Located in Seoul, South Korea, MMCA Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is one of Korea's most important cultural landmarks, showcasing modern art and exploring contemporary art. Originally established in 1969, the museum has branches in Seoul, Gwangju, Deoksugung Palace and Cheongju.
MMCA's architectural design blends modern and historical elements, notably the Seoul Pavilion, which is located on the site of a historic military command center. In 2009, the Korean government decided to build a modern art museum on the site, with the aim of emphasizing the role of culture in modern society. Through an international competition, the project was finally won by a renowned architectural firm. The design cleverly utilizes the old military building as the main entrance to the museum, while preserving some historical buildings from the Joseon Dynasty, making the space a bridge between history and modernity.
The museum's flexible interior features multiple exhibition halls and open courtyards designed to facilitate interaction between the viewer and the artworks. The exhibition space not only showcases the works of domestic and foreign artists to the public, but also hosts a variety of educational and cultural events dedicated to promoting the public's understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary art.
MMCA is also a hub for art education and research in Korea, with a rich educational program, including professional training courses for curators, museum staff, art teachers, and university students.
