One postdoc and two Ph.D. positions available in Terrestrial Ecosystem Modeling

The Department of Ecology, Evolution, & Organismal Biology at Iowa State University invites applications for one postdoctoral and two Ph.D. student positions in the MacroSystems Ecology Lab (https://www.clu-lab.com/). Join a vibrant community of scientists specializing in diverse fields such as ecological modeling, soil science, biogeochemistry, hydrology, techno-economic and lifecycle assessment, political science, and computer science. Located in the livable and welcoming city of Ames, Iowa, this job opportunity offers an ideal blend of professional growth and a high-quality living environment. Please feel free to contact Dr. Chaoqun Lu ([email protected]) with your CV.

1) A postdoc position in modeling land-to-aquatic carbon and nutrient loading

This position focuses on the fusion of deep learning and process-based hydro-ecological modeling. The chosen candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary research team to forecast carbon and nutrient loss from land to aquatic systems. Specific responsibilities encompass large-scale data development and analysis, enhancing hybrid models, conducting simulations, evaluating models, performing uncertainty analyses, and preparing manuscripts. Collaborative support from experts in computer science, deep learning, and hydro-informatics will be provided under two ongoing NSF projects. Moreover, the selected individual will be encouraged to explore new research directions, such as participating in research proposal development. Additionally, they will assist in lab management and engage with both graduate and undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•A Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution in Ecosystem Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Ecohydrology, Agriculture, Forestry, or related fields with experience of terrestrial ecosystem modeling is required.

•Preference will be given to candidates with experience and background on biogeochemistry/hydrology modeling, deep learning, geospatial analysis, and computer programming.

•Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, record of research publications in refereed journals of high quality, and a demonstrated ability to function well within multidisciplinary teams are required.

Offer:

Salary ($52-55k) commensurate with training and research experience plus health benefit, mentoring by and collaboration with senior research personnel from a multidisciplinary team, office space and computer facilities, and coverage of research and related travel expenses. The postdoctoral research associate position is available for an immediate start (exact date negotiable).

2) One funded Ph.D. position in modeling direct + indirect N2O emissions from tile-drained agricultural landscape (Supported by USDA)

3) One funded Ph.D. position in rural flood prediction, using cross-scale water monitoring data synthesis and process-based eco-hydrological modeling (Supported by NSF)

The students will work with a research team to incorporate ground/satellite observations, experimental data, and socio-economic perspectives into a process-based geospatial modeling framework. The applicants should possess a degree in soil science, biogeochemistry, ecology, hydrology, earth system science, remote sensing, or related fields. Quantitative, coding skills and experience in terrestrial ecosystem/land surface modeling, remote sensing, and geospatial and/or statistical analysis are a plus.

Students may be recruited through the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Graduate Program (https://eeb.iastate.edu/) or the Environmental Science Graduate Program (https://enscigrad.iastate.edu/) at Iowa State University. We expect flexible enrollment for new graduate students from as early as Fall 2024.The required application documents include a cover letter (outlining their qualifications and research interest), a resume, transcripts, an English proficiency score (79-iBT, 550-PBT, 6.5-IELTS, or 53-PTE) for international applicants, and three reference letters

Any further query is welcome.
