This project is to insert a new performing arts building on an existing university campus. Our scope of work includes interior lighting, façade and venue lighting in the front hall. The overall exterior lighting strategy works on two levels to define the overall form of the building and reveal a soft, folded silhouette. For interiors, lighting reinforces the strong architectural form by illuminating surfaces or a grid arranged in the building's modular units. Ancillary spaces such as rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, and facilities are located underground and use only electric light sources.

During the day, as the sun shines on, all the intricate details of the façade are revealed as you approach the single massive form of the building. The façade is deliberately designed to be opaque, while a transparent datum is the main hall and circulation space. As the sun sets, the light from the interior illumination begins to take over, extending horizontally upwards and downwards from the hall, away from the hall and along the façade in both directions. During the day, the lobby level is deliberately designed as a mirror, giving the building a strong urban presence on all four sides, and at night, it becomes a transparent datum that runs through the building.

A close-up view of the façade shows that the fleeting light is aligned with the grooved façade, which highlights the form and finer details of the façade composition. The downlight located below the hall emphasizes the feeling of floating on the public exterior, and it has adjustable track lighting for flexible uses such as temporary events and performances. The campus presence of the new Performing Arts Center plays out at the site and street level, guaranteeing safe movement while giving a unique identity to the night on an urban scale.

The main space of the building is a large, flexible auditorium, with lighting levels that allow the lighting of the seating system to be controlled independently, thus reducing the amount of light directly hitting the main space. The lighting above acts as working light, but is organized in a grid to incorporate practical functions and filter the light through the dramatic layers below, creating a strong sense of graphics and rhythm.

In the rehearsal room, the lighting design approach continues to support strong geometries and grids to orient and layer the theater's lighting.
