As a fellow hero, why was Chen Ping able to occupy a high position without falling, while Zhou Bo was repeatedly suppressed by Emperor Wen of Han?

author:Kankot on history

Chen Ping was not only the first-class master of strategy on the battlefield of Chu and Han, but also a very intelligent survival master in the early Han Dynasty. In contrast, Zhou Bo, who has a strong personality and little power to strategize, is a bit less interesting.

As a fellow hero, why was Chen Ping able to occupy a high position without falling, while Zhou Bo was repeatedly suppressed by Emperor Wen of Han?

When it comes to Zhou Bo's repeated suppression after Emperor Wen of Han ascended the throne, but Chen Ping held a high position and did not fall, the key lies in one point: the wise man knows the way to advance and retreat when he is high, while Mangfu is confused by the glory of power and is extremely easy to get carried away.

In his early years, Zhou Bo made a living by weaving thin koji (a kind of silkworm breeding utensils), and was a rough man in his bones, and when he earned the first merit of destroying Zhulu and supporting the new lord as an aether lieutenant, he was somewhat overwhelmed.

Emperor Wendi of Han entered The capital from daiji, and just after crossing the Weishui Bridge, Zhou Bo, driven by ambition, cleverly and self-defeatingly did a stupid thing, so that Emperor Wendi of Han had a very bad impression of him and was very wary.

What stupid thing did Zhou Bo do?

On the banks of the Weishui Bridge, he posed as the first hero, wanting to retreat from emperor Wen of Han and privately present the jade seal that was originally made in the qin shi huang period.

From the perspective of the temple, the private offering of jade seals has the meaning of privately granting imperial power, and Zhou Bo's move is suspected of seeking the ascension of powerful subjects to the throne.

Emperor Liu Heng of the Han Dynasty not only had an imperial creation, but also an imperial city palace, so Zhou Bo was severely rejected on the spot.

Almost from that moment on, Zhou Bo's bitter fate in the future was already doomed.

On the other hand, Chen Ping, the key strategy to kill Zhu Lü was all made by him, and his merits were comparable to Zhou Bo's, but at the sensitive moment of welcoming Emperor Wen of Han into the city and taking the throne, he gave up the position of the first gong to Zhou Bo.

As a fellow hero, why was Chen Ping able to occupy a high position without falling, while Zhou Bo was repeatedly suppressed by Emperor Wen of Han?

Emperor Liu Heng of the Han Dynasty had always shown his benevolence, but as soon as he sat on the throne of Weiyang Palace, he showed the style of a powerful king, in short, he could not be an emperor subject to his subjects.

According to historical records, on the night of entering Beijing, Emperor Wen of Han did one thing quite forcefully--appointing his own man Song Chang as a wei general and Zhenfu the two armies of the south and north; and appointing Zhang Wu as Lang Zhongling and inspecting the palace.

This action of Emperor Wen of Han revealed a very obvious signal: he did not trust the lieutenant Zhou Bo, and in order to control the capital and ensure the safety of the palace, he had to divide the military power in Zhou Bo's hands.

Zhou Bo was confused by the power and should have had the idea of being a powerful courtier, but he was not Zhao Gao after all, so he did not dare to resist Emperor Wen of Han's tough moves, and could only bow his head and obey.

Emperor Wen of Han acted in a very disciplined manner, and after successfully seizing the most important military power, he began to show favors to the courtiers, including Zhou Bo.

In October of the first year of Emperor Wen's reign (179 BC), Emperor Wen of Han, who had just reigned for one month, officially issued an edict -

He was given 10,000 jin of gold by 10,000 households of Zhou Bo and 5,000 jin of gold; Chen Ping and 3,000 households of the general who were given each of them were given 2,000 jin of gold.

As a fellow hero, why was Chen Ping able to occupy a high position without falling, while Zhou Bo was repeatedly suppressed by Emperor Wen of Han?

However, in a festive and peaceful atmosphere, Chen Ping was unusually calm and cunning.

The Zizhi Tongjian Han Ji V records that as soon as he accepted the reward of Emperor Wen of Han, Chen Ping did an intriguing thing, and he asked to resign from his post as Right Minister. Emperor Wen of Han asked him meaningfully whether there were any reasons other than illness, and Chen Ping replied schemingly that during emperor Gao's time, Zhou Bo's merits were inferior to those of his subjects; this time, when he destroyed Zhu Lü, his merits were not as good as Zhou Bo's, so he was willing to give up the position of right chancellor to Zhou Bo.

Chen Ping's words, a little bit of the city government can penetrate the famous hall, on the surface he is humble, in fact, he is retreating to advance, killing Zhou Bo.

