On the love-hate relationship between Tsuyoshi Aoyama and the Conan animation production team

- What is the main difference between Conan comics and animation?

As we all know, the original "Detective Conan" is a manga written by Japanese manga artist Tsuyoshi Aoyama, which has been serialized for the 27th year this year (2020), and the TV anime of the same name adapted from this manga will also celebrate its 25th anniversary next year.

So, also called Detective Conan, what is the difference and connection between the manga and the anime of this work? Let's let Ke Xiaoyan thoroughly analyze it for all Ke fans

first, animation original

The biggest difference between the TV animation of "Detective Conan" and the original manga is the addition of the original episodes of the animation group, commonly known as "animation original" (original), which is the opposite of the concept of "manga adaptation" (manga adaptation).

By inviting scriptors to create reasoning stories based on the Conan worldview, the animation team was able to create one reasoning unit drama parallel to the original.

Due to the limited number of original manga works, and most of the 3-episode manga changes to 2 episodes of animation - 3 episodes of manga take three weeks to serialize, 2 episodes of animation only need to be broadcast for two weeks - the "three changes to two" or approximation mode, before the original work update is "exhausted", the animation team needs to find a way to ensure the frequency of updates. In addition to digital reruns (replaying old episodes in a digitally restored way), animation originality is the best way to fill in.

▲ TV184 (split version 198-199) "Curse Masquerade in a Sneering Smile", a classic in the original anime

Since "Conan" itself is a combination of "(broad) main line" and "reasoning unit drama", and the animation team chose the original "reasoning unit drama" part to avoid interference with the original "main line" (and punching in the face), coupled with the fact that the original author Aoyama Sensei has almost no participation or interference in the general original series, the original animation is usually only used as an object of appreciation (or spitting), rather than the basis for analyzing the plot direction of the original work.

Of course, characters who are often considered closely related to the "main line" occasionally appear in anime original episodes.

However, such episodes are usually more special, such as TV813 "The Dark Shadow Approaching Amuro" and TV898 "The Cake Melts!" "" are all TV animations linked to the theatrical version, corresponding to the theatrical version 20 "Pure Black Nightmare" and the theater version 22 "Zero's Executor", so it is not surprising that there is an appearance of Amuro in the linkage TV.

At this time, some people will ask: How many comics and how many originals are there now?

By querying, we can find the following data:

On the love-hate relationship between Tsuyoshi Aoyama and the Conan Animation Production Team - the main difference between manga and animation is that the original animation is two, the run-in of manga adaptation is three, and the manga adaptation is seeking common ground while reserving differences

After a simple calculation, we can conclude that as of August 15, 2020, the updated TV978 (split version of 1035 episodes), "Conan" has a total of 558 episodes of comic adaptation, 420 episodes of original (calculated in the original version), accounting for 57.06% and 42.94% respectively.

In the past two years, the number of comic changes has been drastically reduced due to the sharp reduction in the number of original comic updates, and the original series is also a good pastime... Probably (laughs).

two, the run-in of comic adaptation

After talking about the original, let's talk about comic adaptation.

Manga adaptation, as the name suggests, is a TV anime series adapted from the original manga, and the biggest difference from the original is that the expression of the manga is converted into animation. However, in addition to the form of expression, the content of the anime and the original manga will also be different.

Speaking of the difference between the comic adaptation of "Conan" and the original work, there may be students who want to answer - "I will answer this question!" The people in the anime who look a lot like gin and vodka have been arrested! Akimi Miyano robbed the bank twice! It also caused the appearance of Gray Plains in the original work to be postponed! ”

On the love-hate relationship between Tsuyoshi Aoyama and the Conan Animation Production Team - the main difference between manga and animation is that the original animation is two, the run-in of manga adaptation is three, and the manga adaptation is seeking common ground while reserving differences

In the anime tv series Episode "One" Becomes Smaller Detective (commonly known as "True Episode 1"), the scene in which Akimi Miyano is killed is changed back to the dock on the same night as in the manga

Indeed, these are all major adaptation accidents that everyone is familiar with, and they basically appear in the early manga adaptations and animations, and they are all a bit old black history.

However, why do you have these biggest adaptation problems that all fans can think of... Mainly in the early days?

There may be some students who want to rush to answer - "I will also answer this question, and the Internet says that the positioning of Conan animation at the beginning is a sub-supply work, and there can be no underworld!" ”

...... Well, it's worth discussing, please take out the melon seeds and the small bench, and listen to Ke Xiaoyan tell the story (laughs).

First of all, the earliest Detective Conan anime was indeed an anime work for the sake of the eccentrics — in contrast to the original manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday, positioned as a "Shonen Manga".

