Although Liu Zhang was weak and incompetent, he had three famous generals under his command, and Liu Bei praised him after his surrender

In the eyes of many readers, Jingzhou Mu Liu Biao and Yizhou Mu Liu Zhang are synonymous with the lord of mediocrity. In fact, Luo Guanzhong, the author of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", deliberately weakened these two high-ranking and powerful Han clan relatives in order to create Liu Bei's tenacious image. In history, Liu Biao broke into Jingzhou alone, calmed down all kinds of bandits in a short period of time, and successfully won the support of the major scholar clans.

On the other hand, Liu Zhang, who ruled Yizhou for many years, used benevolence and love for the people as a means to get strong support from the people of Shuzhong. It should be pointed out that Liu Zhang's love for the people is really for the people's consideration, not liu bei's efforts to win a false name and buy people's hearts. Not only that, Liu Zhang's men were also full of talents, and from the military generals alone, there were three generals who were sincerely praised by Liu Bei for their excellent ability to lead troops. They were Wu Yi, Li Yan and Ma Zhong.

First, let's look at Wu Yi, the general of Yizhou. Wu Yiben was a native of Chenliu Commandery (陳留郡, in modern Kaifeng, Henan), who had followed Liu Zhang's father Liu Yan into Shu in his early years, serving as a general in Zhonglang, while his sister Wu had married Liu Mao under Liu Yan's arrangement. After Liu Zhang inherited his father's business, Wu Yi continued to be reused, and coupled with his in-law relationship with Liu, Yin Yin became the core figure of the Yizhou Group. After Liu Bei entered Shu, in order to gain the support of the Yizhou shi clan, he married Wu Shi (Liu Mao had died of illness at this time) as his wife.

In this way, Wu Yi subsequently became the uncle of the Shu Han clique. Although Wu Yi had a very high status and high prestige, he was not just a clumsy disciple, during Zhuge Liang's Northern Expedition, Wu Yi had many brilliant performances, "Eight years after Jianxing, he and Wei Yan entered the Nan'an border, broke the Wei general Fei Yao, migrated to the Marquis of Ting, entered the Marquis of Gaoyang Township, and moved to the left general." In fact, Wu Yi had defeated Cao Wei's famous generals Fei Yao, Guo Huai and others, and calling him a famous general could be described as a well-deserved one.

The second is Li Yan, who has both culture and martial arts. In the impression of many readers, Li Yan is just a civilian official, in fact, Li Yan's ability to lead troops is not inferior to others. According to the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms and the Biography of Li Yan, "Twenty-three years later, the thieves Ma Qin and Gao Sheng rebelled in Yu, gathered tens of thousands of troops, and went to Zizhong County. When the lord was in Hanzhong, Yan bu sent an army, but led 5,000 soldiers to beg for it, and beheaded Qin and Sheng. It can be seen that in the face of tens of thousands of rebels, Li Yan only led 5,000 men and horses to successfully eliminate the bandits and wipe out all the bandits. Since then, Liu Bei has become more serious about Li Yan. Not only that, Li Yan was also arranged by Liu Bei as a trusted and important minister, in order to restrain Zhuge Liang from covering the sky with one hand. It is not difficult to find that Liu Bei has great trust in Li Yan.

Finally, ma zhong, who was good at appeasing and educating barbarians (not Ma Zhong, who captured Guan Yu). After Liu Bei's army defeated Yiling, the unknown Ma Zhong came to support with five thousand Basong defenders, and after a conversation between Liu Bei and Ma Zhong, Liu Bei happily said to Liu Ba: "Although Huang Quan died, he regained The Fox Du (Ma Zhong), there is no shortage of sages in this world. Huang Quan was originally a famous scholar in Shuzhong, and was deeply valued by liu bei after he entered Shu. However, in Liu Bei's mind, Ma Zhong, as a general, could be compared with the sage Huang Quan, which showed the prominence of his personal talent. Sure enough, Ma Zhong's performance did not disappoint Liu Bei. In the later period of the Shu Dynasty, Ma Zhong repeatedly quelled rebellions and border disputes. Later, when he was defending the south, Ma Zhong also adopted a policy of combining rigidity and softness, which completely brought the southern barbarians to the Shu state.
