"Not for the sake of a family, but for three generations of heroes." 60 years ago, the family of Xu Xingke, a collector, adhered to his legacy and donated all 100,000 ancient books and more than 7,000 cultural relics collected by Xu Lao in his lifetime to the Hubei Provincial Library and the Hubei Provincial Museum.
On June 28th, the 60th anniversary exhibition of Xu Xingke's donation of ancient books and cultural relics was launched in Hubei Provincial Library, with an exhibition lasting 3 days, exhibiting a total of about 52 ancient books and cultural relics donated by Xu Xingke, and many national first-class cultural relics participated in the joint exhibition for the first time. After a while, these ancient books and cultural relics still shine with academic light, benefiting thousands of students.
"More than 1,000 boxes of nearly 100,000 copies" were donated
"Do not leave behind the descendants of goods and wealth, the Hugh of the ancients." Books are not goods, but self-made private into public. As soon as you step into the 60th anniversary exhibition hall of Xu Xingke's donation of ancient books and cultural relics located on the 5th floor of the provincial map, what catches the audience's eyes is this proverb left by Xu Lao before his death.
Xu Xingke (1890-1959) was a native of Wuchang, Hubei Province. He studied in Japan in his early years, and "loved books, read books, visited books, collected books, protected books, and dedicated books" throughout his life. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Xu Xingke sent tens of thousands of ancient books from Wuchang to Hankou in spite of his body, swore to coexist with ancient books under cannon fire, and refused to take up a false post, reflecting national integrity and style.
In 1959, Xu Xingke unfortunately died of illness, and from 1959 to 1961, the Hubei Provincial Library accepted donations from Xu's children and the Xu's collection transferred from other libraries, "with more than 1,000 boxes and nearly 100,000 volumes", including many Ming and Qing dynasty rare books, manuscripts, manuscripts, and approved school books. Among Xu's collections, cultural relics such as the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, gold and stone rubbings, bronze mirrors, sword coins, tiles, seals, seals, and Tuoben stele were donated to the Hubei Provincial Museum.
The number of essences donated by Elder Xu is so large that it is rare in the world, and there are 54 pieces of first-class products alone. The calligraphy and painting contain a large number of famous art treasures, and there are 50 pieces of Qianlong (including) Tuobenda in the Golden Stone Stele, including 30 Tuoben in the Ming Dynasty and 2 Tuoben in the Song Dynasty. Among Xu's donations, the Qing Dynasty and Qing Scholars studied texts, rhymes, exhortations, golden stones, catalogs, and the works of the Hundred Classics of History, which were relatively systematic and complete, and this was also the biggest feature of Xu Xingke's collection.
According to reports, many ancient books donated by Xu Lao have been selected into the "National Precious Ancient Books Directory", which has made great contributions to the history of Hubei literature and even the history of Chinese literature. The three generations of Xu's century-old relay of "not leaving behind their descendants with goods and wealth" and "turning the orphaned classics into millions of bodies to benefit scholars in the world" is even more interpreted as a centenary of this book.
Fang Qin, director of the Hubei Provincial Museum, told Jimu News that Elder Xu donated the ancient books and cultural relics he had collected all his life free of charge, which was extremely respectable. It is reported that the more than 7,000 cultural relics donated by Xu Xingke are the largest personal donations received by the Hubei Provincial Museum, and it is also the most eye-catching among the non-excavated cultural relics collected by the museum. Fang Qin revealed that the new museum of the third phase of the provincial bo has set up a special Xu Xingke Museum, "Mr. Xu Xingke has turned his private collection into a national collection, which is the importance of our cultural relics and the respect for our history and culture, and we have set up this special museum to call on more people to learn from his spirit." ”

This exhibition is the first time that hubei provincial library and hubei provincial museum jointly exhibit xu xingke donated ancient books and cultural relics, about 52 pieces of exhibits, there are scrolls, albums, fans, codexes and other types, including Ji Xiaolan's annotation of "Shi TongXun Supplement", Song Tuoben's "Lushan Temple Stele", Kangxi Tuoben's "Li Sixun Stele", Southern Song Dynasty Tuoben's "Clarification Hall Post", etc. It can be said that every exhibit in the exhibition hall is the "white moonlight" in the hearts of ancient book and cultural relics enthusiasts.
The Jimu News reporter noticed that a brightly engraved "Yellow Crane Tower Collection" in the exhibition hall attracted many people to stop and watch. In the 1980s, on the eve of the reconstruction of the Yellow Crane Tower, the restoration designers struggled with nowhere to trace the context of the Yellow Crane, so they had to ask Xu Xiaomi, xu Xingke's fifth son and then deputy director of the Hubei Provincial Library. Soon, Xu Xiaomi found the only ming-engraved "Yellow Crane Tower Collection" in Xu's collection.
This is the first ancient book in history to specifically record the poetry of the Yellow Crane Tower, and the poems in the book have high artistic value from the Southern Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, providing a large number of precious historical evidence for the reconstruction of the Yellow Crane Tower. During this exhibition, the audience can get a close look at this precious "Yellow Crane Tower Collection".
The famous historian Feng Tianyu was also one of the first audiences to see the exhibition. In an interview with reporters, he said that when he was a teenager, he loved to "live" in the library, which was his spiritual home, and many of the books he read at that time were the collections of Mr. Xu Xingke, "Mr. Xu is one of the most outstanding bibliophiles in China, and his spirit of governance, dedication to cultural inheritance, and the spirit of the Xu family's collection, donation and dedication to scholarship have a subtle impact on me." ”
According to Liu Weicheng, director of the Hubei Provincial Library, the library is working on the compilation of Xu Xingke's Collected Works, "hoping to systematically organize his annotations, correspondence and articles he has written, so that everyone can better understand the context of Mr. Xu's academic research." Director Liu said that Hubei, as the birthplace of Jingchu culture, has a large number of ancient books, which are the precious heritage of Jingchu culture, and it is of great significance to protect, study and make good use of precious documents.
