At present, map design is helping human beings to continuously innovate production and lifestyles in a ubiquitous situation, and is playing an increasingly significant role in promoting the process of Chinese modernization and dominating the global narrative discourse. In particular, with the successful holding of the first "Xinghu Cup" map design competition in Wuhan University, the attention and enthusiasm of the academics, the industry and the public for map design have been unprecedentedly high.

After more than half a century of exploration and development, map design has gradually developed into an emerging interdisciplinary discipline that integrates a variety of academic wisdom. As a discipline with strong practical attributes, map design is too much to accumulate and summarize experience at the practical level, and the lack of underlying rationality makes it difficult to effectively establish discipline legitimacy, discipline systematization and discipline system. In this context, it is urgent to establish a relatively independent knowledge system, theoretical logic and research paradigm of map design. This is a core issue that is directly related to the top-level architecture of map design.

Special issue on "Towards Map Design".

The unique nature of map design determines the establishment of its discipline system, which is rooted in the summary and condensation of a large number of practices in history and reality on the one hand, and from the rational analysis of the origin, attributes and values of the discipline on the other hand.

In view of this, the special issue of "Towards Map Design" returns to the background of map design, explores the advantages of map design in theory and practice, as well as the uniqueness of the vision of understanding the world with this advantage, forms a clear theoretical concept and system framework of map design, promotes the close integration of theory and practice, promotes map design to the forefront of the development agenda of map science, and meets the needs of social progress, cultural inheritance and human development with more open knowledge production and discourse creation.
