The ramming king first appeared, showing his skills

  The task of the Shanxi Railway Construction Corps is to assist the 8718 unit of the Railway Corps in building the railway from Beijing to Yuanping, that is, to undertake the construction of the line in Shanxi Province from Jiyizhuang in Fanzhi County in the west to Yuncailing in Lingqiu County in the east, as well as railway stations along the way.

  The Jingyuan Line is an important war-ready railway and a lifeline for the defense of the capital Beijing. It starts from Beijing Bajiao Village in the east, can be connected with the subway, west to Yuanping and Tongpu line, the altitude rises sharply from 200 meters to 1800 meters, in the territory of 226 kilometers that it crosses the Taihang Mountains, there are 116 caves, the total length is 76 kilometers, of which, the longest cave is 7 kilometers, and can be concealed by more than a dozen trains during air raids. In this way, once the war broke out, the trains in Beijing almost ran from the cave to Shanxi, and went directly to the rear of the southwest through Taiyuan, Xi'an, and Baocheng Railway.

  Our work begins with the construction of the roadbed, and the soil is taken from 20 meters away from the outside of the roadbed, and each cushion is 40 centimeters before being flattened and tamped. Compacted to about 30 centimeters for testing, and the density meets the requirements before padding the new soil. This is a very simple task, but the only tools we use are shovels, pickaxes, flat carts, large baskets, stone rammers, small flat carts and dump trolleys. Small flat carts and small trolleys are our most advanced tools, but the number is not much, there are only two in each row, and the utilization rate is not high, the roadbed is more than two meters, and the flat car and small trolley are not as convenient as lifting the basket, and the roadbed we build is as high as seven or eight meters, or even more than ten meters, therefore, flat cars and trolleys are mostly used for loading and unloading vehicles. Due to the primitive and rudimentary tools, although the working hours are long and the labor intensity is high, the progress of the project is very slow.

  In May 1970, the international situation became increasingly tense, and in addition to the continuous border conflicts between China and the Soviet Union and China and Mongolia, the war between the United States in Indochina was also escalating. On May 20, Chairman Mao Zedong issued a statement entitled "The People of the World Unite to Defeat the American Aggressors and All Their Stooges" in order to support the struggle against the United States in the three Indochina countries (Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam). On May 21, in order to implement the spirit of the "May 2O" statement, the headquarters of the First Division of the Railway Construction Corps held a pledge meeting of "40 days of war, July 1st gifts" in Shahe Town, the headquarters of the Second Regiment.

  After company commander Xie Guangyao and instructor Zhao Chungui returned to the company's station, Dongsanquan, they immediately convened a meeting of squad and platoon commanders to study and speed up the progress of the project, create high quality, and win high yields. After Xie Guangyao conveyed the grand occasion of the pledge meeting, he continued: Starting next week, the regiment headquarters will require all companies to report the progress of the project every day, and the whole regiment will issue a briefing every three days to sort the amount of earthwork completed by each company. The regiment headquarters should circulate a notice of criticism on the company that has been ranked last for two consecutive times, and if it has been ranked last for three consecutive times, the company commander and instructor must personally go to the regiment headquarters for inspection.

  Then, Zhao Chungui announced the company's decision: starting next week, there will be no morning exercises, the work time will be changed to 6:00 in the morning, breakfast and lunch will be sent to the construction site by the cooking class, and the work will be finished at 7:00 in the evening. In the event of a battle, the time of work and the end of work will be set separately, and the political study on Wednesday afternoon will be changed to Sunday afternoon. In order to strengthen leadership, the company decided to set up a group of cadres and appointed Zhang Baoping as the leader of the sixth squad and Li Yirong as the deputy leader of the third squad......

  After the "May 2O", although the company extended its working hours, the progress of the project was still slow, and the fifth company repeatedly lagged behind in the ranking of the regimental headquarters. In order to reverse the passive situation, Xie Guangyao and Zhao Chungui held a meeting of squad leaders again to discuss countermeasures. Xie Guangyao said straight to the point: Today's meeting is a Zhuge Liang meeting, please work together to solve the problem of slow progress of the project.

