The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024
Blue Transformation in action
The 2024 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture highlights Blue Transformation in Action, including FAO's activities and initiatives in collaboration with Members, partners and key stakeholders in integrating aquatic foods into global food security and sustainability issues, strengthening policy advice, scientific research and capacity building, promoting sustainable practices and technological innovations, and supporting community engagement.
Part 1 of this report provides an update on the production and use of world fisheries and aquaculture, benefiting from significant advances in data collection, analysis and evaluation tools and methodologies. Part 2 highlights the role of FAO and its partners in driving transformational change to support the scale-up and intensification of aquaculture, the effective management of global fisheries and the upgrading of the aquaculture value chain. Section 3 describes the major challenges and opportunities presented by the untapped potential of whole fish and by-product utilization, illustrates the important role that aquatic food systems can play, provides critical and appropriate solutions to climate change, protects biodiversity and the environment, and highlights the importance of integrating aquatic food systems into national and multilateral processes. Based on the projections, the report also proposes a future trend outlook through 2032.
The 2024 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture provides policymakers, managers, scientists, fishers, fish farmers, traders, civil society activists and consumers alike with up-to-date, evidence-based information on current and future challenges, opportunities and innovations impacting fisheries and aquaculture, supporting policy, science and technology insights.
