Jason Houghton, known as the "heaviest man in Britain", died of health problems just around the corner of his 34th birthday, mainly due to organ failure caused by extreme obesity, according to family confirmation. Horton's family, Lysa, recalls that although doctors have taken him back from death many times, this time the doctors were powerless.
Due to serious health issues, Horton has been bedridden at home, completely dependent on NHS staff to take care of his daily life. He lived in a fortified bungalow with custom-made furniture.
Horton mentioned in the interview that the death of his father when he was three years old had a profound impact on him, and he once said that he would monitor his eating habits if his father was still around. While at school, Horton began to comfort himself with food due to bullying from his classmates, which became the starting point for his later health problems.
In 2012, his mother died of cancer, after which Horton's diet became even more out of control. He describes his daily diet as consisting of a high-calorie breakfast such as roasts, pies, chips and cheese, and he is a big fan of high-sugar energy drinks, which he is able to consume in large quantities at once.
In 2020, Horton needed first aid due to organ failure, and rescuers used a crane to transfer him to an ambulance. The hospital's X-ray machine could not accommodate his size, and doctors even considered transferring him to a zoo where he would be examined using equipment designed for animals there. Doctors had sternly warned him that if he did not lose at least 70% of his body weight, his life would be at great risk.
Horton, who has been the "fattest man in the UK" since 2015, has expressed regret about his condition. In October last year, Houghton expressed hope that his era as "Britain's fattest man" would be over.
A study published in the British journal The Lancet, which states that as of 2022, the number of obese people in the world has exceeded 1 billion, accounting for about 12.5% of the total global population. According to WHO, obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease that significantly increases the risk of multiple health problems.
According to WHO statistics, about five million people died globally in 2019, and these deaths are related to noncommunicable diseases associated with high BMI, including but not limited to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, various types of cancer, neurological diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and digestive diseases.
Obesity has always been in the spotlight because it not only slows down metabolism, but also increases the risk of disease and causes damage to health. Unreasonable eating habits are a direct factor leading to obesity, and many people prefer high-calorie foods, which will not only lead to weight gain, but also be detrimental to health, control the diet, pursue nutritional balance, and increase the intake of fruits and vegetables.
The intake of high-sugar beverages is one of the ways to gain weight quickly. Taking milk tea as an example, a cup of milk tea has about 750 calories, while a workout usually only consumes about 220-250 calories, which means that it takes three consecutive days of exercise to burn off a cup of milk tea.
Sleep is essential for health. Lack of sleep can reduce the body's detoxification efficiency, which can lead to fat accumulation, and getting enough sleep is essential for good health. The habit of eating late-night snacks, especially after staying up late at work, is increasing. Weak digestion at night, going to bed immediately after a meal will not only affect the energy of the next day, but also easily lead to weight gain.
If you eat more calories than your body needs every day, combined with a lack of exercise, excess calories will accumulate in your body, and the trend of weight gain will be more pronounced as you age and your metabolism slows down. Most people with obesity have fatty liver disease, which is due to the imbalance in transport caused by obesity, and about 10% of patients with fatty liver disease may progress to steatohepatitis, which in severe cases may lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
In order to lose weight effectively, it is essential to change your eating habits, and you need to avoid overeating and uncontrolled snacking. Getting enough sleep and regular physical activity are also effective means of weight control, and it is recommended to exercise at least three times a week for at least 30 minutes each time. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are key to maintaining weight, and you can only achieve your weight loss goals if you do it consistently.
