Recently, public documents show that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing giant BYD (BYD) is approaching the stage of entering the Canada market.
Representatives of BYD filed documents in Ottawa seeking advice on what to expect from BYD entering the Canada passenger electric vehicle market, as well as consulting on the establishment of new businesses and the application of electric vehicle tariffs, according to Automotive News Canada and The Globe and Mail.

BYD's market entry plans have not yet specified when and how, but according to automotive industry insiders, BYD recently met with Canada dealers to discuss establishing a local distribution network.
While the documents did not detail a timeline for setting up the business, industry insiders said BYD had held private talks with dealers in key markets to explore logistical arrangements for establishing a local presence in Canada.
Some speculate that the plan will make Canada a springboard for BYD to enter the United States market.

It is worth noting that BYD surpassed Tesla at the end of 2023 to become the world's largest electric vehicle brand by sales. In addition, BYD has also been deeply involved in the Mexico market, and recently chose to launch its Shark small pickup truck in the country. The starting price is 899,980 pesos (about 66,907.29 Canadian dollars).

Earlier this year, BYD announced plans to set up a plant in Mexico, near the United States, a move that alarmed United States automakers. Subsequently, BYD said that it would not export vehicles from its Mexico plant.
Industry insiders are worried that BYD's entry into Canada will be its way into the United States auto market.
According to Joe McCabe, CEO of United States AutoForecast Solutions, BYD has the potential to use Canada and Mexico as "gateways" to the United States market, as the United States market is the "ultimate goal" for the Chinese EV giant.
BYD's entry will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the North American electric vehicle market, and it will also attract the attention of the government. Trade officials in Ottawa are weighing tariffs on electric car imports from China.
