", and the shadow of the early "Min Dahuang" has long been invisible, and it also provides a space guarantee for the school's development goal of building a world-class university in another 50 years.
It can be said that looking at the two campus sites of East China Normal University, it seems that it is inseparable from the keywords of "suburb" and "linshui". The Putuo campus 70 years ago has long been transformed from a "suburb" to a downtown area of Shanghai, and the Minhang campus 20 years ago has also moved from a "suburb" to the main urban area in Shanghai's 2035 plan; the new and old campus born of "Linshui" is also connected with the blood of shanghai's two mother rivers, from the Suzhou River to the Huangpu River Bay, integrated into the grand blueprint of building a world-class waterfront area with global influence, full of poetry and humanistic care.
By extension, the development and change of the location of Shanghai's university pattern is closely related to the development of the city. Since the 1990s, Shanghai has entered the stage of suburban development of urban and population, and with the adjustment and expansion of colleges and universities, the "suburbanization" of universities came into being at the turn of the century. In the suburbs of Shanghai, in addition to the typical area of Songjiang University Town, Fengxian, Nanhui and Lingang have also formed certain university agglomeration areas. East China Normal University chose to build a new campus in Minhang adjacent to the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and jointly formed a new pattern of integration and linkage development of the three districts of "Campus-Park-Urban Area" with the surrounding Zizhu High-tech Zone and Wujing-Jiangchuan Community.
In the past ten years, under the strategic background of the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and the construction of five new cities in Shanghai, East China Normal University has once again conformed to the development law of the metropolitan area and opened a new spatial layout of chongming ecological research institute, Lingang research institute and Suzhou research institute. As a result, the relationship between the "two river basins" of East China Normal University and the "one river and one river" pattern in Shanghai seems to be suddenly enlightened.
Two "school rivers", the new is more senior than the old
The Jiefang Daily Shangguan News reporter learned that East China Normal University began on October 16, 1951, tracing its origins, and the foundation of the school was Daxia University founded in 1924 and Guanghua University, which was founded in 1925, as well as some departments and departments of other colleges and universities, including the School of Science and the Department of Education of St. John's University in Shanghai, which was founded in 1879.
Along the water, the original name of the Riva River is actually "Great XiaXi River". On March 4, 1931, both the Shanghai "Declaration" and the "Current Affairs New Daily" had a news item "Rong Zongjing donated the Great Xia Xihe". Its record: "Zhongshan Road Daxia University new site west, there is a river, from the north of the school, flowing through the sports field and Riva Lida Village to Suzhou Creek, an area of more than 60 acres, the water depth of the bank is wide, clear to the bottom, swimming scales and fine algae, direct vision, the shore is hanging on the yang, the reflection is interesting, the scenery is excellent, and it is the only one on the sea." The river was originally the property of The Rongzong Jing clan, a giant flour merchant in Wuxi, and is now donated by the Rong clan to Bactria. Since the school obtained this river, it has been dredged for recreational fishing, rafting and swimming. ”
Yes, "Villa Rio Rita" is actually a "villa area". Interestingly, in the eighteenth chapter of Mao Dun's "Midnight", it is written that a group of young men and women took a taxi to the village of Riva Lida for an outing, rented a small boat through the river, and the weeping willow branches fluttered in the wind... Later, they returned home early due to a thunderstorm, talked about the outing at home, and mentioned the scene of "Rio" 4 times.
"Riva" is so beautiful in non-fiction or fictional works. Because the Great Xia West River flows south from Da Xia University, flows through the public channel next to the village of Riva Lida and then flows into the Suzhou River, over time the Great Xia Xi River is called the Riva Lida River, referred to as the "Riva River". Today, the "Riva River" in the old campus of East China Normal University is a self-contained lake connected by multiple bridges. The map shows that an underground passage is left to connect with the Su River.
Perhaps even less well known, in terms of its "school river" qualifications, the Cherry River associated with the Pujiang River at the Minhang Campus of East China Normal University has a long history. The Cherry River was formerly known as Yingdou Lake, and in the Ming Dynasty, the "Nine Elders of Yingdou" once met in the forest on the shore of Yingdou Lake to chant poems. She echoes the Riva River in the North Central Campus and shares a cultural vein.
"The atlas breaks through the traditional way of organizing elements, innovates multiple visual expression forms, and achieves a very tense picture reading experience." Zhou Chenghu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, commented on the atlas: "In the form of a map, it tells the history and modern style of a university with a long history and a reputation at home and abroad. Tell the story of East China Normal University well, tell the story of Chinese universities well..."
