2022 Graduate Program Admissions Season

Applications for the 2022 Tianjin Juilliard Graduate Program are now open! In November, Tianjin Julia will host five online master classes featuring The Shanghai Quartet's first violin Li Weigang, the second violin Yu Xiang, viola Li Honggang, cellist Nicholas Tzavaras, and Sergey Tyutekin, a new trumpet teacher who has joined the Tianjin Juilliard family.
The online masterclass series opens up two ways to participate: performers and observers. Performers can play in the master class and receive guidance from the teacher, and registration is only open to applicants who are interested in applying for the Juilliard Tianjin Graduate Program in the near future, while observers can observe the master class and participate in questions and discussions, which is open to all. Interested participants can scan the QR code of the corresponding activity and the corresponding method below to register, the number of places is limited, it is recommended that you register as soon as possible.
Li Honggang viola master class

Violaist Li Honggang is one of the founding members of the Shanghai Quartet. In the 36 years since its establishment, the Shanghai Quartet has performed nearly 3,000 concerts, traveled to 30 countries and regions, and recorded more than 35 records. Honggang Li is a resident artist at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University in New Jersey and a resident artist at Richmond University in Virginia from 1989 to 2003. In addition, he is a visiting professor at the Central Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and has been the Guest Viola Principal of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra since 2009.

Nicholas Savaras Cello Master Class

Cellist Nicholas Savaras has travelled the globe as a chamber musician, soloist and educator, performing in around 1,600 concerts around the world. He joined the Shanghai Quartet in 2000 and was a guest cellist with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Savalas recorded more than 27 records, including a full set of Beethoven string quartets. Savaras is an artist-in-residence at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University in New Jersey. He joined Tianjin Juilliard School in the fall of 2020 as a resident teacher of cello.

Yu Xiang violin master class

Violinist Yu Xiang won the 2010 Menuine International Violin Competition and won the Bach Performance Award and the Audience Favorite Award. In 2019, he won the prestigious Avery Fisher Professional Award in music, becoming the first Chinese mainland violinist to receive the award in the 43-year history of the award. He has recently performed as a soloist with more than 70 world-renowned symphony orchestras, and his solo concert footprint spans the world. Yu Xiang is also an acclaimed chamber musician and educator. In 2017, he was invited to join the prestigious Lincoln Center Chamber Music Association and became the youngest member of the Shanghai Quartet in the summer of 2020. Xiang Yu has taught at the New England Conservatory of Music, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Montclair State University, and is currently a resident teacher at The Juilliard School in Tianjin.

Li Weigang violin master class

Born into a musical family in Shanghai, Li Weigang began studying violin at the age of 5 and attended the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of Northern Illinois and the Juilliard School in New York. Li Weigang is a violin and chamber music teacher at The Juilliard School in Tianjin, teaches at Montclair State University and the Bard School of Music, and is a guest principal of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Li Weigang is the first violinist of the world-famous Shanghai Quartet, which has toured more than 3,000 times worldwide since 1983 and recorded more than 30 records. His story was recorded in the 1980 Academy Award documentary From Mao Zedong to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China.

Sergey P. Tuttkin Trumpet Master Class

Sergei Tutkin graduated from the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow with a master's degree in acting and education. He is a professional trumpeter with 20 years of professional experience. He has served as principal trumpeter of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and has worked in the trumpet department of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Notable conductors who worked with him included Ricardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gennadi Rozhdiestevinsky, Kurt Mazur and Van Zhiden. In 2014, he became a founding faculty member at the Shanghai Academy of Bands. While in Singapore, he was a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. He has also been invited to be the Principal of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Tuttkin is a long-standing active member of the Moscow Brass Quintet named after Timoffi Doksice.
