On September 4, 1953, the Shanghai Film Actors Troupe was officially established. When the regiment was founded, it was located on Tongren Road, Nanjing West Road, Shanghai, and then moved to 1498 Wuding Road. The first regimental commander was Zhang Wang, and the deputy regimental commander was Jin Yan, Tang Huada, and Liu Qiong.

When the Shangying Actors Troupe was established, the cast was very large, with a total of 112 actors. It is roughly composed of two parts, most of which are film stars who have been active in the film industry since before liberation, such as Jin Yan, Zhao Dan, Bai Yang, Zhang Ruifang, Sun Daolin, Shangguan Yunzhu, Liu Qiong, Wei Heling, Qin Yi, Shu Xiuwen, Feng Zhe, etc., while the other part is transferred from the army, including Tang Huada, Zhong Xinghuo, Bugari, Feng Xiao and others. 1957 was a special year. In January of that year, Shanghai Film Studio established the Shanghai Film Actors Amateur Theater Troupe, and elected the second group leader, Jin Yan, with the deputy leaders being Tang Huada, Liu Qiong, Wu Chaowei, and the secretary of the party branch, Bai Li. The dedicated performance theater is the Yangtze River Theater, and many actors such as Zhou Zhiqing have been recruited from the Shanghai Municipal Federation of Trade Unions literary troupe into the troupe.

On October 6, 1957, Shanghai Film Studio was transformed into Shanghai Film Production Company, which had three film studios under its jurisdiction: Haiyan, Jiangnan and Tianma. On August 8, 1960, Tianma Factory adjusted its organization and established an actors troupe, with Bai Yang as the leader and Jin Naihua and Mu Hong as the deputy leaders. In April 1961, the actors of the Tianma Factory and the Haiyan Factory merged to form a new actors troupe, including 108 actors, directly under the leadership of the Film Bureau. Bai Yang became the third head of the Shangying Actors Troupe, and the deputy head of the troupe was Zhang Ruifang, Sun Daolin, Wei Heling, and Ke Gang (who was also the secretary of the party branch). Later, Bugari served as secretary of the party branch and deputy head of the regiment.

In 1966, a movement began, all the film crews stopped filming, and the actors returned to the factory to participate in various criticism meetings. In the stormy days, many former stars died by suicide. In November 1969, the actors entered the Fengxian County Cadre School in Shanghai to study and work. It took two years before returning to the factory. However, in 1972, many actors were assigned to factories to participate in "war heat" labor. The actors' troupe is basically in a state of disintegration.

It was not until 1973 that the actor troupe was re-established, with Iron Bull as its leader (and secretary of the party branch), and the other responsible persons were Su Wei, Zhi Shiming, and Wang Jing'an. In 1974, the actors troupe moved to 41 Damuqiao Road. At the end of 1974, in order to strengthen the cast, under the proposal of Zhang Ruifang, Iron Bull and other leaders, an actor training class was held, and 24 young people, Chen Chong, Wang Weiping, Chen Hongmei, Xue Guoping, were recruited. Many of them later became the brightest stars in The Chinese film industry in the 80s.
