2. Design the main body pattern

Step 1

In order to create the correct geometry design, this is a good start to turn on the Smart Guide (CTRL-U or View > Smart Guide).

Now let's start drawing a 17-segment geometric flower, first creating a petal frame.

From the toolbar, select Ellipse Tool (L).

To create an ellipse precisely, click once on the artboard to use the Ellipse dialog. A dialog box opens.

Set the Width and Height to 500 px.

Step 2

Next, select the ellipse, then Copy (ctrl-C) and Paste in front (ctrl-F) to create the same ellipse on top of the original ellipse.

Then, move the selection (object > transform) to apply 99 pixels of horizontal distance.

Step 3

To create the petal shape, we need to cut out the intersecting part of the ellipse.

Open the Pathfinder panel: Window > Pathfinder. Select Shape Mode: Intersect.

Step 4

Take the Direct Selection Tool (A) from the toolbar and select the left and right anchors. To design the bottom of the petals, command the shift-M to move through the anchor point by 45 pixels vertically.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 5

Next, let's center the bottom of the petals onto the artboard.

Turn on Snap To Point: View > Snap To Point so that the selection snaps to the center of the artboard.

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select the shape and snap it to the point centered on the marker, highlighted in red in the Smart Wizard.

Step 6

Select the Rotate Tool (R), then hold down the Alt key to fix the center of the Pivot Point of Rotation to the bottom of the petals. This opens the Rotation dialog box.

To calculate the radius required for 17 segments, divide 360° by 17 to get 21.18°. Therefore, set the rotation angle to 21.18° (counterclockwise) or -21.18° clockwise.

Select Duplicate to duplicate the petals.

Step 7

Use the shortcut Ctrl-D to transform again and repeat the rest of the petal rotation.

ctrl-G groups them together. Save the file > (ctrl S).

Step 8

Now let's draw some ellipses around the pattern. Take the Ellipse Tool (L) and select White Fill, No Stroke.

Follow the smart guide and draw a 65 pixel "width and height" ellipse in the center of the pattern. Then, draw a 25 px ellipse in the center of the pattern and draw it with black Fill and null strokes.

Step 9

Now, we have created a petal with a radius of 500 px, so the circumference of the flower should be twice the diameter. Using the Ellipse Tool (L), create a circle with a width and height set to 1000 px, an empty fill, and 15 pt of black strokes. Use the Smart Wizard to center it.

If you want to make sure that the object is centered on the artboard, open the Alignment panel (Window > Align). Simply select the object, and then select Align to Artboard from the Alignment Options dialog box. Then select Align center horizontally and vertically.

Step 10

Next, we'll offset the ellipse around the pattern. With the outer ellipse selected, select Object> Path> Offset Path, and then select Offset: 20 pixels. Then set its stroke to 10 points. Then repeat Object> Path, > Offset Path, and then offset by 65 pixels.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 11

With the newly created path selected, let's repeat the offset with Object> Path> Offset Path, with an offset of 20 px. Set the stroke to 15 points.

I've decided to enlarge the artwork slightly to fit the frame. Objects > transformed > scaled. Set it to 115% evenly, and then click OK.

Step 12

Next, let's use Arc Tool to create a leaf-like pattern to fill the space in the corners.

Click and hold the Segment Tool (\) to select the Arc Tool. Then click once on the artboard to set the curvature setting in the Arc Tool Options dialog box:

  • X-axis length: 129 pixels
  • Click where you want the arc to start on the square reference point locator to determine the point from which the arc is drawn.
  • Y-axis length: 222 pixels
  • Type: Open-ended
  • Level: Convex 77
  • Good

Step 13

Use smart guides to draw one arc from the top intersection point to the ellipse intersection point, and another arc from the ellipse intersection point to the top leaf anchor point.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 14

Select the Direct Selection tool (A) from the toolbar, and then select the top anchor point to join the path via Object> Paths> Join (Ctrl-J).

The creation of the leaf is then repeated by drawing a leaf that intersects the bottom left and top right corners of the base leaf. Align the path correctly following the intersection points highlighted by the Smart Guide.

Then, use the Direct Selection tool (A) and the Join Path (ctrl-J) to select the top anchor point of each leaf.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 15

Press Ctrl-G to group the leaf patterns together.

Select the Rotate tool (R), and then set the Pivot Point of Rotation to the center of the pattern. Hold down the Shift key and hold down the Alt key to drag to copy the angle and limit it to 45°. As you drag, the reflection axis rotates and snaps to that angle and releases. Repeat to fill in the other edges.

3. Add detailed patterns and colors

Step 1

Now that our mode is basically set up, we can add some details

Select the first ellipse around the central theme, and the object > path > offset the path to compensate at 36 pixels and OK.

Then open the Stroke panel (Window > Stroke), set the Stroke Thickness to 66 pt, select Dashed, and set dash-gap-dash-gap to 10pt-10pt-10pt-90pt to create a double dash pattern around it. Make sure to select the Preserve Exact Dash and Gap Length icon from the options.

Step 2

Next, we'll create a small pattern in a floral pattern.

Select the Ellipse Tool (L), then use the black Fill, empty Stroke, to draw a single ellipse with a width of 23 px and a height of 62 px.

Next, draw two smaller ellipses with a width of 15 pixels and a height of 15 pixels on either side of a single ellipse. Follow the Smart Wizard to align them correctly.

Then, select the Anchor Point Tool (Shift-C) and taper the end of the intermediate ellipse as shown below.

然后将所有三个对象分组(Command-G)。

Step 3

Using the Direct Selection tool (A), select a set of circles and drag vertically down to the next rectangular gap while holding down the Shift-Alt key to constrain the movement and duplicate the group.

