From meandering rivers to lush woodlands, in Suzhou, birdwatchers and birdwatchers use their cameras to "capture" the abundant bird species, and also witness the continuous improvement of the ecological environment.
A sunscreen hat, a large backpack, and binoculars around his neck are the equipment that Xu Bin wears every time he goes out to shoot birds.
Over the years, Xu Bin has carried these "guys" all over the mountains, forests and rivers of Suzhou, recording more than 200 species of birds that inhabit this activity.
"I started photographing birds in 2018, and it feels really good because I get in touch with nature and listen to the birds and insects. Suzhou basically went to all the places it should go, including the Yangtze River, the big lawn of Zhangjiagang, the edge of Taihu Lake, Wangshan, including Yangcheng Lake, because of the birds, it is not sure where it suddenly appears. Xu Bin, a bird-watching expert, said.
Pu Huxing, who is also a bird photography enthusiast and lives in Suzhou Industrial Park, is 74 years old this year. As long as the weather is good, the old man will take his camera to Yangcheng Lake and Jinji Lake to shoot birds, and use the lens in his hand to pay attention to record the survival and reproduction of birds and record the endless life of nature. This year, together with Xu Bin, he was hired by the park as "bird observers", giving full play to their expertise and recording all kinds of cute "air spirits".
"I started to photograph birds five or six years ago, especially egrets, which I photographed the most, and also nightjars, magpies, hoopoes, gray birds, etc. There are more and more varieties, because now the environment is much better than before. Birdwatcher Pu Huxing said.
Birds are an important indicator to evaluate the quality of the natural ecological environment. At present, the city's forest coverage rate is 20.56%, and the wetland protection rate is 72%. Among them, more than 20,000 birds have been found in Taihu Lakeside National Wetland Park for many years, and have passed the on-site assessment of the expert group of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and declared a wetland of international importance. Tianfu National Wetland Park's "700 acres of farmland in the Taihu Lake Basin and 10% of China's bird species cases" was selected as one of the "100+ Global Typical Cases of Biodiversity" by the United Nations, becoming a global model for wetland biodiversity conservation. In May this year, Suzhou released the results of its first biodiversity background survey, recording a total of 4,353 species of various species and 298 species of birds.
As birdwatchers, Xu Bin and Pu Huxing not only witnessed the improvement of Suzhou's ecological environment, but also used their own strength to make more people aware of the importance of ecological protection.
"I held a personal film festival, so that everyone around us knows that there are so many birds in Suzhou, and everyone likes this bird and cares for the environment. And this summer, I also taught a lesson to the children, hoping to pass on the birds I photographed to their hearts, so that they can establish a sense of ecological protection and respect for life. Xu Bin said.
"By environmental protection, I mean that everyone knows to protect the environment and protect birds. I will take more photos in the future to let everyone know how beautiful our Suzhou is and how beautiful the environment is. Pu Huxing said.
In June this year, a comprehensive exhibition platform for ecological civilization integrating exhibition, education and interaction on the shore of Dongsha Lake was officially opened to the public.
Li Jinmei, the person in charge of the venue of the Ecological Civilization Education Base in Suzhou Industrial Park, said that for primary and secondary school students or some residents who play nearby, they just want them to have a deeper concept popularization after watching here.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Suzhou has followed the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets", focused on the prevention and control of air, water and soil pollution, and vigorously promoted the continuous improvement of the quality of the ecological environment. In the first half of this year, the proportion of excellent water quality in the city's 80 national and provincial test sections was 98.8%, an increase of 3.8 percentage points year-on-year, and the water environment quality reached the best level in history; the city's PM2.5 concentration was 30 micrograms per cubic meter, and the ratio of good days was 80.8%, all of which ranked in the forefront of the province, and the people's satisfaction with the ecological environment reached 92.5%.
