"There are giant pandas everywhere, in the trees and on the ground, and I'm very happy to see them." Lang Shunyun, a Hong Kong girl from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, has been working as a keeper at the Shenshuping base in Wolong for five years, and this place has long since become her "second hometown".

Surrounded by mountains, the Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

Shenshuping Base is located in a canyon in Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, with beautiful forests and beautiful trees; The climate in the mountains is changeable, with the sun shining at sunrise and the clouds returning with a slight cool and rainy season, "Giant pandas usually go out to play when it's shady, and they rest indoors when it's hot." Lang Shunjun introduced.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lang Shunjun has loved giant pandas since he was a child, and when he grew up, he finally realized his childhood dream of becoming a panda keeper at Ocean Park Hong Kong, taking care of the giant panda "Ying Ying" presented to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by the central government. In 2015, Lang Shunyun accompanied "Yingying" back to her hometown in Wolong, Sichuan Province to carry out a breeding program, which was her first time in the mainland. At the Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, Lang Shunyun met Dong Chao, a staff member, and two young hearts came together because of the giant panda. In 2018, Lang Shunyun married in Wolong, Sichuan and became a daughter-in-law in Sichuan. Today, they have a 5-year-old son and form a happy family of three. "Originally, I accompanied 'Yingying' back on a blind date, but I didn't expect it to be a matchmaker for me." Every time she talks about this experience, Lang Shunjun feels that her fate with pandas has deepened.

Walking in the base of Shenshuping, as Lang Shunyun said, giant pandas can be seen everywhere: adult pandas are comfortably gnawing on bamboo, and panda cubs are playing with each other for a while, climbing up to trees for a while, and having "sweet dreams" in a down-to-earth manner. The pandas' "leisurely contentment" would not have been possible without the support of Hong Kong, about 1,900 kilometres from Sichuan, where the Hong Kong SAR government built their base.

On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 8 earthquake struck Wenchuan, and the Hetaoping base of the Panda Center, which is more than 20 kilometers away from Yingxiu Town, the epicenter, was also severely damaged: the vegetation of the giant panda habitat in the low-altitude area was destroyed, the base was completely destroyed, and the road to the outside world was seriously damaged.

Lang Shunjun fed the giant panda "Sen Sen" carrots, apples, wowotou and other foods.

Mu Shijie, a witness to the Wenchuan earthquake and a keeper at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, said: "When the earthquake struck, my house collapsed. As soon as I settled my family, I went to see the pandas in the reserve, and they were all terrified. Some hid in the corner, some climbed into the trees and hummed. In order to ensure the safety of the giant pandas, the captive giant pandas at the Wolong Hetaoping Base of the Panda Center had to "leave their hometowns" and were scattered in seven or eight wildlife parks and urban zoos across the country.

In order for the giant pandas to return to their homeland, in April 2011, the construction of the Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, which was built with the assistance of the Hong Kong SAR government, officially started. Wolong's geographical location is remote, is the Wenchuan earthquake disaster area, coupled with the construction process of mudslides, landslides are frequent, the construction environment is quite difficult. Under such difficult conditions, Hong Kong's experts and technical consultants took the risk to stay in Wolong for a long time to investigate, which made the staff of the Wolong base very moved.

On May 11, 2016, the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center's Wolong Shenshuping Base - China Giant Panda Garden was successfully opened, marking the completion of the post-disaster reconstruction work of Hong Kong's assistance to Wolong. In appreciation of Hong Kong's help, the Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda is permanently open to Hong Kong citizens free of charge.

Chen Xiangxiang, a conservationist at Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World, waves to the giant panda "Tingting". Tingting, a giant panda from the Wolong base, was transferred to Chimelong Wildlife World in Guangzhou in 2008 due to the Wenchuan earthquake.

The giant panda keepers at the Shenshuping base have rich experience in breeding and breeding, and often have to go to zoos across the country to communicate and guide the breeding of giant pandas. In July last year, Lang Shunjun came to Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World on a business trip and met the giant panda "Tingting", also from Wolong, Sichuan. Affected by the Wenchuan earthquake, three-year-old "Tingting" and four other giant pandas were urgently transferred from the Hetaoping base to Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World for cultivation.

"'Tingting' came by plane on June 26, 2008. At that time, all of our staff were holding banners to welcome them at the entrance of Panda Paradise. Chen Xiangxiang, a panda keeper at Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World, remembers the experience vividly, "We also built a Zizhu Garden for the giant pandas from Wenchuan to live in. In fact, it is not easy to breed the "Wenchuan Giant Panda", Sichuan and Guangzhou are thousands of miles apart, and the climate is also very different. In order to make "Tingting", who was still a young child, adapt to the hot and humid environment in Lingnan as soon as possible and reduce the stress reaction caused by the unfamiliar environment, the breeders also worked hard. In addition to restoring the local temperature environment in Sichuan and taking care of them 24 hours a day, the local breeders from Guangdong also specially learned the Sichuan dialect, so that "Tingting" gradually let down her guard and integrate into the new environment of Guangzhou.

As the Guangdong base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, since 2013, Chimelong has bred a total of 7 litters and 10 cubs, including the world's first giant panda triplets, and successfully bred the second generation of children in South China. The Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda built with the assistance of Hong Kong has successfully bred more than 100 giant pandas since its opening. The love affair of the Sichuan giant panda in the Greater Bay Area continues to heat up.