When Chen Ping first defected to Liu Bang and was reused, the first to stand up against it was Zhou Bo, there was this layer of mustard, and the court had always been sinister, Zhou Bo should have seen through Chen Ping's bad intentions, but because of his natural nature, he was driven by the desire for power, and Zhou Bo actually sat down on the seat of the Right Minister.

This is not the end, the Zizhi Tongjian Han Ji V records that After Zhou Bo took over as the Right Minister, he often looked arrogant, and every time he returned to the dynasty, he always took a big stride and retreated with arrogance.

In the face of such a Zhou Bo, Emperor Wendi of Han endured while brewing the opportunity to suppress.

Soon, such a scene appeared in the Great Han Dynasty Hall -

Once when he was about to listen to the government, Emperor Wen of Han casually asked Zhou Bo, "Within one year of age, how will the world be sentenced to prison?" Zhou Bo was stunned for half a day, and then replied, "The minister does not know." Emperor Wen of Han asked again, "Within one year of age, how much money and valleys in and out of the world?" Zhou Bo was sweating profusely and dazed.

At this time, Emperor Wen of Han turned to ask Chen Ping, who had been changed to Zuo Cheng xiang.

Chen Ping immediately replied: Each of these two matters has a full-time job, and they are all subordinates. If Your Majesty wants to know the number, the courtier may summon him to inquire.

Hearing this, Emperor Wen of Han said in a loud voice, "Since there are people in charge of everything, what else do you have to be in charge of as a zuoxiang?" ”

Chen Ping knelt down and apologized, "The minister is sincerely afraid. His Majesty did not know that his subjects were obtuse, so he treated them in the position of the left minister. The subject thought that the office of the chancellor should be that of the Heavenly Son of Shangzuo Tianzi to rationalize the yin and yang, shun the four times; to care for the people, to persuade farming, to cultivate all things; to the four princes of the outer town, and to unify the hundred officials in the inner town to make them perform their duties. This upper, lower, inner and outer is the office of the Minister. If it is improper, His Majesty may condemn his subjects. ”

Emperor Wen of Han bowed his head and said, "Qing Yan is very true. ”

Obviously, Emperor Wen of Han and Chen Ping silently sang a double reed to suppress Zhou Bo in the court. Judging from Zhou Bo's performance, he has no problem charging into the battlefield, and as the first phase of the DPRK, he is really not good.

Fortunately, after this blow, Zhou Bo finally woke up, and then he wrote a letter thanking him for his illness and asking him to return the seal.

Emperor Wen of Han was not polite, and immediately gave up the role, dismissed Zhou Boxiang from his post, no longer divided between left and right, and exclusively used Chen Ping as the chancellor, commanding hundreds of officials and taking charge of the government.

As a fellow hero, why was Chen Ping able to occupy a high position without falling, while Zhou Bo was repeatedly suppressed by Emperor Wen of Han?

Chen Ping died alone for less than a year, creating a miracle in the early Han Dynasty - through Emperor Gao, Emperor Hui, Lü Hou, emperor Wen, the fourth emperor did not fall, and reached the peak.

At this time, Zhou Bo, who was wooden and illiterate of current affairs, made another serious mistake, and after Chen Ping's death, he retired with his whole body to be considered wise, but he actually made a comeback again under the false appointment of Emperor Wen of Han.

As a result, it is conceivable that soon Zhou Bo was expelled from the capital and went to the feudal state he received.

From the peak to the bottom again, the great general who was once in the limelight was finally beaten back to the original form of the grass people. Fearing being killed, he was in a state of panic day and night, sometimes even wearing a suit of armor and ordering his family to be armed and wait.

Emperor Wen of Han seized this opportunity and threw the elderly Zhou Bo into prison on the charge of deliberate rebellion, with the intention of executing him.

Fortunately, at that stage, there were many good people in the Han Dynasty, and many people stood up to speak for Zhou Bo, including Empress Bo, who had authority.

Empress Bo said to her son Emperor Wen of Han with dissatisfaction that she thought that in the beginning, Zhou Bo was in charge of Emperor Yuxi, who was also the commander of the Northern Army, but did not rebel; now that she is living in a remote town, she has instead created a rebellion, can this teach people to believe? I don't know whose rumors I listened to, but I did such a stupid thing that humiliated the heroes!

Emperor Wen of Han only then gave up and pardoned Zhou Bo.

After escaping death, Zhou Bo, who had become a poor man, often sighed alone at the sunset: "I have tasted a million troops, and Ran An knows the preciousness of the prison guards." ”

Zhou Bo, who had once been in the limelight, ended up with a small prison guard who was as majestic as a god in his eyes. Li Yan of the Ming Dynasty read the history to this point and wrote down eight words: "When the hero arrives here, he is really in tears." ”