Thereafter, manually zoom down the group from the bounding box while holding down the Shift key - Alt key.

Then repeat this step, repeating the second set and moving it vertically down to the third rectangular gap, using the boundary to zoom out slightly while holding down the Shift-Alt key.

Your theme should look similar to this.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 4

The three objects of the group (Command-G) are put together.

Select the Rotate tool (R). Hold down the Alt key to fix the Pivot Point of Rotation at the center of the pattern. This opens the Rotation dialog box. Set the rotation angle to -21.18° in a clockwise direction, and then select Copy.

Convert again (Command-D) to copy the remaining 17 segments.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 5

Next, we'll add a circular pattern between the dotted lines.

The Take Ellipse Tool (L) uses a black fill, a null stroke, and draws a 23 px center dotted inner circle.

Then, draw a black stroke (empty Fill) around the first circle.

In the Paint Stroke panel, select the setting as:

  • Weight: 11 points
  • Cap: Round cap
  • Angular Sphere: Rounding
  • Select the dotted line and set the dash: 0 dots and the gap: 25 dots
  • Select the Align dashed lines to corners and path endpoints icon

This will create points around our circle.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 6

Group (directive-G) into circles with a dashed path.

Select the Rotate tool (R). Hold down the Alt key to open the Rotation dialog box and set the Pivot Point of Rotation in the center of the pattern. Set the rotation angle to -11.18° in a clockwise direction, and then select Copy.

Transform again (Ctrl-D) until all the space around the dashed line is filled.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 7

Take the Direct Selection tool (A) and select the third ellipse around the pattern.

The object > path > offset path with an offset of 1 0 px.

In the Stroke panel, set the stroke settings for the new path to:

  • Weight: 10 lbs
  • Cap: Round cap
  • Angular Sphere: Rounding
  • Select the dotted line, and set the dash: 0 dots and the gap: 40 dots
  • Select the icon to preserve the exact dash and gap length.

4. Add detailed color information

Step 1

Let's color!

Start with strokes. To speed up the movement, select a stroke, then click Select> Same> Stroke Thickness, and it will select all strokes of the same thickness.

Apply a stroke color. I'll start with these hexadecimal colors:

  • Ocean Blue #23255a
  • Aqua #1b82bc
  • Sky blue #27aae1
  • Aqua #20baae
  • Green #009e8f
Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 2

Next, we need to upload a color sample and then open the Samples panel (Window > Samples). In the panel, click the New Swatch button, or select New Swatch from the menu.

I uploaded a few colors to try the most effective method.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 3

Let's apply color to the shape.

Use the Selection tool (V) to select a floral pattern. Next, click on the Live Paint Bucket Tool (K), which is hidden under the Shape Builder Tool (Shift-M), and click Select. This converts the selected objects to the Live Paint group.

So, as you move the Live Paint Bucket Tool (K) over it, different parts that are ready to be painted will be highlighted. This tool basically lets you fill in the gaps and shapes.

Now try it and fill different areas with different colors.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 4

Use the Selection tool (V) and select all three groups we created for the floral pattern, then ungroup (Shift-Ctrl-G) from their groups twice.

Use the Selection Tool (V) to select shapes of similar size, group them by Command-G, and apply the color Fill from the Swatches panel of your choice.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 5

Use the Direct Selection Tool (V) to select the black circle surrounded by a dashed path. Select each and apply a different Swatch Fill for each.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 6

Let's create a background for the theme.

Select the Rectangle Tool (M), click once on the artboard, and the Rectangle dialog opens. Set the Width and Height to 1500 pixels and give the selection a dark blue tint.

Center it from the Alignment panel by selecting Align to Artboard from the Alignment Options dialog box. Then select Align center horizontally and vertically.

Objects are > arranged > sent back (Shift-Ctrl- [).

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 7

Use the Selection tool (V) to select all strokes.

Objects > extended appearances. Then, the object > expanded... to open the Expand dialog box. Review all objects, fills, and strokes, and click OK.

Then select Object> Expand..., but this time, check Fill and Stroke and click OK so that the group strokes can be expanded as well.

Now all strokes are shapes.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 8

With the extended shape still selected, let's apply a color to the gap.

Select the Live Paint Tool (K) to turn the selected object into a Live Paint Group. Then hover over the different parts highlighted and draw them in the color of your choice.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 9

Finally, let's apply a Symbol to the artwork so that we can add an instance of that symbol to the background of the artwork multiple times without actually adding an artwork group multiple times.

Open the Window > Symbols of the Symbols panel.

Select a circle with a group of dashed lines that wrap around. Copy, then paste to create a copy and shrink it slightly from the border by holding down the Shift key to constrain the scale.

Click the New Symbol button in the Symbols panel menu, or drag artwork into the panel. By default, the selected composition is an instance of the new symbol.

In the Symbol Options dialog box:

  • Select the symbol export type: Graphic
  • Symbol Type: Static symbol
  • Good
Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 10

To place our instance, select its thumbnail from the Symbols panel and select the Symbol Spray tool (Shift-S) to add a random instance around the background.

If you need to move the direction of the instance, use the Symbol Shifter Tool under the Symbol Sprayer Tool menu.

Learn AI software to make Tunisian patterns

Step 11

We're almost done. Go back to your design and adjust the colors and adjust the instance. Now you need to export the file with the following settings

  • Format: JPG
  • Check the use of artboards
  • outlet

Set the JPEG Options dialog box:

  • Color mode: CMYK
  • Quality: Highest quality
  • Fractionation rate: High (300ppi)
  • Good
