On May 9, at the launching ceremony and the first lecture tour of the outstanding contestants of the Sichuan Provincial University Youth Education Competition, Zhu Guiquan, deputy director of the Department of Head and Neck Oncology Surgery of West China School of Stomatology (West China Hospital of Stomatology) of Sichuan University, was explaining the characteristics of facial paralysis at the base of the skull to the audience with easy-to-understand language and rich and vivid cases. As the first prize of the provincial competition and the first prize of the national competition of the medical group of the 6th University Young Teacher Teaching Competition, Zhu Guiquan integrated value guidance, knowledge transfer and ability training into the curriculum design, carefully designed the course of "Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery", formed a theoretical teaching method characterized by "systematic thinking ability training" and a practical teaching method characterized by "clinical competency training", and cultivated the clinical thinking logic of students' diagnosis and treatment of positive nerve palsy.
"Today's students have access to a lot of online resources, and they can learn a lot without attending offline lectures." Zhu Guiquan believes that the important value of offline teaching is the interaction between teachers and students and the participation of students. In just 20 minutes of class, he designed a number of interactive links including case analysis of facial paralysis, facial nerve operation applet, case discussion, and quizzes, so that students could truly grasp the clinical characteristics of facial nerve damage at different nodes and the key points of distinguishing central and peripheral facial paralysis.
Due to the various clinical features of facial nerve anatomy and physiological function repair and facial nerve damage, students' clinical practice ability is particularly important. In order to provide students with more opportunities to operate, Zhu Guiquan and the teachers of the teaching and research group innovatively explored the ladder point evaluation system. "Students who meet certain points requirements can get practical opportunities under the guidance of teachers, which can not only standardize students' usual medical behaviors, improve their clinical foundation, but also increase students' enthusiasm and ultimately promote the improvement of clinical work." Zhu Guiquan introduced. "If a teacher does not do well in clinical practice, then the classroom will be dry and not brilliant; If the scientific research is not done well, it will be difficult for the classroom to be high-level, innovative and challenging. In Zhu Guiquan's view, teaching, clinical and scientific research complement each other, and an excellent medical faculty member needs to have comprehensive ability in medical education and research, and he is required by such standards.
In November last year, Zhu Guiquan, with the assistance of a surgical robot, completed the resection of a patient's tumor, which lasted only one hour, with little bleeding, less trauma and a short recovery period. This is also the first case of oral and maxillofacial surgery completed with the assistance of a domestic surgical robot, marking the first breakthrough in the application of domestic surgical robots in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and an important milestone in the development of domestic high-end medical equipment. "In the past, oral and maxillofacial tumor surgery required longer incisions to achieve a better surgical visibility, resulting in large trauma and visible scarring." Zhu Guiquan said that in order to solve this clinical problem, the team has been deeply engaged in the field of minimally invasive treatment of head and neck tumors, and has decomposed in detail the steps of parotid gland, submandibular gland and cervical lymphatic dissection under complete laparoscopy, and proposed the "seven-step method" of parotid gland and submandibular gland laparoscopic surgery, which has been published in international journals and promoted in dozens of units in China to benefit more patients. A few days ago, Zhu Guiquan won the National May Day Labor Medal, which made him feel that the burden on his shoulders was heavier, and the responsibility and mission were greater. Talking about his future plans, he said that he will continue to take root in the front line of teaching, clinical and scientific research, do more exploration and research in the field of minimally invasive treatment of head and neck tumors, and at the same time pass on his experience and knowledge to students, and strive to contribute more to the development of stomatology in mainland China.
