Emerson: Geniuses are those who believe in themselves

Believe in your own thoughts, believe in what you affirm deep within yourself, and many will recognize it — that's genius.

Despite the simplicity of the language of Moses, Plato, and Milton, their greatest contribution to becoming great men was in their contempt for book dogma, in their freedom from traditional customs, and in speaking their own, not the thoughts of others. One should learn to discover and observe more of the flickering spark in the depths of one's own soul, and not just look up at the light in the air of the poet and the sage. Unfortunately, man does not pay attention to his own thoughts, and unconsciously abandons them, simply because it belongs to him.

In the writings of genius we recognize ideas that we have given up on, which appear alien and solemn. So they are accepted for us— and even great literature has no deeper lesson. These lost and regained ideas warn us that when the voice of the masses is at odds with us, we should also follow the truth we affirm and be willing not to compromise.

As knowledge increases, people will surely realize that jealousy is ignorance, imitation is suicide; that regardless of whether one is in a bad situation, one should be self-directed; that the potential hidden in man is endless, that he is capable of anything that no one else can know, and that if he does not try, he will always be ignorant of this ability of his own.

Believe in yourself! This call shook every heart.

This has always been the case with the great men, who childlikely poured out their hearts to the elites of their time, exposed their minds to the public, and made themselves self-sufficient; thus excelling from the superclass.

But people are often imprisoned by their own consciousness. Once his words and deeds brought him fame, he was subject to the likes and dislikes of the people, and it was inevitable that he would please others. He could no longer put other people's feelings aside.

Compromise with the outside world threatens people's self-confidence. Often, you are respectful and fearful of your past words and deeds, only to reconcile with them, because there is no other data for others to calculate your trajectory than your past behavior; and it is not what you want to disappoint.

But why look back, why drag the zombies of memory along so as not to contradict the ideas you stated in public? If that's a fallacy you have to refute, so what? It seems that even in the act of pure memory, you can not rely solely on memory, but should judge the past in the present that is universally obvious, and continue to redeem yourself from now on - this is the way of wisdom.

Foolish compromise and conciliation are the tricks of villains, and they are worshipped by small politicians, philosophers, and theologians.

We should say with certainty what we think today, and tomorrow we should say what we think tomorrow, even if it is diametrically opposed to today's view. " Oops, you're going to be misunderstood!" Is it so undesirable to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and socrates, Luther, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and every flesh-and-blood intelligent spirit of ancient and modern times, who has not been misunderstood? To be a great man, it is inevitable to be misunderstood.

Man is often cowardly and apologetic; he does not dare to say "I think" or "I am", but quotes the words of some sages and wise men; he also feels guilty in the face of a blade of grass or a rose. He may be troubled by longing or tired of remembrance; in fact, the origin of virtue and vitality is unruly and unknowable; why should you look at people's tracks, look at people's appearance, and listen to people's commands--your behavior, your thoughts, and character should be completely different.
