"Good Book Recommendation"
Journal of the Amsterdam Mission to China
Henry Ellis
In 1816, Lord Amsterdam was appointed as an envoy to the Qing Dynasty to discuss Sino-British trade and diplomatic matters with the Manchu court, in an attempt to further open the door to China. The author of this book, Henry Ellis, was second only to Lord Amsterdam and Sir Staunton in rank as Clerk of Mission and Deputy Envoy of Mission. In this private journal, Ellis records what the mission saw and heard along the way.
Due to disagreements over the etiquette of the meeting with the Jiaqing Emperor, the Qing government eventually canceled the visit, but allowed the delegation to travel south along the Grand Canal to Guangzhou, where they were treated with courtesy. The mission boarded the ship in Macao on January 28, 1817 and returned. On his way home, he visited Napoleon Bonaparte, the former French emperor who was confined to St. Nazareth.

"Good Book Recommendation"
The Story of the Old Summer Palace
Kan Hongliu / Editor-in-Chief
The Old Summer Palace, the "Garden of Ten Thousand Gardens", is a window to gain an in-depth understanding of the history of the Qing Dynasty, court life, and royal gardens. Based on historical materials, this book selects materials related to the Old Summer Palace from the documents and archives of the Qing Dynasty to write historical stories, and is divided into three units: "The Emperor and Empress in the Imperial Garden", "Range Rover Reminiscences of Old News" and "How Many People and Things", with a total of more than 30 articles. Bringing together many scholars of Qing history, we will talk about the story of the Old Summer Palace, which is closer to history, and systematically introduce the garden life of different groups of people in the Old Summer Palace, such as emperors and concubines, courtiers, Western missionaries, palace guards, etc., as well as the content of festivals and customs, court and government celebrations, garden landscapes, etc., leading readers to pursue the lost "Garden of Ten Thousand Gardens" together.
