On April 29, the Ministry of Transport released the basic operation of the online car-hailing industry in March 2024, as of March 31, 2024, a total of 345 online car-hailing platform companies across the country have obtained online car-hailing platform business licenses, and a total of 6.791 million online car-hailing driver licenses and 2.847 million vehicle transportation licenses have been issued in various places, an increase of 76,000 and 28,000 respectively compared with the previous month.

Affected by the Spring Festival, the total orders fell sharply in February, and in March, as the migrant workers returned to work, the demand for taxis returned to normal, and the total number of online car-hailing orders in March returned to the level of the previous year, receiving a total of 891 million, an increase of 15% month-on-month. Among them, the aggregation platform completed 241 million orders, an increase of 29% month-on-month.

The most obvious change is that the growth trend of the top 10 online car-hailing platforms with monthly orders has changed from a "green" in February to a "red" in March, except for Wanshun Taxi, the remaining 9 platform orders are all growing, of which Xiangdao Travel, Cao Cao Travel, and Ruqi Travel have increased by more than 50% to 62.2%, 54.4%, and 52.7% respectively. Sunshine travel, timely travel, and T3 travel orders all increased by more than 40%.

Although the total orders of online car-hailing have increased significantly, judging from the March data released by various places, the income of online car-hailing drivers has generally declined, and Shenzhen, Qingdao, Tianjin, Zhuhai and other places have issued reminders that the online car-hailing market has been saturated, and the income is less than expected. Among them, Zhuhai clearly pointed out that the hourly wage of online car-hailing is close to the minimum wage standard.

Why did orders rise in March, but drivers didn't make as much money as they did when they fell in February? The core reason is that there are too many drivers. Although the total orders in February were 116 million less than those in March, nearly 6 percent of drivers in many cities did not get out of the car during the Chinese New Year.

In March, all walks of life returned to normal, and the demand for taxis also returned to the pre-holiday level, and the total order volume was almost the same as the previous year, but in the first quarter of 2024 alone, there were 219,000 new drivers with licenses, an increase of 80,000 compared with the same period last year.

On the one hand, the online car-hailing industry is showing a trend of "certificates" and "orders" rising, on the other hand, the voice of online car-hailing saturation is endless, and the supervision and controversy against online car-hailing platforms continues.

At present, the number of online car-hailing platforms in the country has reached 345, and for users, almost most of them are online car-hailing platforms that they have never heard of and will not actively choose, but the aggregation of taxi-hailing models that have emerged in recent years has given these small platforms the opportunity to survive in the cracks.

Data map

Although the smaller online car-hailing platforms can attract passengers from the aggregation platform through low prices, there are deficiencies in the safety and experience of passengers, as well as the income security of drivers.

In March, there were 67 platforms that did not transmit data for more than 180 days, how many of them were on the verge of elimination, and how many of them existed in name only? According to the industry information that has been released, a large number of platforms are shrinking their business and may leave the market at any time.

Tianjin: Of the 78 platforms that have obtained online car-hailing business licenses, 41 are actually in operation, nearly half of which are not in operation.

Suzhou: Of the 69 platforms that have obtained online car-hailing business licenses, 43 are actually in operation and 26 are not in operation.

Chongqing: Of the 88 platforms that have obtained online ride-hailing business licenses, 57 are actually in operation and 31 are not in operation.

Recently, the Suzhou Municipal and Qingdao Municipal Transportation Bureaus issued separate announcements to revoke the operating licenses of 10 online ride-hailing platforms.

Supervision has tightened and industry reshuffle has accelerated. Gradually, the market will find a new balance between price and service. Now there is no shortage of orders in the industry, only by improving service quality and experience can drivers get orders, if only rely on low prices and rely on aggregation platforms to attract traffic, such an online car-hailing platform will not go far.

For online car-hailing drivers, it is more important to keep their eyes open when choosing a platform and give preference to the big platform, after all, once the small platform has a problem, the money may not be returned!
