In order to implement the national strategy of actively responding to the aging of the population and further promote the development of the pension industry, in October 2019, the Ministry of Education and other 7 departments jointly issued a document to encourage and guide ordinary undergraduate colleges and universities to set up pension-related majors such as home economics and geriatrics. In September 2020, Shanghai University of Engineering Science and Shandong Women's University became the first batch of undergraduate colleges in China to set up this major and enroll students that year, and this year the two universities welcomed nearly 100 undergraduate graduates.

What are the career paths for this graduating class? What kind of talents does the undergraduate program in pension service management cultivate? What will young people do in the future pension industry? With these questions, the reporter interviewed teachers and students of the two universities.

Professional counterpart

Students enter the industry "silky".

When filling in the college entrance examination in 2020, Liu Jiayun chose the major of "pension service management", which was the first undergraduate student in the country that year. With interest in this new major, she filled in the application and was admitted to the School of Management of Shanghai University of Engineering Science. After nearly 4 years of professional study and internship practice, she is about to join the General Affairs Department of Shanghai Pension Service Association.

In the past 4 years, Liu Jiayun's professional learning has been gradual, first understanding the general situation of the pension industry, and then systematically learning the relevant policies and regulations of the industry, the operation and management skills of pension institutions, etc., and you can also take elective courses according to personal interests.

Liu Jiayun was deeply impressed by the sophomore professional course "Medical and Long-term Care Insurance" because the content of this course was "advancing with the times". She said: "Shanghai has been piloting the implementation of 'long-term care insurance (medical and long-term care insurance for short term care insurance – editor's note) since the beginning of 2018, and its system and system are still in the process of being established and improved. During the class, many teaching materials had not yet been systematically compiled and printed, and the teacher sorted out the pilot situation of relevant policies across the country and the latest research in the academic community, and some teachers asked students to participate in a research project on the demand for 'long-term care insurance' in Shanghai. ”

In addition, the teachers of professional courses will "match" students, so that students can enter the elderly care institution for internship from the beginning of their freshman year, starting from the basic nursing position, and gradually transition to the operation management position, so as to understand the operation mode of the entire institution. At first, Liu Jiayun's impression of a pension institution was "mid-to-high-end positioning" and "good facilities and equipment", but after the on-site visit, she had a deeper understanding: "The service content and management methods provided by the institution are essentially designed around the needs of the elderly, not just the facilities and equipment are 'luxurious'. ”

During the summer vacations of her sophomore and junior years, Liu Jiayun went to a neighborhood comprehensive service center and a private non-enterprise unit specializing in meal assistance services for internships, respectively, and learned more about different positions and institutions. For Liu Jiayun, finding an internship and a job is relatively smooth, "whether I am looking for it myself or the unit recommended by the school, when the other party sees that my major is pension service management, they will first feel novel, and then think that this major is very appropriate."

The reason why Liu Jiayun chose to intern and work at the Shanghai Pension Service Association is because she likes this all-encompassing and full of opportunities. "Working in this association, I can get in touch with more than 1,000 member units of different types and scales, and I can also understand the front-line research data at the symposium, listen to the opinions of experts and teachers in the industry, and intuitively feel the development trend of the city's pension service industry. In the future, I may have the opportunity to go to a bigger platform. ”

On March 19, Shanghai University of Engineering Science held a special employment internship job fair for senior service management. Mao Jiajie, human resources director of the Shanghai branch of Taikang Home, a pension institution, told reporters that he had learned that the first batch of undergraduates graduated from this major in this university this year, and the scene on the day was more "hot" than he expected: the jobs and opportunities provided by the company were far greater than the number of the first graduates of the major; Students from the first to the third year of this major and master's students in non-elderly care majors such as public administration and social work are also curious to participate in the job fair, so that they can understand the recruitment needs of enterprises in the market earlier.

Luo Juan, deputy dean of the School of Management of Shanghai University of Engineering Science, told reporters that among the first 32 undergraduate graduates, most of the students will enter the pension industry, except for a few students who choose to go abroad for further study and continue to study in the field of pension.

According to Chen Shujun, a teacher of pension service management at the School of Sociology and Law of Shandong Women's University, among the 64 undergraduate graduates in the first batch, several students chose to take the public examination or interdisciplinary postgraduate examination, and the remaining about ninety percent of the students are expected to stay in the pension industry. On May 9, the school held a double selection meeting for employment, and 35 companies participated in the recruitment, providing more than 400 jobs. About 300 students came to the scene, in addition to more than 60 graduates of the first class of senior care service management, students from other grades of the major, health service and management, and social work students participated.

New majors need to be built up

Also keep up with the times

Luo Juan told reporters that Shanghai University of Engineering Science began to conduct research on pension services around 2010, especially the research on pension security, which laid the foundation for the establishment of pension service management majors.

At the beginning of its establishment, the new major was clearly positioned, that is, under the category of public management, taking into account the attributes of business administration, and the goal was to cultivate three types of talents: first, professional managers of pension institutions, that is, future directors of nursing homes and general managers of pension groups; The second is the community pension planner, who is responsible for allocating and optimizing pension resources in the sub-district office or community pension institution to meet the pension needs of the elderly in the jurisdiction; The third is personal pension consultants.

