On May 17, at the 2024 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Conference, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Radio and Television jointly announced the launch of 5G cross-network roaming commercial promotion, marking a new stage of 5G cross-network roaming.
5G cross-network roaming means that when the operator does not have 5G network coverage, users can access the 5G network of other operators and continue to use 5G services. Carrying out 5G cross-network roaming can effectively improve the efficiency of network resource utilization, improve the level of 5G network coverage and users' 5G service experience in remote areas, and promote the high-quality development of the information and communication industry.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) resolutely implements the decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, and promotes the innovative application of 5G technology in China. On May 17, 2023, the world's first 5G cross-network roaming trial was launched in Xinjiang, with the number of roaming users, roaming data, and roaming call duration exceeding 34,000, 2,000GB, and 200 hours in a single day, effectively verifying the feasibility of 5G cross-network roaming on the existing network.
In order to benefit more people with the dividends of information technology development, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has launched the commercial promotion of 5G cross-network roaming on the basis of the previous work, and will guide relevant units to carry out 5G cross-network roaming commercialization on the basis of assessing roaming needs, and take effective regulatory measures to continuously optimize the quality of 5G cross-network roaming services to ensure the efficiency and stability of 5G cross-network roaming.
The commercial promotion of 5G cross-network roaming is conducive to enhancing 5G network service capabilities, enabling 5G to better empower thousands of industries, helping to cultivate new quality productivity, promoting the development of new industrialization, and making greater contributions to the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country.
