Industry insiders analyze that at present, at the time of "green and yellow", the summer vegetable market is basically over, a small number of autumn and winter vegetables are listed, coupled with the rapid cooling this year, more rain, the growth of vegetables in the main production areas is slow, and the production of vegetables in some areas is reduced after being flooded by rain, and the market supply is reduced, resulting in a significant increase in vegetable prices.
He Xiaojie, a vegetable price analyst at The Shouguang Agricultural Products Logistics Park, said that as the weather became cooler, vegetables in northern production areas were steadily delisted, and the supply of tomatoes, organic cauliflower and other vegetables was tight, prompting prices to rise.
"Affected by the continuous rainfall in the northern vegetable producing areas since mid-to-late September, vegetable productivity has not yet recovered, and vegetables in some places have deteriorated due to rain soaking and rotten heart damage, and the yield has dropped significantly." He Xiaojie said.
Liu Tong, head of the Market Statistics Department of Beijing Xinfadi, analyzed that taking spinach in the Beijing market as an example, affected by continuous rainfall, the spinach produced in Liaocheng, Shandong Province, was soaked, and it was impossible to arrange for farmers to replant in time, and could only rely on follow-up greenhouse production to ensure supply, but the spinach produced in greenhouses would take a while to be listed. In addition, since the beginning of this year, the price of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and other prices have risen, driving up the cost of vegetable planting; oil prices have continued to rise, and in September, gasoline and diesel prices rose by 23.4% and 25.7% respectively, driving the increase in transportation costs, which also boosted vegetable prices.

He Xiaojie analyzed that the current vegetable market demand is strong, such as the active entry of customers in the north, as well as the opening of schools and the start of units after the National Day, and the demand for canteens has increased. In addition, Shanxi and other places are affected by heavy rainfall, the self-supply capacity of vegetables is insufficient, the demand of buyers is amplified, the goods are smooth, and the price is easy to rise and fall in the short term.
Many vegetable wholesalers predict that as the weather turns clear and vegetable transportation returns to normal, vegetable prices will fall, but still higher than the normal prices in previous years.
It is worth noting that the rapid rise in vegetable prices since October may lead to a rebound in the national consumer price index (CPI) food data. Maintaining stable supply and demand and price stability in the consumer market is facing certain pressure.