Before applying for a new major, Luo Juan found in the survey that the specialized pension service and management major focuses more on the service level, mainly training nursing staff for elderly care institutions; The main goal of the undergraduate senior care service management major is to cultivate talents who can be competent in the operation and management of elderly care institutions. Therefore, in the four-year undergraduate training plan, students need to have an in-depth understanding of the brand operation, long-term development planning and related policies of elderly care institutions.

Chen Shujun introduced, Shandong Women's University in 2015 began to run elderly service and management (later renamed "wisdom health pension service and management") specialist major, the annual enrollment scale of about 150 people, in 2020 after the application for approval of the undergraduate major of pension service management, and the national first-class undergraduate major construction point social work, health service and management and other majors to form a "health care professional group", adhere to interdisciplinary, digital empowerment, relying on Shandong Province Modern Industry College of health care industry, It has continuously strengthened the integration of industry and education and the reform of the symbiotic talent training model, won the Shandong Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, and continuously improved the quality of talent training.

In the formulation of the training program, the professional team of senior service management of Shandong Women's University has conducted in-depth research on the job requirements, adhered to the demand-oriented, clarified the graduation requirements, and continuously revised the talent training program. Chen Shujun told reporters that the teaching team of this major is composed of teachers from the fields of management, social work, traditional Chinese medicine, nursing, food and nutrition engineering, etc.; Due to the rapid development of the pension industry, in order to meet the needs of the industry, the teacher team has maintained long-term communication with a number of pension enterprises and academic experts, and will also invite students who have achieved a middle-level position in the pension enterprise after graduating from the junior college to return to school.

Chen Shujun said that after four years of training, the pension service management major has been adjusted to a relatively stable stage. In terms of professional characteristics, the first is to pay special attention to the cultivation of students' practical ability, build a provincial experimental training center, lead students into enterprise practice in stages and themes, and invite cooperative enterprises to bring projects into the classroom; Second, it pays attention to the cultivation of international vision, and has carried out diversified cooperation with universities and institutions in Germany, Japan, Australia and other countries; The third is to pay attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive literacy, such as artistic literacy, digital intelligence literacy, health literacy, etc.

"We will tell students that older people also have a variety of pursuits, including the enjoyment of the beauty of life on a spiritual level. Some pension companies have proposed that they need pension architects who can design the space very beautifully, so they have set up 'life aesthetics' courses and elective courses such as flower arrangement, tea art, calligraphy, and literature appreciation. Chen Shujun told reporters that in the past four years, the number of students enrolled in this major has been increasing year by year; In the future, the college hopes to promote the construction of a master's degree program in pension service management, on the one hand, so that the discipline system will be more complete and graduates can be admitted to graduate school; On the other hand, it can cultivate more and more high-end professionals.

Pension is a "sunrise industry"

Young people can make a big difference

When it comes to future career planning, Lin Jiahua, a graduate of Shandong Women's University majoring in pension service management, has a clear goal: "Assessment is an important part of elderly care services, and I hope to deepen the direction of assessment and become an elderly ability assessor, and I can engage in assessment full-time or part-time in the future." This profession can measure and evaluate the ability level of the elderly, evaluate the elderly care institutions, and guide the process of home adaptation for the elderly. With four years of professional study, coupled with internship experience in Beijing and Fujian, she believes that the ability assessor for the elderly is a profession with greater market demand and more standardization in the future.

Lin Jiahua's classmate Liu Xuehao is currently interning in the newly opened community of the elderly care service brand "Taikang Home" in Qingdao, and his position is a cultural and recreational teacher, who is responsible for leading the elderly to carry out various activities on a daily basis. Liu Xuehao once studied intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting in Yantai, and with this specialty, he opened a paper-cutting course for the elderly. He said: "I think the pension industry is a 'sunrise industry' with good development prospects. My short-term plan is to go deep into the industry, learn more skills and gain experience; The medium-term plan is based on the needs of the development of the industry, serving as a management post and having its own team. ”

In the field of education, with the deepening of the understanding of the pension industry in the society, the major of pension service management has also attracted more students to apply for the examination. Luo Juan told reporters that in the past four years, the number of students enrolled in pension management majors is increasing year by year, and the proportion of students admitted to the first choice is also rising. "In the last class, there was a sophomore who came back from the army, and after returning to school, she transferred from the finance major to the pension service management major, because she felt that this major was very new, and she also wanted to contribute to the pension industry, and she was confident that she could do a good job. Now she is playing a very active role in the class. ”

Not only that, in September this year, Shanghai University of Engineering Science will open a "micro-major" for all students and students of alliance schools in the southwest area of Shanghai on the basis of the undergraduate major of pension service management, and open 8 courses around "life and health management", and students will complete the course in two semesters and obtain a certificate, which is conducive to the employment of the corresponding major in the future.

In Luo Juan's view, with the arrival of the "silver wave", the industrial chain of the pension industry has become longer, and all areas of social production in the future will be subdivided for the elderly again, "for example, in terms of consumer goods, the hot sale of elderly shoes is an example." She told the students in class that in the future, in the fields of education, cultural tourism, finance, insurance, medical equipment, digital platforms, and residential renovation for the elderly, "there will be room for young people to show their strengths" in every link of the pension industry chain.
