How much do you know about intellectual property?

✦ Origin of World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization on April 26, 2001, and it was decided to designate April 26 as "World Intellectual Property Day" every year from 2001 onwards, with the aim of establishing a worldwide awareness of respecting knowledge, advocating science and protecting intellectual property rights, and creating a legal environment that encourages intellectual innovation and intellectual property protection.

✦ What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual property rights are "a general term for rights arising in accordance with the law based on creative achievements and industrial and commercial marks". Intellectual property rights are the exclusive rights enjoyed by the right holder in accordance with the law in respect of the following subject matter: (1) works, (2) inventions, utility models and designs, (3) trademarks, (4) geographical indications, (5) trade secrets, (6) layout designs of integrated circuits, (7) new varieties of plants, and (8) other subject matter prescribed by law. The most common are copyrights, patents, and trademarks. After the right holder obtains the intellectual property rights, except with the consent of the right holder or otherwise provided by law, no one else shall own or use the right, otherwise it will constitute infringement and will be punished by law.

✦ Why protect intellectual property

At present, the mainland is changing from a big country in the introduction of intellectual property rights to a big country in the creation of intellectual property rights, and the work of intellectual property rights is changing from the pursuit of quantity to the improvement of quality. We must proceed from the national strategic perspective and the requirements of entering a new stage of development, comprehensively strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights, promote the construction of a modern economic system, stimulate the innovation vitality of the whole society, and promote the construction of a new development pattern.

For the country, innovation is the first driving force to lead development, and the protection of intellectual property rights is the protection of innovation. To comprehensively promote Chinese-style modernization, we must better carry out the protection of intellectual property rights.

For enterprises: strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights can enable enterprises to exclusively enjoy the market benefits brought by intellectual property rights, avoid the risk of infringement, and ensure the safe operation of enterprises.

For individuals, the protection of intellectual property rights can mobilize the people's creative enthusiasm and initiative and promote the optimal allocation of social resources.
