What is National Defense?
National defense is the sum total of all political, economic, scientific, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and other measures taken to meet the needs of national security and development, to defend the sovereignty and integrity of the country's territory, territorial waters, and airspace, and to guard against enemy aggression. In a word: the defense of the country, the defense of the people. Therefore, national defense work is not the business of any one person, nor is it the business of the state president or the chairman of the Central Military Commission, or the affairs of the armed forces, but includes the military, political, economic, scientific, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and other aspects, as well as the defense of the entire people. The army wins the war, and the people are the backers. To this end, for the sake of the security of the motherland, the state has formulated more than 20 laws and regulations, including the "National Defense Law of the People's Republic of China," to improve the country's national defense and encourage the broad masses of the people to actively participate in safeguarding national security.
What is the nature of the mainland's defense?
The nature of the mainland's national defense mainly includes three aspects: First, the mainland is a socialist country, all state power belongs to the people, and defending the motherland is the sacred duty of all Chinese people, that is, our national defense is the national defense of the people of the whole country. Second, we adhere to an independent foreign policy, pursue the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, and the mainland's national defense is not affected by foreign forces and is not allied with any country or group of countries, that is, our national defense is an independent national defense. What is National Defense Education?
Paragraph 4 of Chapter 1 of the "Law of the People's Republic of China on National Defense Education" stipulates that the State shall enable citizens to enhance their sense of national defense, master basic national defense knowledge, learn necessary military skills, arouse patriotic enthusiasm, and consciously fulfill their national defense obligations through national defense education. It also stipulates national defense education in schools, society, party and government organs, and social organizations. What are the functions of the mainland's national defense?

What is the origin of National Defense Education Day?
On 31 August 2001, the 23rd Session of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress designated the third Saturday of September as the National Defense Education Day for the whole people. This is the first festival in China to explicitly stipulate the theme of national defense education in the form of law.
The reason why the state has set up the National Defense Education Day for the whole people is, first, in view of the weakening of people's concept of national defense in peacetime and the need to strengthen national defense education; second, it is necessary to provide a popular and socialized carrier for the whole people to participate in national defense education activities. Establishing an opportunity in accordance with the law for all citizens to receive national defense education together every year can better reflect the characteristics of national defense education on the mainland as a whole people and as a whole society.