  Statistician You Tao analyzed: In this stage of construction, what affects the progress of the project is the soil layer compaction. The corps equipped the company with only a few small square rammers and octagonal rammers, which were limited in weight and had to be beaten three times to meet the standard. The key now is that the tamping lags behind the padding. After a layer of soil padding, tamping begins, three times ramming is not enough to pad the soil, everyone is in a hurry and can't do it. Let the material staff take a few more rammed back, and the progress of the project can be accelerated.

  Zhao Yousheng, a material clerk, said in embarrassment: I went to the regiment headquarters several times to urge, but to no avail, the regiment headquarters said that all companies have the same requirements, and the regiment has organized procurement, but so far it has not been known.

  After pondering for a long time, I suggested: I have an immature idea to make my own rammer. In fact, the structure of the rammer is very simple, that is, a stone is tied to several pieces of wood, as long as you can find a suitable stone, it is feasible to make a large rammer.

  Zeng Zhaoqing, the third squad leader, said: There are stones in the river beach, large and small, with different shapes, we can go and have a look.

  Xie Guangyao made a final decision: Solving the tamping problem is the consensus of everyone, let's walk on two legs: on the one hand, the material staff continues to urge the regiment department to procure; On the other hand, the third and fourth classes took advantage of tomorrow and Sunday to mobilize everyone to find raw materials to make their own ramming.

  On the morning of the next day, Zeng Zhaoqing and Zhang Jinfang, the leader of the fourth squad, led seven or eight people from the third and fourth squads to find the rammed stone. We walked around the dry river beach and couldn't find the right stones. The stone to be rammed should have at least one plane, and the weight is comparable, preferably about 1,000 catties, and at the same time, it should be able to tie the rammer bar to facilitate lifting. There are a lot of stones in the river beach, and there are also more than 1,000 catties of large stones, but the shape is mostly oval, lacks a plane, and it is difficult to bind the rammer.

  When I was disappointed, I suddenly remembered that when I was in Fanzhi County, I passed many cemeteries along the way, and there were many offering tables and stone tablets in the cemeteries. He said: It would be good to have an ancient cemetery nearby, and the stone offering table and stone tablet can be used to make rammed stones.

  Zhang Jinfang patted his head and said: Yes! From here, head south up the hill, and there is a cemetery on the road to Mazhuang. So, we crossed the road south and went up the mountain. This is an ancient cemetery, and there are several stone carved archways in the cemetery, which are tall and eye-catching. Many of the tombs have stone offering tables in front of them, and some have tombstones. However, these tombstones have been smashed when the "four olds" were broken, and the walls are broken, and only the stele pedestal remains; The offering table was also overturned and staggered.

  We found a large pedestal, nearly a meter long, about 70 centimeters wide and 60 centimeters high, half buried in the earth. Zeng Zhaoqing used a shovel to dig out the surrounding soil, and everyone loosened the stele base with a crowbar, and then pulled it out of the soil by shaking it from hand to side. There are two concave stone grooves above the two sides of this stele, which can be used to tie the ramming bar, and the bottom is flat, which is the most ideal rammed stone.

  Zhang Jinfang skillfully drove the wheel, and it took a lot of effort for everyone to move it to the flat car. When a group of people hugged each other and happily pulled the stele back to the station, it was already 1 o'clock in the afternoon. After lunch, everyone didn't take a break, and with the assistance of Zhao Yousheng, they tied up and tamped. We found four logs with a thick bowl mouth and a length of more than three meters, first tied two logs along the stone trough with iron wire, and then fixed the other two logs together in the shape of a "well" with these two logs, and a big ramming was done.

