Kia EV6 GT or Hyundai Ioniq 5 N? We compare two related and sporty electric cars against each other to see where the driving pleasure is the greatest.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has received a lot of publicity since its launch in March. In colorful terms, it is known as the first electric car officially dedicated to car enthusiasts. It's fun and exciting for the modern era, and the Kia is sure to leave a slightly strange flavor.

Some time ago, the Kia EV5 GT, which is based on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, was launched. It's been almost two years, actually. It boasts close to 600bhp, drift mode, sports seats, and neon-coloured brake calipers, but it's just a footnote when it comes to the associated Ioniq 5 N.

Does it deserve it, or does the Kia EV6 GT deserve more attention? I took a closer look at this when I compared it to the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

How do they drive?

Kia's development of the EV6 GT was not easy, and it boasts a range of engineering techniques that enhance driving pleasure. In addition to the additional power provided by two electric motors on each axle for a total of 585 horsepower, the chassis, steering, brakes, and electronic systems were patched.

The chassis of the EV6 GT has reinforced mounting points, new springs, and a new front axle to withstand the extra forces. The chassis is electronically adaptive and works better with reinforced steering and reinforced anti-roll bars. The electronic limited-slip differential ensures optimal distribution of force, while the larger brakes ensure that the car comes to a strong stop again.

Hyundai has done all of this with the Ioniq 5 N as well. They just made it wilder. The Kia is equipped with a stronger anti-roll bar when driving, while the entire chassis of the Ioniq 5 N is reinforced with up to 42 additional welds. Kia reinforced the mounting points of the chassis, whereas Hyundai reinforced the mounting points of the chassis, electric motor, and battery. In addition, both axles of the Ioniq 5 N have been replaced, not just the front axle in the EV6 GT.

The battery capacity is also larger, with a total capacity of 84 kWh. However, the higher fuel consumption roughly corresponds to a range of 424 km for the EV6 GT and 448 km for the Ioniq 5 N.

The Kia has 585 horsepower and the Hyundai has 650 horsepower. The Kia has a 380mm front brake, and the Hyundai has a 400mm front brake. And so the story continues. Hyundai is also doing more work on the development of electronic systems that must make the engine, steering, pedals, and lock-up differentials work together in the best possible way. They increase user engagement with the car's electronic setup. As a result, the adjustment possibilities of the Ioniq 5 N are almost limitless, while the adjustment possibilities of the EV6 GT are limited to a few driving modes.

Kia EV6 GT

The acceleration of the Kia EV6 GT is amazing. Not only does it take only 3.5 seconds to go from a standstill to 100 km/h, but also at moderate acceleration. Whether it's overtaking on a ramp or on the highway, it's hard not to slam on the gas. The reason for this is simple, as the EV6 GT gives it a hard push from behind every time. That's the fun with 585 hp and 740 Nm.

The adaptive chassis is noticeably tightened in Sport mode, while in normal driving it appears balanced and calm. In other words, everything that a large 21-inch alloy wheel can do now, the main weakness of which is the obvious unevenness, gets into the cab.

Unfortunately, the steering is not as tight as the chassis. On the other hand, it's a bit oddly heavy, and the front wheels don't give the feel of a sports car you want. The steering meant that the EV6 GT couldn't hide the massive combat weight of over 2.2 tons. Luckily, the enlarged brakes work as intended, with a natural brake pedal and impressive stopping power.

In fact, one should not be really surprised. After all, the name of the car is Kia EV6 GT, where GT stands for Grand Tourer. The torque is strong, overtaking is easy to deal with, the chassis is well balanced, and the direction is stable. It's fast, but uncompromising – the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N wants something different.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The acceleration of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is also violent. Press the NBG button and you'll have 10 seconds to get a total of 650 horsepower, otherwise you'll have to make do with 609 horsepower. In the Ioniq 5 N, the acceleration is just less than in the EV6 GT. The letter "N" in the model name rhymes with lap times and cornering characteristics, not just uncompromised.

The N represents both Namyang, where the car was developed, and the Nürburgring, where Hyundai tests sports cars. You can feel it. In addition to the physical changes that make the Ioniq 5 N stiffer and stronger, the setup of the electronic magic is quite noticeable, allowing the car to go around corners in a Ballstyrian fashion.