This difference in positioning is clearly reflected in the adaptation, and is not limited to the above major changes, many details have also been knifed by the animation team, such as:

1. Make the scenes that are too bloody and scary to a certain degree of harmony (although the places where the blood appeared in the early animation were all bright red, but later all of them were changed to dark colors. )

▲ TV1 "Roller Coaster Killing Incident", the classic scene of "head off" is harmonized into a holy light

2. Add the appearance of three children of the Junior Detective Corps

Bumi, Mitsuhiko, and Motota, who appeared in the original manga even later than Masami Hirota (Akimi Miyano), appeared directly in TV1 in the anime, and continued to "add drama" to TV8 - there were 7 manga episodes in the first 8 episodes, of which only the original work corresponding to TV4 originally had these three children in these 7 episodes, and the appearances of the three children in the other 6 episodes of "Manga" were masterpieces adapted by the animation team.

▲ TV5 "Shinkansen Explosion Incident". Conan: "Are you teaching me to do things?" ”

That being said, the animation team deliberately downplayed the existence of the Black Organization, changed important main line content, and may have other considerations, such as - this animation was not intended to be broadcast for a long time from the beginning.

The theater edition 2 "The Fourteenth Goal" publishes an interview between Aoyama Sensei and kotama Kenji, then the director of THEA TV supervisor and theater version 2 "The 14th Goal":

——Conan theatrical version is about to release the second part this year, what do the two think?

Aoyama: Well, when I first started drawing the original manga, I didn't think I'd be able to draw it for so long, and seriously, when I was animating, I thought it might not work out.

Kodama: I feel the same way. I think it will definitely become a vulgar animation, and it would be nice to be able to broadcast it for half a year (laughs). After all, the first episode got people's heads off.

From previous Aoyama interviews, it can be seen that Aoyama-sensei originally expected the manga to be serialized for three months, and director Kodama estimated that the anime would be broadcast twice as long as the manga, which is not bad (laughs).

In short, under the expectation that all parties believe that the manga will soon be serialized and the animation broadcast will not be successful, the animation adaptation of the original work will also be released - since it is scheduled not to be broadcast for too long, it is just a matter of changing it and making it to a certain extent. Who would have thought at the time that this manga would be serialized for more than 20 years and the anime would be broadcast for more than 20 years (laughs).

With the lengthening of the comic series and the improvement of the animation ratings, the animation team saw the necessity and feasibility of continuing to do the "Conan" animation, and also understood that it was too time-consuming and laborious for the animation team to create a set of main story by itself, so it braked sharply and turned sharply, returned to the plot track of the original work on the verge of overturning, began to maintain and ensure the fluency and authority of the original "(generalized) main line", and found the current "seeking common ground while reserving differences" adaptation mode in more than twenty years of exploration and running-in.

By the way, although we often complain about the magic change here and there, in many anime adaptations from manga, Conan's loyalty to the original can be said to be not low. At the very least, the animation team will not directly create a mysterious organization and add original characters such as "Spider" and "Snake" as they did in the adaptation of "Magic Quick Fight"—the animation team of "Conan" will have to be spat at by the audience even if they change a line from the original work, not to mention such a big change as the members of the black-clad organization (laughs).

third, seeking common ground while reserving differences

Then again, since the animation team changed from the magic change mode to the small change mode after the run-in, can the animation adapted from the original manga be fully believed? If you have such a thought, then be careful of falling into the pit!

After jumping out of the early "release" magic modification mode, the animation team's adaptation of the original work mainly has the following three forms:

1. Make changes to details and lines

An episode usually has 24 minutes, in addition to the opening song, the ending song and the ending trailer, the voice actor Easter egg, etc., there are also about 20 minutes of content. How to scientifically arrange the information of each episode has become the focus of the animation adaptation. Many times, in order to fill the length of an episode, the supervisor will add some shots or lines.

Supervisor Yasuichiro Yamamoto once said of a famous rollover in ash Hara's formula book: "In episode 684 of "Bubble Heat and Cigarettes", Okiya says superfluous words, which makes Aoyama-sensei unhappy (laughs). The dialogue of 'What an unreliable knight' and 'Even if I use my life in exchange, I will protect you, my princess', was added by me for the reason of the length of the production. ”

▲ TV 684 (split version 736 episodes) "Bubble Heat and Cigarettes (Part 1)"

If the lines are still relatively obvious, the chaotic shots are not so easy to find. For example, the last episode of the Crimson episode.

In the original work, Aoyama-sensei carefully drew Akai's action of putting on his left glove, and he also wore gloves the whole time when holding and using Nanda Rikumichi's pistol, and did not touch the pistol with his right hand; however, in the process of adaptation, the animation team added a shot to check the gun situation, using a right hand that was not wearing gloves, and Akai should find someone to reason with (laughs).

▲ TV783 (split version 836 episodes) "The Truth of Crimson"

Speaking of crimson, one detail change that has to be mentioned is Akai's one-handed shotgun. This legacy from TV345 (split version 375 episodes) "The Double Mystery Case of Confronting the Black Organization on the Night of the Full Moon" finally dumped the face of the animation team ten years later.

Aoyama: I said one-handed, one-handed, let you mess around, hum ~ ('へ ́)~

Bottom: TV781 (split version 834 episodes) "Crimson Interlacing" memories of TV345 scenes

Of course, this increase in detail or the fine-tuning of the lines is mostly negative, and sometimes it will have the effect of optimizing and perfecting the plot.