  The next morning, Zeng Zhaoqing led the third class of soldiers to pull the big ram to the construction site with a flat car, and the third and fourth classes of soldiers joined forces to play the big rammer, because such a heavy rammer requires 24 people to operate, that is, three people at each end of the rammer bar - only one squad of soldiers is far from enough. The key to playing the big ram is that the action must be neat, otherwise it will not only be unstable to lift the tamper, but also easy to hurt people. The weight of the ramming is amazing, everyone has to do their best every time they lift, and the rhythm of shouting "one, two......" in the past is difficult to use for ramming. As a result, shouting trumpets has become a new profession among iron construction soldiers.

  The invention of the big ram has greatly improved the work efficiency. The 40 cm soil layer, as long as the ramming is smashed once, the density is absolutely qualified. Moreover, the area of the ramming is large, and the progress of the fight is fast. In the past, tamping lagged behind the padding, and now the cushioning cannot catch up with the tamping. As soon as the rammer first showed his skills, the progress of our company's project progressed by leaps and bounds, and the regiment headquarters was worried about the quality of the project, so it specially sent technicians to conduct inspections. The test results fully meet the quality requirements.

  In the regimental headquarters briefing that week, our regiment and five companies actually put a "satellite". The Fifth Company was praised by the circular, and the regimental headquarters specially came to take pictures of our rammer, and they called our company's big ramming "ramming king" and promoted it throughout the regiment. As a result, the companies have come to visit and learn from the experience, this kind of big ramming soon spread in the companies, and the small ramming was gradually eliminated, but it was occasionally used a few times in some corner areas where it was inconvenient to use the big rammer.

Men and women match, work without getting tired

  The use of large ramming not only promoted the joint labor cooperation between squads, but also brought about new changes in the labor combination of the company. A total of 25 people are needed to beat the rammer, and each class only needs about 15 people, therefore, the ramming must be combined with two classes, that is, the first class cooperates with the second class, the third class cooperates with the fourth class, and the fifth class cooperates with the sixth class. However, for the female fighters of the third platoon, it was very difficult even if the three squads of the whole platoon joined forces to fight the big rammer.

  As a result, the company commander decided to divide the three women's classes into six parts, each of which was assigned to a men's class to form six work teams. Qiao Xiaorong, Gui Fen, Wang Ruiyun, Yin Erqing, Wei Suyun, Han Lun, Hou Lingxiang and other female fighters from our third and eighth classes formed three teams, the captain was Zeng Zhaoqing, the leader of the third squad, and the vice captain was Qiao Xiaorong and me, the eighth squad leader.

  Soon, a feat by the fighters of the second operation team brought about a new change in the combination of tamping. The second team selected 12 male fighters and 4 female fighters who were strong and strong, and they actually started a big ramming, and they finished a layer of cushion soil. This action was undoubtedly a challenge to the teams, and everyone followed suit. However, the company commander and instructor were afraid of tiring the female soldiers, so they explicitly forbade the female soldiers to play big ramming, and the two male squads still cooperated to ram, but the pattern of 16 people tamping was basically fixed.

  Since then, I have withdrawn from the tamping team.

  There is a gravel road along the south bank of the Hutuo River, the road is not wide, and the road surface is not good, but it is the traffic artery in this area. There is a large open area about five or six kilometers west along this highway from Dongsanquan, which the locals call Jinshanpu, which is the site of the Jinshanpu Station of the Keihara Railway. The amount of earthwork for the construction of Jinshanpu station is large, and it is mainly undertaken by the railway soldiers. Dozens of bulldozers of a company of Unit 8718 worked for more than a month, and the roadbed began to take shape. The remaining earthworks that are relatively scattered and inconvenient for mechanized operations require the railway construction corps to complete them in a surprise attack. Therefore, the commander of the first regiment decided to send three companies to organize the battle of Jinshanpu, including our five companies.