The number of electronic systems is beyond what I can cover in one article, but they work and they don't make the driving experience fake. Conversely, in the right-turn combo, the Ioniq 5 N feels very similar. Although the brake pedal is not physically connected to the brakes, and the torque vectoring system constantly distributes the force across the four wheels. The electronics work constantly, but you don't feel it.

Like the EV6 GT, the combat weight is more than 2.2 tons, but it is much more concealed, which is why the Ioniq 5 N is able to take turns fighting with amazing enthusiasm. The steering system is heavier and more precise than Ya's. As a result, the front end of the Ioniq 5 N can make sharp turns more easily and eagerly, making it truly entertaining.

Also supporting the entertainment value are the "engine sound" and the replica 8-speed gearbox. This trick sounds silly on paper, but in reality it works surprisingly well. In addition to the fun and bumps in the cab, when the car "shifts", it allows you to know the speed when driving fast, and in moments of weakness you can completely forget that the car is electric. If you listen, you'll find the sound quite artificial, but it can be turned off quickly

Refreshing seats and good practice

In the hut, the difference becomes smaller. In both the Kia EV6 GT and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, a relatively classic approach is taken to equip two fairly mass-market friendly cabs. There are aluminum pedals in the cockpit, and the color contrast stitching and material pattern are not found in the domestic version.

As the trends in this matchup show, Hyundai has made some extra efforts to make this sportiness possible. A new steering wheel is offered here, and despite the many extra buttons, it gives it a sporty feel when you sit behind it. In direct comparison, the EV6 GT's steering wheel is a bit clunky, while the Ioniq 5 N's buttons, while numerous, help with many sporty driving settings.

Hyundai has also replaced the center console, so in the Ioniq 5 N, you can now use your legs for support when you turn angrily. There is also a small pillow on top so that the knees don't hurt. Overall, however, in both cars, you'll feel like you're moving in a higher air layer purely in terms of variants, and there's a long distance between the sticky plastic materials.

Both cars are equipped with a set of serious front seats, which are mounted closer to the floor to better wrap around the body. Here, there is no difference between the two, but it must be mentioned because you are comfortable sitting in both places.

The only obstruction from the front seats is the view of the rear passengers. With an integrated headrest and wide shoulders, they take up part of the forward visibility. Luckily, the Kia EV6 GT and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N offer great space, just as they do in the less aggressive versions. Ample legroom, flat floors, and an adjustable backrest create two good rear seats.

Price and equipment

If you opt for the Kia EV6 GT or the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, you won't be able to climb higher on the gear ladder of the respective Korean brands. In addition to the large number of sports trim that not only adorns the cabin, but also provides a large number of external sports optics, a large number of comfort equipment is also equipped in the both.

There are equipment such as heated front and rear seats, head-up displays, 360-degree cameras, and a large and well-played sound system, which is provided by Meridan in the EV6 and Bose in the Ioniq 5. The smartphone wireless charger charges faster than the EV6 GT, while the keyless operation in the Ioniq 5 N can be fully converted to a digital key on the smartphone. In addition, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N also comes with digital mirrors, while the Kia EV6 GT does not. As the only gear package available, the Ioniq 5 N has the option of a Performance Package, which really just means that the beautiful sports seats are wrapped in leather and ventilated.

The Kia EV6 GT is the cheapest at 559,900 DKK, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N starts at 599,995 DKK and goes up to 619,995 DKK plus the available performance packages. As a result, it's DKK 40,000 more expensive than its counterparts, and it's neither the digital mirrors nor the digital keys that make the difference.

Two glorious, one strong

It is the fully formed motion positioning that causes the difference in price. As I determined at the beginning of the duel, Hyundai did everything Kia did and more. In particular, the development, control, and calibration of the electronic systems that help large cars drive like small cars ultimately make a significant difference between the two.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N's extra 40,000 DKK is worth every penny. And it is this money that ensures the unfettered fun it offers, making it the most interesting electric car available at the moment. It makes Kia stand out, and out of the two contenders, I would have no hesitation in going with the Ioniq 5 N.

However, the great work done by Hyundai should not cost the Kia EV6 GT anything of it. It's a brilliant car that ultimately wants something completely different from its crazy sister. It doesn't run on the track, which is why it's not a shame to be completely kicked off the track. Superior performance and comfort make it a great luxury tourer, and despite the drift mode, it's not designed to be super strong on the track.