For example, in the TV971-974 (split version 1028-1031) "Target is the Metropolitan Police Department of Transportation" series, there are many original details and lines of the animation team, making the plot smoother, the logic more smooth, the character image more full, and the atmosphere rendering more full.

In short, for such detailed changes, whether added, deleted or changed, the final interpretation right should belong to the original work. In case one of the details is changed incorrectly...

2. Add original paragraphs

If adding two lines and two more shots still doesn't meet the need for a full length, it's time to add original paragraphs.

The most typical example is TV400 (split version 434 episodes) "Doubtful Xiaolan", the animation team original a whole section of Xinyi and Xiaolan's warm daily plot + a small case, expanding Xiaolan's attempt to unlock the conan mobile phone password plot.

For example, "Fugitive Maori Kogoro" (adapted from Vol.57 File.8 (Total File.594) Fugitive, which was originally broadcast on the mobile TV NOTTV on April 23, 2014, as a special anime for the M18 "Sniper in a Different Dimension", was only 14 minutes long.

At the beginning of 2015, in order to be able to broadcast it on TV as a special new year episode, "Happy New Year Maori Kogoro" added the second half of the plot and made the overall length similar to that of a normal episode of the anime. This addition not only fits the theme of the New Year, but also warms up for the TV765-766 (split episode 818-819) "The Kite Flying Incident in the Takizu River" broadcast on January 24 and 31 of that year.

▲A special episode that is not counted in the number of TV episodes, "Greetings to the New Year, Maori Kogoro"

For example, at the end of the penultimate episode of the "Collision of Red and Black" series, Nearly 3 minutes of Xiaolan's memories are inserted. Xiaolan's appearance in this episode is completely original by the animation team, which is led by her memories of her encounters in New York and on the streets of snowy nights with Akai. However, this large section of memories is somewhat suspicious (laughs), in order to arrange the process of Akai's fake death in the last episode of the "Red and Black" series or something.

▲ TV503 (split version 550 episodes) "The collision of red and black, the final death"

The addition of such plot passages is the same as the previous point - as a whole plot, it should be subject to the approval of the original work or the original author.

3. Adjust the order

The third change is to adjust the order of the episodes when adapting.

Because the "main line" in the early original works is not obvious, more of a reasoning unit drama, the adjustment of the order has little impact on the smoothness of the plot, such order adjustment is extremely common in the early days, and it can even be said that the adaptation without adjusting the order is quite rare.

With the dilution and diffusion of the "main line" information, more and more original comics in the later period appeared to be unable to adjust the plot details of the adaptation order, and the adaptation of the animation team became closer and closer to the order of the original work.

Of course, there are conventions and exceptions, and even in recent years, there have been some adaptations that have adjusted the order, and one of the classic cases is TV853-854 (split version 908-909 episodes) "Memories of Sakura Class".

As we all know, the anime team has a principle that is in line with the original manga, that is, when a certain episode is broadcast, the "time" in this episode should be synchronized with the "real real time" (according to this principle, the dates specified in manga such as Matsuda's death day are also changed due to the different dates of the manga serial and the date of the anime broadcast).

However, by the time Memories of sakura class was supposed to be adapted in order, the cherry blossom season in the real world had already passed. So, the animation team decided – wait! Skip this series and adapt the next one first!

In March 2017, "Memories of Sakura Class", which had been postponed for ten months, finally aired during the cherry blossom season as desired.

▲ TV854 (split version 909 episodes) "Memories of Sakura Class (New One BOY)"

Also in order to keep up with real time, TV885-886 (split version 940-941) "Solving the Mystery at Poirot Coffee Shop" was greatly advanced in the adaptation schedule.

But this time the adjustment is not so perfect. Since this series was moved directly to the first appearance of the two rum suspects Wakasa Ryumi and Wakita Kane, the series in the original series is already after Wakasa Ryumi's second appearance - the details of the first appearance of Wakasa Kaneori mentioned in the original work were deleted in the anime.

Vol.93 File.1 (total File.982) meets at The Poirot Café

Speaking of which, it is necessary to mention that there is also a legacy of early adaptations that changed the order and double-whizzed off the faces of the animation team.

Because "The Moon, The Secret of the Stars and the Sun" was postponed for a year before being adapted into an animation, directly from the appearance of Gray Plains to the appearance of Gray Plains, the animation team of that year made a very brave patch: it is not that Gray Plains has not yet appeared, it is that Gray Plains do not want to come.

However, 20 years later, in 2019, the case of that year was mentioned again in the "Looking for Mary", and the words were completely changed according to the original comic book - "That was before you transferred to gray plains".

In the original manga, the plot was originally coherent and bug-free, but the animation team punched themselves in the face (laughs) because of the chaotic order.

Fourth, how to tap the difference between comic adaptation and the original

Even after talking about the differences between the comic and the original, it is difficult to exhaust the classic cases of comic adaptation in a tweet, let alone countless detailed changes.

So as a Ke fan, how to tap the difference between the comic and the original in daily life?

If you want to confirm the difference between the original work and the comic adaptation, the simplest and most reliable way is of course to see it in person.