  The construction site of our company is a large passage for bulldozers to enter and exit, the roadbed gap is larger, and the amount of earthwork is the largest, especially in this area, it is very inconvenient to take soil, the bulldozer has crushed the soft crops into hard soil blocks, and the soil must be loosened with a pickaxe first, and then it can be loaded into baskets, which is a problem that we have never encountered since the construction of the Jingyuan Railway.

  It takes more than an hour to walk from Dongsanquan to Jinshanpu, so from the beginning of the general battle, we start work at 4:00 in the morning and finish at 8:00 in the evening, and breakfast and lunch are eaten on the construction site.

  On July 12, the whole regiment held a swearing-in meeting at Daying Station. Commander Cui Fengqi of the XPCC personally attended the meeting and made an important speech. He proposed that the "five races" should be carried out in the general battle, that is, the revolution, the enthusiasm, the unity, the progress, and the safety. Since then, the work and end time of our five companies have been advanced and postponed by an hour, and some teams have even taken the initiative to go to work at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning.

  However, the difficulty of soil extraction directly affected the progress of the project of Wulian. On the first day of the battle, despite the great efforts of the soldiers, the pickaxes cut several pieces, but the roadbed was not much mated. On the way back from work in the evening, Zeng Zhaoqing discussed ways with me while walking. After briefly reviewing the work of the day, I said: Now that the soil is the key, we can readjust the labor and let the strong labor go to the basket.

  Zeng Zhaoqing pondered for a moment and said: This is a method, but it is necessary to improve the method of taking soil. The pit can be dug deeper, so that the soft soil below can be taken first, the hard soil layer can be elevated, and then smashed down with a steel drill and sledgehammer.

  I also think this is possible. Back at the station, we went to the materials room and received a few sledgehammers and a few steel drills. The next day, Zeng Zhaoqing personally led several strong soldiers to load the basket. We dug the soil pit to a depth of nearly two meters at a time, first dug out the soil under the hard soil layer, and then arranged several steel drills on it into a fan shape and smashed it down at the same time. The hard soil layer collapsed in large chunks, and the soldiers smashed the large clods into small pieces and put them in baskets, and the speed of soil extraction was much faster.

  The weather was really hot, and the July sun hung in the sky like a giant brazier. The soldiers took soil, carried baskets, pushed carts, and rammed under the "braziers", sweating like rain, and the worst thing was that there was no shade nearby, and they could only be exposed to the scorching sun during breaks. A soldier of the third class saw that someone was taking a dip under the hollowed-out hard soil layer, so he said to everyone: Let's take the soil in a planned way, hollow out the soil below before resting, and then smash the hard soil layer after resting, so that everyone can enjoy the shade below during the break.

  From then on, during the break, we sat in the shade of the soldiers' own creation, resting, drinking, telling jokes, and singing. This advanced method was soon replicated in other teams as well. Everyone sat together and sang and sang to each other. In the loud singing, the emotions of the warriors were fully vented, and fatigue, troubles, and sorrows were thrown into Java.

  The hardships of the battle of Jinshanpu are also reflected in the way of work and work. The soldiers carried baskets, shovels, and flat carts, and it took nearly three hours to make a round trip. When I arrived at the construction site in the morning, I wanted to rest before I started working; After a tiring day at night, I was exhausted and had to walk back with my tools. Zeng Zhaoqing saw this in his eyes and was anxious, and he suggested to Xie Guangyao several times: stay at the construction site at night to watch the tools, so as to reduce the burden of the soldiers of the whole company.

  Xie Guangyao considered that it was not good to rest at night, and his body could not bear to continue working during the day, so he never agreed.

  On July 13, Zeng Zhaoqing made up his mind to stay at the construction site. When he had breakfast at the construction site, he discussed with the cooking class that he would send two more people for lunch, and he would guard the construction site with Yin Wensheng in the evening. Before finishing work in the evening, Zeng Zhaoqing made another request to the company commander and took out the prepared dinner to show his determination.   Since the big rammer was changed from 24 people to 16 people, it was the first time I had tamped it. Every time you lift, you have to use all your strength. When a layer of mat soil is halfway compacted, the horn of the break sounds. The rammed warriors walked down the roadbed one after another, some went to find water to drink, others to find a place to rest.

  Yin Wensheng beckoned to me: Go down and drink some water.

  After everyone left, I felt very tired, and thought that I would have to ram in half an hour, and I had to hurry up and recharge. I was on all fours and lying on my back on the rammers and rammers. Several fighters pulled Ren Yuanyuan's arm and dragged it out, but they didn't succeed in pulling it several times.   Zeng Zhaoqing said that there were still people in the mound, and everyone struggled to dig the big mound next to it, which was two or three cubic meters long, and there were several soldiers buried in it, and no one knew about it. Someone brought a shovel and prepared to shovel the soil.

  At this time, Xie Guangyao ran to the scene of the collapse out of breath to direct the rescue. He asked the female fighters to step back, and the male fighters took turns digging the soil in several groups, and at the same time, he sent Zhang Baoping to lead two soldiers to stop the car on the highway and prepare to transport the wounded.

  After a while, Qiao Xiaorong was dug out of the mound by the soldiers and was already unconscious.

  At this time, a large truck stopped at the construction site of the fifth company, and the soldiers carried the four wounded into the car and sent them to the division hospital in Shahe Town.

  Judging from the rescue situation at the scene, the two male fighters were slightly injured, and they were dragged into the car by the soldiers; The two female fighters were already in a semi-conscious state, and were carried onto the car by the soldiers on improvised stretchers made of lifting bars and ropes, and were not dragged by them during the rescue. These details, which no one cared about at the time, actually brought completely different consequences to the lives of the four warriors.

  The division hospital and the regimental headquarters of the Second Regiment are both in the middle school of Shahe Town. The hospital is in the backyard, occupying more than a dozen bungalows, and the regimental headquarters is in the front yard. We carried the four wounded from room to room for examination without stopping. Outwardly, none of the four wounded had any external injuries, but what about the internal injuries? We don't know anything.

  The technical force of the division hospital was weak and the equipment was poor, and the doctors were almost helpless in the face of four seriously injured patients who suffered lumbar vertebra fractures and lost sensation in their lower limbs. For two days, the doctor's only treatment was an infusion to reduce inflammation. The division commander immediately decided to hire a famous doctor from Taiyuan to help the wounded.

  Doctors in Taiyuan and the families of the wounded rushed to Shahe Town at the same time. After consultation, the doctors concluded that the wounded had to be operated on the spot immediately due to excessive chest pressure caused by lumbar vertebra fractures, which was life-threatening.

  The operation saved the lives of the wounded in a timely manner. The doctor said: After the accident, due to the illegal rescue on the spot, especially the lumbar vertebrae were bent and twisted when carrying the two male soldiers, the spinal cord injury was aggravated, and it was likely that he would be paralyzed for life.

  Four months later, the wounded were transferred to Shanghai for a second operation. After more than a year of treatment, Qiao Xiaorong and Gui Fen basically recovered, and both of them were later assigned jobs, while Zeng Zhaoqing and Ren Yuan were paralyzed for life, unconscious from the waist down, incontinent, and unable to take care of themselves.

  Unit 8718's handling of the accident concluded that the soldiers caused a landslide accident while building a combat-ready railway, and Unit 8718 covered all expenses during hospital treatment; Zeng Zhaoqing and Ren Yuanyuan's medical expenses and living expenses after that, the army paid 3,600 yuan per person for a one-time settlement. The basis for the liquidation of the 3,600 yuan was: according to the living standard of the people of Taiyuan City at that time, the living expenses of 10 yuan per person per month and 20 yuan for treatment were 360 yuan per year; It is said that according to the medical conditions at that time, the survival time of paraplegic patients generally did not exceed 10 years, and the total cost was 3,600 yuan based on 10 years.
